Hyoki and Rarities

The people hunting the slitterheads, allowing themselves to be possessed by the spirit Night Owl, part of a supposed spirit pair called the "Hyoki."
- Animal Motifs: Julee, Alex, and Anita are represented by a tiger, dragon, and swan respectfully in achievements, alongside aspects of their character design. Julee gets blood claws, Alex has "dragon breath" in the form of his shotgun, and Anita is a beautiful but dangerous person, much like a swan. Could count as Four Gods imagery, with Night Owl acting as the turtle. There's a Japanese koan related to the turtle that says "erasing traces creates traces," which does fit Night Owl's actions as a time traveler who's forgotten the details of what he needs to change.
- Badass Normal: Alex and Blake were already in the fight before meeting Night Owl, Alex driving around with a shotgun in tow, and military vet Blake leading a task force against slitterheads.
- Blood Iron: Their weapons are blood manifested into hard form weapons. Played especially straight with Julee, Alex, and Blake, who make sharp blade and spike style weapons.
- Bloody Murder: With Night Owl around, they all gain access to unique blood powers, based on their given personalities.
- Cast from Hit Points: Anyone Night Owl possesses gets access to their own unique abilities (civilians even get their own pool of basic skills), but using them requires spending blood, so it's important to gather blood from the ground during fights. Thankfully, blood weapons have their own unique meter.
- Cool Mask: All of the rarities hide their face, such as with a scarf or a biker helmet, but a few characters wear masks, Julee and Blake's being full face (a Qilin and clown, respectfully). Averted comically with the homeless Edo, who just wears a paper bag over his head. But it can be upgraded to plastic!
- Early-Bird Cameo: All of the rarities appear in the intro sequence. Alex, Julee, and Blake stick out the most, the former two for their more unique designs, and the latter one for getting the long final scene of the sequence investigating a corpse. Everyone else blends more with the crowd, which was the point, since the idea behind the rarities was to make player characters who look like everyday people.
- Four-Philosophy Ensemble: Night Owl and his first three and most plot important rarities (Julee, Alex, and Anita) form such a dynamic.
- Night Owl is the Realist. He's the decisive leader directing the group, with some input from them, goal focused and logical. He even literally Takes a Third Option as a dialog mechanic when he regains his memories, unlocking the means to end the conflict.
- Julee is the Optimist. She focuses on others, trying to act in a way that helps people directly and always thinking of others first. This is even reflected in her powers, having a revive move alongside her combat abilities, plus a passive that limits damage her combat powers have on civilians. It makes her Night Owl's Morality Pet as a result.
- Alex is the Cynic. He acts first in most every situation, uses logic to justify his harsher actions until White Suit drive him crazy, and is generally very prickly and rude. Telling that one of his unique powers is turning people into time bombs. This makes him a Toxic Friend Influence for Night Owl that Julee has to balance out.
- Anita is the Apathetic. She's the least interested in the slitterhead situation outside it directly effecting her work as a prostitute. She has her own problems, even stating she can't quit her job at one point because she has rent to pay. Fittingly, her unique powers are in the middle ground between Julee's active helpfulness and Alex's overt destructiveness. She can influence and control people to assist her, never putting them in situations that fully help or hurt them, but do help her.
- Freudian Trio: Night Owl, Alex, and Julee form such a trio. Alex is the raging Id, most driven by emotions and a hatred for slitterheads. Night Owl is the Superego, very goal focused and controlling (very literally with the whole possession thing), but his odd circumstances make it so that the rarities can also influence him. Julee ends up as the Ego as a result, preventing Night Owl from overpowering her or others, and more importantly, limiting Alex's influence. This goes out the window thanks to White Suit, and results in the whole confusing Panther Head situation.
- Improbable Weapon User: All of the rarities have blood weapons that take the shape of things significant to their lives, resulting in some bizarre tools.
- Julee enjoys doing her nails, so she gets massive claws from her fingernails.
- Alex is a doctor and creates a giant scalpel.
- Anita creates a giant make-up brush. She uses make-up a lot in her profession, and uses her beauty as a sort of shield and weapon in her everyday life.
- Edo simply makes boxing gloves, since he used to be a boxer.
- Doni creates a giant mechanical pencil, like the one he uses in class.
- Tri creates little blood mittens, which fits for a kind woman who helps people out of the goodness of her heart.
