    Cleaners

Home Series: The Division

Playable Characters: De Rosa, Green, Kersey

Characters in XDefiant
The Cleaners Faction logo

These Division agent antagonists and ex-NYC sanitation workers solve all of their problems with one tool: fire. Cleaners specialize in area denialIn-game description

The Cleaners are former New York City sanitation workers-garbageman, public facility janitors, park custodians, street cleaners, water treatment plant operators, etc. - whose jobs in better times were devoted to keeping neighborhoods and infrastructure clean. Many commuted to work from outside the city but got trapped in the urban quarantine zones during the early days of the Dollar Flu Virus outbreak. Others were inner-city dwellers who lost loved ones during the outbreak.Responding to what they perceived as the shameful failure of local and federal authorities to protect their health and families, a number of these blue-collar city workers banded together to take matters into their own hands, organized and armed by Manhattan's sanitation supervisor, Joe Ferro. The Cleaners aimed to eradicate the mutant smallpox virus, with their chosen method of killing being flamethrowers fueled by napalm. The Cleaners incinerated anything and anyone suspected of carrying the disease, often including perfectly healthy survivors exposed to the virus.

The Cleaners speciality is in area denial with their abilities being suited for their job, with their active abilities being Incinerator Drone, which sends forth a drone that leaves behind a lingering trail of napalm that inflicts damage to all who cross it, along with the drone exploding once it reaches its maximum range or upon hitting an obstacle, while Firebomb has them slam a Molotov Cocktail onto the ground, igniting the floor and dealing massive damage to those caught in its radius. Their passive ability, Incendiary Rounds makes their weapons deal adicional burn damage, albeit at the cost of reduced range. Finally, their Ultra, The Purifier, lets them deploy a flamethrower to burn their enemies to a crisp.

Tropes that apply to the Cleaners:

  • Buffy Speak: Sometimes their announcer will refer to Echelon's ultra as their "see through walls thing".
  • Brooklyn Rage: All members and the announcer have with a distinctive Noo Yawk Funetik Aksent accent and constantly speak like someone has cut them off in traffic. Their announcer, unlike the others will always get angry at losses, rather than acknowleging the team's effort. Fitting, since the Cleaners were exclusive to the New York-set The Division.
  • Close-Range Combatant: Downplayed. As a drawback their Incendiary Rounds passive reduces the range of their firearms in roughly 10%.
  • "Instant Death" Radius: Firebomb will, more often than not, kill any enemy within its area of effect when deployed. Even walking into the burnt patch will deal massive damage.
  • Kill It with Fire: Their specialty, with the Cleaners being able to cause burn damage with every single one of their attacks, with the exception of throwables.
  • Laughing Mad: Scoring at least three kills with the The Purifier will cause the character to break out in crazed laughter.
  • Malevolent Masked Men: They dress in full body fireproof equipment, air tanks and gas masks, completely obscuring their faces and are fully willing to burn everyone and everything to eradicate the Dollar Flu Virus.
  • Molotov Cocktail: Used in their Firebomb ability albeit it's smashed into the ground, rather than thrown.
  • Rhymes on a Dime: Their announcer, on ocasion:
    • Winning a match
Announcer: A win for your crew is a win for me too, not get too poetical.
    • Starting a Team Death Match:
Announcer: The fun never stops when the shooting storts!
  • Shockwave Stomp: How their Firebomb is actually used. It leaves behind a patch of burning floor for a few seconds, dealing significant damage, more than the trail left by their Incinerator Drone, to all in range or who try to traverse it.
  • Sore Loser: Their announcer will always berate the team if they lose, regardless of how close the match was.
  • Video Game Flamethrowers Suck: Averted with a passion. The Purifier has a deceptively long range and between the direct damage and the burn effect it applies it might as well be a One-Hit Kill.
  • Villain Protagonist: A Well-Intentioned Extremist variant in their home title.

    Phantoms

Home Series: Ghost Recon

Characters: Singa, Gorgon, Rhino

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/phantoms_logo.jpg
The Phantoms Faction logo

Also known as Shadow Team, this elite squad of ex-Ghosts wields tomorrow's battlefield tech to defend, disrupt, and destroy.In-game description

The Phantoms are a group which are secretly striking against Ghost Recon before disappearing 20 years into the future. Born in darkness, the Phantoms challenge US imperialism and answer to no one. A deadly group of ex-Ghosts, they are equally armed and seek to dismantle world order. Their first operation against the Ghosts was to steal ATHENA Corp. information from Xinyi, Taiwan.

