Maya Lopez is a character featured in stories published by Marvel Comics, created by writer/artist David Mack and artist/editor Joe Quesada. She is a Cheyenne woman who was born deaf but was blessed with a Photographic Memory and the ability to perfectly mimic any human muscle movement she can see. This caused her deafness diagnosis to come almost too late, as her unresponsiveness was initially considered a learning disability or mental illness, but allowed her to make much money in several sports and performance arts once the truth was realized.
She was created as a foil for the blind super hero Daredevil, first appearing in Daredevil volume 2 #9(1999). She was sent by her adoptive father/Honorary Uncle, Wilson Fisk, to investigate the "good but misguided" lawyer Matt Murdock, who was disrupting the many criminal enterprises of Fisk that Lopez was unaware of. She was then manipulated into attempting to kill the pesky crime fighter Daredevil, when the lawyer and super hero combination had Wilson backed into a corner. She was dubbed "Echo" by the general populace of Hell's Kitchen when they saw her performing an In-Universe shadow puppet play by that name about a devil slayer. Her assaults of Daredevil on the streets were assumed to publicity stunts to promote future shows. Matt Murdock and Maya Lopez fell madly in love with one another, but an equally mad hatred drove Echo to obsessively hunt his alter ego, making it hard for him to take their relationship to the next level. After nearly slaying Daredevil on multiple occasions, Maya would come to realize he could not be the man Wilson Fisk described him as, as well as the depths of Wilson's criminality, but her romance with Matt would not survive her Freak Out. Within the pages of the Daredevil comics, Lopez and Murdock would move on, reunite, and happily support each other as Just Friends, but other creative teams with very different ideas about how Lopez should be depicted became increasingly interested in the character.
The character's profile was raised thanks to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where a Choctaw version of Maya Lopez was one of the main antagonists on Disney+ show Hawkeye. This lead to the original Lopez getting her own solo comic book mini series. The MCU Maya Lopez then starred in her own show, Echo, resulting in another unrelated but definitely inspired comic book.
Marvel's Maya Lopez has nothing to do with Terry Moore's 2008 comic book Echo, the main character of 2009 television show Dollhouse, the 2010 Alex Benedict novel Echo, the Magical Land comic book Ekho, the 2015 visual novel Echo, the 2017 video game Echo or the 2019 horror novel Echo.