- Blake creates marlinspikes, a knot tool used by the US Navy, which he served in and got his as a gift from his instructor. Also, he used one to kill a child soldier once, and still carries that one around.
- Lastly, Betty the old woman fights with a cane that reminds her of her younger, wilder days.
- Innocent Bystander: Most all of them started as this before Night Owl found them, with exception to monster hunter Alex and soldier Blake. Those two were already fighting slitterheads before Night Owl met them.
- Personality Powers: Everyone's abilities are based on their personalities or professions.
- Julee is the most empathetic and caring of the team, having a healing ability that can help civilians caught in the crossfire, while her combat powers are based around her nail polish hobby.
- Alex's skills either use up enormous amounts of blood or turn their users into suicide bombers, indicating how little he cares for the lives of others in his crusade to exterminate slitterheads.
- Anita can attract and manipulate others into helping her, alongside a poisoning dart move for damage over time. It reflects her The Vamp persona she puts on as armor, able to use her beauty and charm to get others to do what she wants.
- Edo's abilities are all based around his boxing and martial arts skill, including a buff that comes at the cost of weapon durability for sheer power, willing to put it all on the line to win the fight.
- Tri's abilities are mostly support, which fits her helpful personality and profession as a housekeeper. Her chain can lock down enemies for others, she can make enemies bleed more so allies have more blood to heal with on the ground, and her thorns act as sentries that keep enemies busy.
- Doni is a withdrawn boy with a good head on his shoulders, so his abilities reflect his intelligence. His guard counter turns the enemy's strength back at them, his attack move allows him to deal a lot of damage to a line of enemies with one effcient attack, and he can cure status effects so his partner can fight properly. He keeps everyone able to move as they should and make the most of simple moves, instead of wasting energy with aggressive assaults.
- Blake makes use of his military training, using two different firearms for different situational uses, and can lay mines to creat space between him and enemy mobs. He's aggressive and by the book, and reflects that with his powers.
- Betty is wearing a Mask of Sanity and lets it slip with her powers, allowing her to ram through attacks while on the assault, drive other people to fits of rage, and create massive death zones with blood spewed during the battle. It's a hint to the violent and unhinged side she usually hides.
- Ragtag Bunch of Misfits: You got Night Owl some sort of spirit actually a time traveler that possesses people and seems to have little personal agency. Then, you have aspiring actress Julee, doctor and vigilante monster hunter Alex, mixed race prostitute Anita, homeless man and former boxer Edo, Muslim housekeeper Tri, schoolboy Doni, professional monster hunter and possible sociopath Blake, and last and certainly not least, Betty. An old lady who seems to think fairies are real, and that Night Owl is such a fairy. Pretty bizarre team, all things considered, especially since all of them let Night Owl drive them like meat cars.
- Red Eyes, Take Warning: Rarities and occasionally civilians have their eyes glow red with power when Night Owl possesses them. Once Alex corrupts Night Owl, the eye effect becomes blue.
- Tender Tomboyishness, Foul Femininity: Julee and Anita. Julee is a kindhearted tomboy getting by working at a small store while in-between acting jobs, while Anita is a jaded seductress who works as a prostitute.
- Willing Channeler: All of them when recruited, but special mention goes to Blake and Betty. Blake volunteers out of nowhere for possession, while Betty is very polite and will have a patient idle animation waiting for Night Owl to possess her when needed.

A strange spirit who can't remember anything but hatred for slitterheads that can possess others and bond with special humans called rarities.
- Amnesiac Hero: There's a lot Night Owl just doesn't remember, including what he even is. Stuff comes back to him as the story goes on, but nothing substantial for a long time, and before then, he's mostly being guided and influenced by his rarities.
- Anti-Hero: Initially. His lack of personal agency or identity causes him to fall back on a deep hatred of slitterheads as his initial motivation. He softens up with Julee's influence, and later some of the kinder rarities like Tri. He relapses from Alex's influence, but after helping him kill Julee in one timeline, he pops over to a mirror timeline and becomes more overtly heroic.
- Body Surf: His main ability and means of interacting with the world. Night Owl can hijack people and use them to make blood weapons to combat slitterheads.
- Category Traitor: He was labeled a traitor and imprisoned for expressing concerns about DD's plan in the future.