The Phantoms focus on zone control with their abilities being designed to protect themselves and their allies; Their Mag Barrier active ability places a barrier that blocks all incoming enemy fire while allowing the Phantoms and their allies to shoot through untils enemies destroy it or runs out of power. Blitz Shield will have the Phantom instead deploy a tactical shield, blocking all damage to the front but restricting them to melee attacks. Their passive Hardened grants them adictional health to stay in the fight for longer. Their Ultra AEGIS grants them a spherical barrier and a highpower electro-scattergun letting them take absolute control of the battlefield.

Tropes that apply to the Phantoms:

  • Armor Is Useless: It is, but not from the reasons you'd expect. See the Body Armor as Hit Points and Genetic Engineering Is the New Nuke entries.
  • Barrier Warrior: A specialty of the Phantoms; their Mag Barrier deploys a shield that blocks all incoming fire for a period of time or until takes too much damage and their Ultra, AEGIS gives them a spherical barrier covering and absorving gunfire in all directions.
  • Body Armor as Hit Points: Averted. Despite being the only ones at launch that use body armor, the description of their passive (which grants them an additional 20 HP) states that it comes from genetic therapies to put them in peak fighting condicion.
  • Deadpan Snarker: If the players' team is behind, he snarks that "they won't cracks cold ones after this."
  • Foil: To Echelon, the other military themed faction at launch:
    • Both factions are dressed in military gear but the Phantoms are clad in full body armor and have white and blue highlights while Echelon uses leaner spysuits with green highlights.
    • Both have abilities that provide team wide utility but the Phantoms Mag Barrier favors a more defensive approach by providing protection to its teammates, while Echelon's Intel Suit leans towards a more offensive approach by marking targets.
    • Both have abilities that trade team wide utility to greater utility to the user, with the Phantoms Blitz Shield protecting them from the front but limiting them to melee, making it good for offensive pushes, while the Echelon's Digital Ghillie Suit turns them invisible, letting perform ambushes with ease.
    • Both their passives give them benefit that reinforces their playstyle, with the Phantoms Hardened granting them increase health, letting them hold out for longer, while Echelon's Low Profile prevents them from appearing in minimaps, letting them perform surprise movements on their enemies.
    • Both their Ultras provide them with a extremely powerful weapon and a benefit to their team, but the Phantoms AEGIS grants them a Short-Range Shotgun and a shield around them, meant to hold down zones while the Echelon's Sonar Goggle grants them an Hand Cannon and marks the position and direction of enemies, giving them great offensive capability for aggressive plays.
    • Finally, their announcers are complete opposites from each other; the Phantoms one is Mildly Military man while the Echelon's is a Consummate Professional woman.
  • Genetic Engineering Is the New Nuke: Downplayed. Their Hardened passive is described as the result of gene therapies.
  • High-Tech Hexagons: Subverted. While their barriers and the slits on the shield have geometrical patterns on them, they're triangles rather than hexagons.
  • Hold the Line: Their playstyle in a nutshell. Their passive allows them to withstand greater damage, Mag Barrier lets them anchor down hold a zone and their AEGIS Ultra, between the short range of their weapon and limit on their movement speed encourages them to stay in an area while protecting their team. Only Blitz Shield lets them work in a more aggressive manner and even then is more to Draw Aggro.
  • Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: Blitz Shield has them deploy a tactical shield that blocks all damage from the front, at the cost of limiting the user to melee enemies. The shield can break but has a shorter cooldown than Mag Barrier and can be ended earlier.
  • Mildly Military: Played with in regards to their announcer. He uses fairly informal language while performing the announcements but maintains a fairly stoic, unchanging tone while talking.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: They are the only team at launch to not have its characters refered by their names, going instead by callsigns.
  • Shows Damage: As it takes damage their Mag Barrier and the barrier created by their AEGIS Ultra starts to gain cracks which increase as they takes more damage, with the Ultra ending earlier if it breaks.
  • Skull for a Head: Their masks are all made to resemble a skull.