- Comically Missing the Point: Night Owl is so detached from people that he often completely misunderstands basic ideas and concerns. One particularly funny bit early on has Julee expressing worry for her friends and family in the area, which the slitterhead focused Night Owl interprets that she's worried they may be slitterheads, and suggests she takes action if she suspects anything, much to her disappointment in his constant tunnel vision.
- The Corruptible: Due to his lack of identity, he's easily swayed and affected by others. When Alex is one of your allies, this becomes a problem. It leads to the Panther Head situation.
- Draw Aggro: Has a skill called War Cry when possessing regular humans. It draws enemy aggro, turning the person that used it into the target of attack. It's mainly for distracting enemies away from a rarity or creating openings for another possessed body to attack.
- The Engineer: Literally, as in he was an engineer back when he had a body in the future, and that helped him work with DD's time travel tech to try and fix his mentor's mess.
- The Faceless: He's a spirit without a body, just appearing as a yellow glow when we get any visual indicator. He gave up his body to become an information being and come to the past.
- Hunter of Monsters: He may not know why early on, but he has a deep desire to destroy every last slitterhead. Naturally, this is what makes him get along with Alex early on.
- Player and Protagonist Integration: Night Owl is a very interesting example of a Controller type set up for his relationship with the player, because you are controlling him as he controls other characters. Even gets Played With at points when Alex starts gaining control over Night Owl and control over his actions is ripped from you and him both.
- Set Right What Once Went Wrong: His ultimate goal is to clean up the mess of DD, the man he helped build what turned out to be a time machine that caused the creation of the slitterheads and the event that brought their bad future.
- Take a Third Option: After he regains his memory, he can go back to conversations where he didn't have a correct answer before to a question, creating a literal third option you can choose. One of those options is required to unlock the means to defeat White Suit and finally end the three day loop.
- Time Loop Fatigue: By the time he exits the groundhog day loop each time, most likely due to plane crash reset, he's tired and worn down, expressing so before going to himself in the bad future to complete the loop and hope they break it this time.
- Took a Level in Kindness: He's very detached from humanity initially, but Julee's influence, alongside some of the more kind rarities like Tri and Edo, push him into growing genuine empathy. He even starts going out of his way to stop a slitterhead early just to stop a murder it did in a previous loop. Alex slips him up but he comes back with Julee's gambit to shock him to his senses.
- Tragic Time Traveler: His memories make it clear he is going through it. That's not even getting into Panther Head.
Yeah. It's like that.
To make this less confusing, all tropes here relate to any Hyoki who's along for Alex's blue eyed rampage, meaning Night Owl when he starts becoming enslaved to Alex's will in the initial timeline, and then what is known as Panther Head when you face Alex as an enemy.
- Became Their Own Antithesis: Went from a time traveler trying to fix the mess of someone he worked with to a minion to a grief stricken lunatic that wants to trap them in a never ending time loop.
- Evil Counterpart: In the parallel timeline, where he was corrupted by Alex.
- Face–Heel Turn: He got it real bad. When he's trying to crash a plane into the city, it's not even clear if that's an attempt to keep the loop going with a severe change to the past forcing Night Owl back to the start, or if he's just that far gone that he'd rather end everything he tried to fix just to win.
- Final Boss: He's the last obstacle you face, using Alex as his body.
- Nice Job Breaking It, Hero!: Gets a special mention here because crashing that plane into the city does possibly more damage than DD's initial loop creating the slitterheads and causing the cataclysm. He effectively trapped himself in a timeloop where he's forced to fight an alternate self forever - or at least until Night Owl seems to break the cycle at long last in the ending.
- Occult Blue Eyes: Due to Alex's corruption, the glowing eye effect changes from a violent red to a creepy blue. You can see the subtle change after you finish Alex's mission Over Limit, where White Suit reveals he's the slitterhead that killed his family and sending his obsession into overdrive.
- Sharing a Body: An interesting example, because Panther Head can possess other people instead of Alex, but since he's the only rarity left he can bond with, he always has to go back to him to function and survive. When that happens, Alex is usually the one in charge.
- Start of Darkness: We start to see it from the perspective of our original Night Owl, who starts to realize that Alex has very direct influence over him, unable to actually leave his body during an encounter with the Doctor slitterhead.
- Suicidal Cosmic Temper Tantrum: One way to interpret his actions at the end is this, just done dealing with Alex, the time loop, and the slitterheads, and ready to just burn everything down once he's denied his eternal slitterhead slaying loop.
- Took a Level in Jerkass: Alex did a number on him. Funny enough, the first time we get to see this is in the original timeline with our Night Owl, who's slowly becoming the Panther Head fought at the end of the game. Alex's influence is pushing him into using civilians as disposable pawns to slow down Julee and rack up unnecessary causalities. He manages to pull out just long enough for Julee to escape, and becomes divergent from the Panther Head persona we know later in the game after jumping to another timeline.
- The Unfettered: Alex's influence leaves Panther Head without any reservations, even willing to drop a plane on the city to win.

- Boring, but Practical: One of the most basic characters, but always useful. She has a good support ability, and two solid combat skills, one particularly good for chases. She even gets more passives then most everyone else, alongside balanced stats. You can pair her up with most anyone and the match up will work.
- Boyish Short Hair: Has a cute little sprite cut, possibly inspired by Faye from Chungking Express.
- Break the Cutie: Handles the missions after Alex and Anita join poorly, emotionally distraught upon realizing Echoes of Love were serving slitterheads real human brains, and that's not even getting into everything surrounding Alex. She ends up disconnecting from Night Owl as a result, only getting back in the fight when the first Panther Head contacts her and she helps him try to save Night Owl and Alex from their dark path.
- Combat Medic: One of her skills lets her heal other rarities and civilians nearby, avoiding unnecessary deaths and keeping Night Owl stocked with extra bodies.
- Dreaming of Things to Come: While possessed by Night Owl, an encounter with Alex for the first time triggers a vision of the city on fire as three slitterheads floating above watch. She mentions that she could feel herself burning upon waking up from it at her home.
- Fire-Forged Friends: Ends up having this sort of bond with Night Owl, starting off as a distant but necessary partnership, but the forming a bond so strong that her death in one timeline causes Night Owl to somehow break to another timeline where she's still alive. Fittingly, she joins Night Owl in facing Alex and Panther Head after the other rarities are set free to hide from Alex and save themselves.
- Good Is Not Soft: Easily one of the most moral members of the rarities, and yet kills the little girl slitterhead in a gambit to break Night Owl from Alex's influence.
- In the Hood: Wears a hoodie around, and uses it to hide her identity while slitterhead hunting, alongside wearing a full face mask.
- Jack of All Stats: One of the most balanced rarities, having a straight forward and easy to understand combo, basic and useful skills, and no real major strengths or weaknesses.
- Morality Pet: Night Owl is less evil rather than lacking an identity, but it becomes clear that Julee is who gives him his moral compass. Her death is also what snaps him out of Alex's influence.
- Wolverine Claws: Her blood from her fingernails become blood claws as her weapon.

- Action Bomb: His sharable skill "Time Bomb" turns the user into a living explosive with a very short fuse. Rarities can live through the blast, but civilians are killed instantly.
- Anti-Hero: He's a black clad biker facing off against monsters with a shotgun. Unsurprisingly, once you talk to him, you find he carries a lot of bitterness and intensity. White Suit erodes the hero part from him.
- Badass Longcoat: Wears a black biker jacket that goes down low, really selling his cool factor.
- Blood Knight: The darker example of the group. Alex sees the answer to most problems being a shotgun blast to the head, and starts to become addicted to the violence after White Suit breaks his mind.
- The Corruptible: His hatred and obsession make him prime fodder for White Suit.
- Cynicism Catalyst: He already hated slitterheads with a passion and was willing to do some nasty things, but finding out that White Suit killed everyone he loved and is using their likenesses to troll him shatters what moral compass he may have once had. Surprisingly, he does have reasoning for his actions by the end, arguing that doing exactly what White Suit wanted and killing him forever at least traps the slitterheads in this loop with him. It's such a nonsensical argument that it's unclear if he actually believes it, or if it's just a cope to deal with what he's become, especially since White Suit was sealed away, robbing him of his immortal enemy.
- Fantastic Racism: Alex really, really hates slitterheads. That hate only grows further into the story.
- The Friend Nobody Likes: Alex's severe hatred for slitterheads and emotional trauma have him alienating himself from most of the other rarities, partly because he's clearly a bad influence on Night Owl. It gets MUCH worse later.