    Libertad

Home Series: Far Cry 6

Characters: Iselda, Seleste, Beto

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/libertad_logo.jpg
Libertad's Faction logo

These resourceful revolutionaries fight to free their Caribbean nation of Yara. They're supremo at improvised medical assistance.In-game description

Libertad are a rebel group in Yara dedicated to fight the Castillo regime. Led by Clara Garcia and later Dani Rojas, they are a guerrilla movement dedicated to bringing peace and free elections to Yara. To this end, Libertad's main goal is to end the fascist regime headed by Antón Castillo.

Libertad are expert medics, thanks to BioVida therapies they've adapted for battlefield use. Their Biovida Boost ability grants them and their alliesincreased regeneration when used letting them recover faster while their El Remedio throws down a canister containing special gas that heals friendlies within its range. Their passive Espíritu de Libertad passive lets them begin to recover health earlier, with friendlies in close proximity receiving the bonus as well. Their Ultra Médico Supremo places a backpack on the ground that doubles friendlies health and grants extremely quick healing to all in an area, making them highly durable in combat.

Tropes that apply to Libertad:

  • Anti-Frustration Features: Owing to their playstyle they have a series of features meant to aid them in fullfiling the role:
    • Friendly teammates that don't have full health have an icon above their heads, showed even through walls. The icon, a blue box with a cross will be empty if they are receiving healing and full if they are, letting the player stay aware of their teammates situation and triage them.
    • Libertad only need to get close to friendlies to share the Espíritu de Libertad passive and begin healing them, albeit as a counterpoint they need to remain close to maximize its effects. If they move out of range the healing stops.
    • Their BioVida Boost will show how many teammates are in range for the ability by displaying a number of figures over its HUD symbol to aid the player in maximizing its efficiency by applying to as many people as possible.
    • El Remedio shows its area of effect to all teammates via a circle around it, letting players knows where to place and space themselves out rather than using the gas cloud that it produces to guess where to put themselves (which doesn't reach its max range).
    • Their Médico Supremo Ultra, like El Remedio displays the area with a bright filled circle, indicating where to stand to receive its effects. To balance it enemies can also see it too, in bright orange.
  • Awesome Backpack: Which they use to deploy their Ultra. Doubles as a Call-Back to the Supremos from Far Cry 6.
  • * Foil: To the Highwaymen. Both hail from the Far Cry franchise and make significant use of makeshift devices in combat but while Libertad are La Résistance out to topple a dictatorial regime, with their abilities being designed to provide healing to their team, the Highwaymen come from the The Apunkalypse and believe in Screw the Rules, It's the Apocalypse! and rely on Rape, Pillage, and Burn to survive, to the point where their abilities are meant for direct combat and provide only a benefit to them.
  • Gratuitous Spanish: Their abilities all mix spanish and english in their titles.
  • La Résistance: They are this in their home title and several voicelines of theirs allude to this.
  • MacGyvering: El Remedio looks like it was cobbled together from pieces of junk and their Ultra isn't much different. Par for the course, considering the game where they come from.
  • The Medic: Their playstyle. They can fight as well as the others but their healing abilities lets them keep their team going for longer.
  • Mythology Gag: Juan will, on ocasion quote rules of guerrilla warfare mentioned in Far Cry 6 such as rule 48 (A guerrilla only takes what they can defend) usually at the beginning of a match.
  • Sore Loser: Downplayed. Even at close losses Juan still berates the team, altough he still displays some sympathy toward them.
  • Two Girls to a Team: They are the only ones at launch with this arrangement, unlike the other teams which follow Two Guys and a Girl.

    Echelon

Home Series: Splinter Cell

Characters: Malee, Samir, Rafa.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/echelon_logo_1.jpg
Echelon's Faction logo

The NSA's Echelon agents don't shy away from a firefight, but they'd rather keep enemies in the dark with subterfuge and info warfare.In-game description

Third Echelon was a top-secret directorate tasked with spearheading the American information warfare initiative. Its primary goal was to serve as the equivalent of Special Forces in the modern age of information warfare. Its most significant initiative was the Splinter Cell Program in which lone operatives, called "Splinter Cells", did field work in sensitive areas around the world. Their work was the darkest of black ops, retrieving the most vital intelligence and acting on it in ways that other operatives cannot. Unlike the CIA's field operatives, their identities were kept secret, even from other government agencies. Initiated with a single operative, Sam Fisher, the "Splinter Cell" program was expanded under the direction of the organization's final director, Tom Reed.

Echelon is focused on intelligence and reconnaissence that can give players crucial information. Their Intel Suit active sends pulses that highlights all enemies within range and marks them on the minimap for allies to exploit. Alternatively their Digital Ghillie Suit turns them invisible for a short period of time, letting get the drop on their opponents with ease and their Low Profile passive prevents from appearing in enemy minimaps, regardless of what they do. Lastly, their Sonar Goggles Ultra lets them see enemies through walls, marks their position and direction in real time on the minimap along with giving a powerful pistol capable of killing a target with a few shots.

Tropes that apply to Echelon:

  • Consummate Professional: Their announcer tends to be fairly levelhead normally but often times allows herself some personnal remarks about the player and the team.
  • Foil: To the Phantoms, the other military themed faction at launch:
    • Both factions are dressed military gear but Echelon uses leaner spysuits with green highlights while the Phantoms are clad in full body armor and have white and blue highlights.
    • Both have abilities that provide team wide utility but Echelon's Intel Suit leans towards a more offensive approach by marking targets, while the Phantoms Mag Barrier favors a more defensive approach by providing protection to its teammates .
    • Both have abilities that trade team wide utility to greater utility to the user, with Echelon's Digital Ghillie Suit turning them invisible, letting perform ambushes with ease, while the Phantoms Blitz Shield protects them from the front but limiting them to melee, making it good for offensive pushes.
    • Both their passives give them benefits that reinforces their playstyle, with Echelon's Low Profile preventing them from appearing in minimaps, letting them perform surprise movements on their enemies, while the Phantoms Hardened grants them increase health, letting them hold out in fights for longer.
    • Both their Ultras provide them with a extremely powerful weapon and team wide benefits, but Echelon's Sonar Goggle grants them an Hand Cannon and marks the position and direction of enemies, giving them great offensive capability for aggressive play while the Phantoms AEGIS grants them a Short-Range Shotgun and a shield around them, meant to hold down zones.
    • Finally, their announcers are complete opposites from each other; the Echelon's one is a Consummate Professional woman while the one for the Phantoms is a Mildly Military man.
  • Hand Cannon: Their Ultra gives them one while active, the 5.7 pistol. It can kill a target with two shots to the body or one to the head. Spending all rounds ends the Ultra earlier.
  • Invisibility Cloak: The Digital Ghillie Suit available to them. It is time limited and ends earlier if the player attacks or suffers damage but avoids Visible Invisibility by being extremly hard to spot while active.
  • Mythology Gag: The pistol they are given for their Ultra is a FN Five-seven with a suppressor and a laser sight, the signature weapon of Sam Fisher.
  • The Sneaky Guy: Thanks to their Low Profile passive they won't appear in enemy minimaps regardless of the circunstance. Their weapons always count as being suppressed for minimap purposes and while enemy Echelons can highlight (in bright red) them with their Intel Suit and see them with Sonar Goggles. Neither ability will however, mark their position on the minimap.
  • Spy Catsuit: As is the case in their home series.
  • X-Ray Vision:
    • Enemies in range of their Intel Suit pulses are marked for the player and allies and are visible through walls.
    • Using Sonar Goggles enables the player to see all enemies while active, regardless of range or physical obstacles .

    DedSec

Home Series: Watch_Dogs

Characters: Sebastian, Jing, Gia.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dedsec_logo.jpg
DedSec's Faction logo

Notorious hacktivists who rely on backdoor exploits and denial-of-service attacks to frustrate foes and corps alike.In-game description

DedSec is a notorious hacking collective that operates in cities all around the world. With millions of followers, their goal is to expose the corruption in the common world, including large corporations. The group itself is opposed to the implementation and use of the CtOS and has the objective of proving that the system is flawed and unnecessary. The group's members hack into various CTOS systems for destructive purposes in order to highlight its weaknesses and vulnerabilities.