- Gameplay and Story Integration: During the second loop of Insidious Sucker, if Night Owl is currently in the body of the secondary rarity or a civilian when they see the vision of Lisa's corpse, Alex will get flustered when he starts to pick up on what they're freaking out about and demand Night Owl get back in his body - which then happens, without your input. This is where it becomes clear that Alex is becoming the one in control.
- Glass Cannon: A unique example, because the issue isn't that Alex lacks health or is especially vulnerable. The issue is that Alex's very powerful skills take a crap ton of blood to use, so you need to remember to gather blood during a brawl or he's liable to be at low health very quickly.
- Grief Makes You Crazy: Alex's obsession with slitterheads starts with the death of his family and reaches its peak when one kills Lisa - the same one who killed his family.
- Heroic Willpower: A villainous example, as Alex ends up bending Night Owl to his will through sheer determination and obsession with killing White Suit and all other slitterheads.
- Hero Killer: Kills all of the other rarities except Julee after he completely loses it in order to capitalize on Night Owl's powers, and then kills Julee later in that timeline.
- He Who Fights Monsters: Oh boy, he gets very nasty about hunting slitterheads. Notably, while most every other rarity wants to avoid innocents being hurt or don't show a strong stance on the subject, Alex has the power to turn them into time bombs. No surprise he's the one to shotgun blast two human parents dead for the crime of housing a slitterhead daughter.
- Hot-Blooded: Even says at one point that his blood is boiling. Granted, it's a very dark example since he's boiling with rage, and aiming it at anything related to slitterheads or stopping him from killing slitterheads. You can thank White Suit for that.
- Hunter of Monsters: Obsessed with hunting down and killing slitterheads, though it's doubtful he had much success before Night Owl got involved, seeing how easily he was taken out by a white suited slitterhead in the first timeline. With Night Owl, though...
- Jumping Off the Slippery Slope: Killing slitterheads, even ones that are neutral, trying to prevent their kind from harming humans, or aren't even aware of what they are at least had some logic behind it, since the natural instincts of slitterheads make them inherently dangerous to humans. Killing a child slitterhead's human parents has absolutely no justification beyond uncontrolled, directionless rage.
- Laughing Mad: Once White Suit is sealed away, he completely breaks down and starts laughing, having lost any remaining reason to continue existing.
- Loss of Identity: Says as much after White Suit is sealed away, leaving him with not even something to kill to release his rage.
- Rival Final Boss: The final boss with Panther Head, acting as a sort of rival character to Julee, his hyoki even having a blue theme instead of red.
- Roaring Rampage of Revenge: He has a very personal vendetta against slitterheads. It becomes unfocused thanks to White Suit, leading to him killing the other rarities to gain control of Night Owl, the source of his new powers, and continuing his endless revenge in a never ending time loop.
- Sawed-Off Shotgun: His weapon of choice, and he gets a unique blood version as a rarity.
- Smoking Is Cool: Will sometimes celebrate a successful mission by lighting a cigarette, possibly something added to him from his visual inspiration, the hitman from Fallen Angels.
- Time Bomb: One of his unique powers is turning people Night Owl possesses into time bombs.
- Tranquil Fury: Alex is basically a Terminator in the game's second half, saving his words and sticking to unrestrained, swift violence. There's even a sightjack scene where you see him and Panther Head slowly walking up to a slitterhead, who starts running away in terror.
- Vigilante Man: An especially dark example of a "bad" vigilante. He starts out concerning from his intense hatred of slitterheads and how quick he is to draw a weapon on someone in his way or is some sort of unknown factor (like Night Owl when possessing Julee). Then Lisa is killed by White Suit, and boy...
- Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds: Dear god. White Suit killing Lisa completely breaks him, to the point he becomes completely fine killing the thing in a never ending time loop for eternity, killing the other rarities to make it happen.

- Boyish Short Hair: The hair you usually see on her seems to be a wig. She's not wearing it on occasion during talk sessions with Night Owl or other rarities, showing she has a similar hairstyle to Julee, though her hair color seems to be almost silver from what can be made out.
- Broken Bird: Her mixed race heritage and tragic childhood have left Anita pretty cold. She's not a bad person by any means, but she puts up a distant persona in order to protect herself from life's harshness.
- Deadpan Snarker: Very unimpressed by just about everyone and constantly making jabs at others, very often in a bored, deadpan way.
- Fantastically Indifferent: Mostly just annoyed by the presence of slitterheads affecting her job and not so much almost killing her.
- Hidden Depths: She plays dating sims, actually asking Doni to visit her at her "office" to give her advice on which route to go for.
- Jack of All Stats: The most balanced of the rarities alongside Julee. To set her apart, she has extremely unique skills that make her suited for a slower, more methodical style of play, making her able to hold her own while making a great choice for a Support Party Member that doesn't have the expected healing skill.
- Knight in Sour Armor: Despite her blasé attitude, ribbings, and sharp critiques, Anita does help out the team when needed, and has some cute interactions here and there.
- Stripperiffic: Fights in a skin tight, short cut Qipao - aka, her work uniform as a prostitute. Lines up with everyone else but Alex wearing some form of their civvie clothes, and has an additional character layer in that Anita uses her looks as a form of armor and weapon to face the world. She even says so for why she uses make-up so often in a chat with Night Owl.
- Makeup Weapon: Creates and uses a giant make-up brush as a rarity, due to her attachment to make-up as her means to face the world around her.
- Mind Control: Has a limited version of this she can use on non-possessed people, making them attack a nearby enemy for a short time.
- The Minion Master: Anita can summon people to the area by spreading her blood. She even has a power that makes them fight without being possessed.
- The Oldest Profession: Took to prostitution after a rough home life, seeing her natural beauty as one of the few things that she could use to make a living.
- Poisoned Weapons: Can throw blood darts that poison anything hit by them, doing some damage over time.
- Proud Beauty: Anita has more than a few self-esteem issues related to her less than ideal childhood and her mixed race heritage subjecting her to prejudice, but one thing she's very proud of is her natural beauty. She even tries to weaponize it as a means to face the rough world around her. Fitting two of her powers are a sort of take on this, attracting and manipulating other people.
- Redheads Are Ravishing: Purposefully plays into this with her red wig, while her natural hair color seems to be silver or white.
- Sci-Fi Bob Haircut: The wig she wears around has this sort of look, with a hairline that frames her eyes. Considering the game is set in the 90s, it would make sense to see this hairstyle around as it was becoming a popular retro look at the time.
- Seduction as One-Upmanship: Got revenge on two awful female members of her family by stealing their men. She left not long after that for obvious reasons.
- Smoking Is Glamorous: Like Alex, lights up on occasion after a successful mission, and since it's the sultry Anita, she makes it more glamorous than cool.
- Unfazed Everyman: Anita is too busy worrying about paying rent to really care that much about the craziness around her. She's also unimpressed with Night Owl's time rewind limit being three days.
- The Vamp: A rare heroic example. Anita purposefully plays up her sexuality and beauty as part of her job, and applies the same to fighting slitterheads, her unique powers even reflecting tropes that would pair well with the character (attracting people, getting people to go after her enemies, poisoned finesse weapons).

- Blood Knight: A more lighthearted example. He's excited to get possessed because it puts him back in fighting shape.
- Boxing Battler: Edo was a former boxer, so his fighting style is all based around his boxing prowess. That said, his combo works in an odd palm strike and a kick here and there, but considering how much he drinks, that may be a Drunken Boxing touch to his style.
- Brown Bag Mask: His disguise of choice is putting a brown paper bag with cut eye holes over his head. It can be upgraded to plastic, if you put in the effort to get the unlock.
- Canine Companion: Has a pet dog with him. Said dog actually saves his life by directing Night Owl to him during a slitterhead attack.
- Cloudcuckoolander: You have to wonder at times if he's even aware that he's being controlled by Night Owl, or if he's even aware just how much danger he's often in. He just laughs off encountering a brain eating monster when you first get him, going back to drinking in an alley. That's not even getting into just how happy he is digging through trash (though he does know who throws out the good food).
- The Cynic: His thoughts on Yin Yue reveal him as this, having had been disillusioned at some point in the past that he was genuinely surprised that Yin Yue seemed so genuine in trying to help the people in his cult - only to be extremely disappointed to be proven right about his previous world view once he finds out about the brain rations, one of them being Bik-yee. In a later convo, he reveals that he lost a fight pretty bad, ending his career, which lead to his manager cheating him out of money, discovering a mess of debts he genuinely did not remember having, and his marriage crumbling under the pressure of the situation. Part of what he seems to like about his current state, bitter feelings aside, is that he no longer has to deal with that pressure.