DedSec specializes in disrupting their enemies and exploiting their vulnerabilities. Their Hijack lets them take over enemies abilities and use them for themselves and their team, while their their Spiderbot deploys the eponymous device which chases and stuns the closest enemy, setting them up for a easy kill. Their passive, Fabricator, produces a new throwable device after using previously using one, letting them maintain pressure on their enemies. Finally, their Ultra Lockout disables the enemies' HUD, minimap, and completely shuts down all abilities, including Ultras, preventing them from fighting back effectively.

DedSec can be unlocked by purchasing the Founder's Pack, paying 1000 XCoins or by earning a total of 700000 XP.

Tropes that apply to DedSec:

  • Cannot Tell a Joke: Bagley, their announcer, continuing from his origin game.
  • Controllable Helplessness: If a Spiderbot manages to jump onto a target they will only be able to move very slowly, unable to rotate the camera and shoot innacurately.
  • Harmless Electrocution: Averted. A Spiderbot that latches on a target will cause 30HP worth of damage, softening them up for a kill.
  • Hacked by a Pirate: Those under the effect of their Ultra will have their minimap replaced with a DedSec logo, completely obscuring it.
  • Hollywood Hacking: Hijack will turn to their teams side any abilities within range, even if it doesn't make sense (such as turning the gas released by Libertad's El Remedio unable to heal them). Their Lockout Ultra likewise disables all abilities on the field, suposedely, by hacking them, even if they don't have electronic parts in them.
  • Personal Space Invader: Once a Spiderbot locates a target, it will chase it and jump on them, covering their view.
  • Power Nullifier: The main purpose of their Ultra. When deployed enemies are limited to their weapons.
  • Robot Buddy: Bagley. The playable characters also tend to treat the Spiderbot as one.
  • Weapon Twirling: Or Phone Twirling in this case. When activating Lockout the character will perform a little flourish with it.

Year One Factions

All Factions that were made available to play in Year One of XDefiant.

    GSK

Home Series: Rainbow Six

Playable Characters: Kaptan, Krieger, Stark

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gsk_logo.jpg
The GSK's Faction logo

Team Rainbow's GSK (Border Protection Command) operators specialize in crowd control and securing territory.In-game description

Based at Hereford Base, England, Rainbow is a multinational special operations task force operating under NATO supervision, Rainbow was formed in 1999 to combat the rise of terrorist "Free Agents" following the collapse of the Soviet Union. Since its formation, the unit is always run by a Director and Deputy Director. Operatives are recruited from the world's leading counter-terrorism and special forces units including Delta Force, SAS, GSG-9, Spetsnaz, etc.

These elite Team Rainbow operators from Germany's Border Protection Command specialize in crowd control and securing territory. Their Shock Wire slows down and damages anyone who tries to cross it while their Active Defense System will intercept incoming enemy devices. Their Hard Hat passive reduces the damage they take from headshots, giving them greater survival capabilities and finally, their Ultra Flash Shield has them deploy a tactical shield capable of blinding their foes, setting them up for a easy kill.

The GSK were added in Season 1 and can be unlocked by purchasing the Season 1 Battlepass, paying 1000 XCoins or by earning a total of 700000 XP.

Tropes that apply to GSK:

  • Achilles' Heel: Flash Shield grants them a machine pistol to take potshots at targets but in order to use it, the shield is tilted to the side exposing their head. Their passive alleviates this somewhat but their legs remain a easy target.
  • Agony of the Feet: Shock Wire combines this with Shock and Awe. Using it places a coil of electrified barbed wire that slows down and damages anyone who tries to cross it. It also can only destroyed with melee attacks, forcing players to expose themselves to remove it.
  • Blinded by the Light: The titular Flash Shield is capable of doing this.
  • Cool Helmet: They all use an AM95 helmet, like their counterparts in Rainbow Six Siege. It even actually does its job as protection.
  • Gameplay and Story Integration: Their Hard Hat passive reduces damage taken from headshots, and they are the only faction that actually uses helmets.
  • Helmets Are Hardly Heroic: Averted. They are the only ones that use proper helmets AND they have a case of Gameplay and Story Integration with them.
  • Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: Their Flash Shield Ultra grants them a shield with a built in set of highpower flashlights capable of stunning targets. As a bonus they also receive a 93R pistol, letting them attack at a range while active. The shield however lacks the full body cover of the Phantom's Blitz Shield, leaving the legs exposed and their head when aiming the pistol.
  • Mythology Gag: All of their active abilities and their Ultra are drawn from their GSG-9 counterparts in Siege:
    • Shock Wire combines Bandit's deployable ability with barbwire, something he could do in-game as well;
    • Active Defense System brings Jäger's ADS device to the game although it functions nonstop during a set amount of time, with a cooldown between uses rather than having limited ammunition (as it was at launch) or intercepting a throwable every ten seconds (after the Neon Dawn update) ;
    • Flash Shield gives the characters Blitz's G52 Tactical Shield with the exact same mechanics as it was in Siege.
  • Simple, yet Awesome: Unlike other abilities in game, the GSK's Shock Wire and Active Defense System don't require the player to babysit them for their full potential. Just set them down and forget it.
  • The Turret Master: A variant. Like Jäger's ability in Siege their Active Defense System will destroy all throwables that cross its radius, but won't attack enemies.

    Highwaymen

Home Series: Far Cry: New Dawn

Playable Characters: Paulo, Lil'T, Nova

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/highwaymen_logo.jpg
The Highwaymen's Faction logo

This ragtag gang of outlaw bikers emerged from Hope County's nuked-out wasteland to dominate enemies with lethal force.In-game description

The Highwaymen are a federation of different groups of marauders and bikers from post-apocalyptic Hope County, Montana, run by twins Mickey and Lou. Known for their cockiness and indiscriminate lethality, they rush into battle with lots of firepower such as grenade launchers, scrap Turret emplacements, and custom-built saw Launchers. They revel in chaos, being distinctively noticeable by loud music and colorful appearances. The Highwaymen specialize in speed and firepower, able to increase reload speed and fire rate through sustained killstreaks. Their M79 ability lets them use a grenade launcher to deal significant damage to their enemies while their Scrap Turrets places a static emplacement that will shoot at enemies within its range all around it self for area denial. Their Revved passive grants them increasing reload and firing speed as the more kills they score. Finally, their Saw Launcher Ultra sees them use a custom-built, crude "firearm" that shoots saw blades at enemies that will ricochet off of objects and the environment, and instantly kill enemies.

The Highwaymen were added in Season 2 and can be unlocked by purchasing the Season 2 Battlepass, paying 1000 XCoins or by earning a total of 700000 XP with their challenge active.

Tropes that apply to the Highwaymen:

  • Armor Is Useless:Their Post-Apunkalyptic Armor gives them no protection whatsoever from enemy attacks.
  • Attack! Attack! Attack!: Their passive encourages to maintain constant attack on the enemy team in order to max out their Chain Lethality Enabler faster.
  • Chain Lethality Enabler: Their Revved passive grants them a stack of non decaying movement and reload speed buff after scoring a kill, with 4 kills granting even bigger buffs and maxing out at 8 stacks granting a significant buff.
  • Desert Skull: Scrap Turrets have one mounted on top.
  • Foil: To Libertad.
  • Hell-Bent for Leather: They all have significant amounts of leather in their outfits.
  • MacGyvering :All of their equipment is made from random bits of junk, best seen with their Scrap Turret and the Saw Launcher.
  • Never Bareheaded: They all use helmets, which provide no protection.
  • Pinball Projectile: The saw blades launched by their Ultra will ricochet from surfaces and objects to hit enemies. They don't even lose damage from the ricochets but only have 6 shots before ending for balance.
  • Post-Apunkalyptic Armor: A 21st century take on this trope, using leather jackets, extreme sports equipment and modern motorcycle helmets as protection.
  • Stuff Blowing Up: The M79 fires a grenade that explodes on impact with a large blast and is noticeable for being the only ability that uses explosions for dealing damage, with the Cleaners favoring fire instead.
  • The Turret Master: The Highwaymen can place Scrap Turrets that attack any enemy that enters their range, with no blind spots.
  • Weak Turret Gun: Scrap Turrets can deal respectable damage but will go down quickly to enemy fire.