- Drunken Master: Has the flavor of one with all the alcohol he drinks, and odd touches to his fighting style that don't mesh with boxing.
- Glass Cannon: He gets a very useful dash and a mode that can auto-parry any blockable attack for a time, giving him a lot of options to get into the fight. Once he's in there, he becomes a problem. However, his health pool is quite low, and the game suggests you pair him up with someone with healing skills.
- Homeless Hero: Don't be fooled by his looks, Edo is a skilled fighter who doesn't hesitate to brawl when needed, and it's an absolute sweetheart of a guy. Despite how he first comes off as a wacky homeless guy, he proves himself to be one of the most overtly heroic characters...if a bit unaware of just how much danger he's in at any given moment.
- No-Sell: His Repel All skill gives him a buff for a few seconds that lets him parry any blockable attack that comes at him as long as he stays focused.
- Poverty for Comedy: Edo's homeless status definitely gets played for laughs and gags, but the comedy is less that he's homeless, but that he's loving being homeless. Night Owl is perplexed by him early on because of how much satisfaction he gets from slumming it in an alley or looking for food in the garbage, and his explanations show that he's genuine, so much so that his joy becomes infectious.
- Power at a Price: One of his skills lets him get a huge damage boost at the cost of blood weapon durability. Pairing it with repel all helps, but costs a lot of blood to pair the two up.
- Street Smart: Edo knows a thing or two about living on the streets, like tricking Japanese tourists into buying cigarettes while saying it's weed, or when to dig through the trash of the wealthy for barely touched food.
- Video Game Dashing: Gets a useful dash ability that lets him position out of an enemy's attack range. He can also attack cancel out of it, giving him a high skill ceiling.
- Weak, but Skilled: Edo has a low health pool and a short range. However, his blood skills are very unique. His powers are buffs that allow him to automatically parry any blockable attack that comes his way, a massive damage boost at the cost of damage durability, and a low cost combat dash. That dash is especially powerful because you can cancel it with an attack, meaning Edo can get on the offensive by weaving through enemy attacks in ways nobody else can. The game's tutorial outright says he's one of the most technical rarities.

- Big Fun: A heavier set woman with a goofy sense of humor and a happy outlook on the world around her. When she's not working, she's pretty fun to hang out with.
- Chain Pain: Her blood chain doesn't actually hurt anyone, but it does keep them tied to her area, limiting their movement.
- Combat Medic: Unlike Julee, Tri doesn't heal things herself. Instead, her specialty is causing enemies to make larger blood pools when damaged, making it easier to heal with blood in the field. She does this by activating a buff that makes her blood mittens cause more bleeding. More combat than medic, but the effect still means more means to heal.
- Draw Aggro: Her thorn sentries do this, but her blood chain also allows her to do this herself to keep an enemy focused on her and in one area, limiting their movement and making them easier to hit from behind with another character.
- Good Old Fisticuffs: Another hand to hand fighter with Edo, though she lacks his boxing skill and self buffs.
- Gut Feeling: Has what she calls "housekeeper intuition," letting her know that something is off about a situation or person. Apparently her encounter with a hungry slitterhead when you meet her wasn't even the first time she's had to deal with threat of being eaten by their kind. She mentions a similar encounter with a former employer, and Night Owl is baffled she managed to survive. She even had a hunch that something was up with Yin Yue.
- Mighty Glacier: A bit on the slow side, having an awkward combo style to Edo without his dash or deflect mode. However, she does good damage and can distract enemies with her thorns on the field, and use a blood chain to keep them near her, which stays between her and the targeted enemy when you possess someone else. This makes her both solid offense and an excellent support character.
- Power Fist: Her blood mittens don't look that dangerous, but she can activate a buff that makes them draw more blood.
- Sentry Gun: Tri can set blood thorns on the ground as a hazard that fire shots for small damage that distracts enemies.
- You No Take Candle: Her speech has a bit of this, particularly in how she tends to end sentences with questions to continue a conversation. She's an immigrant from the Middle East who doesn't seem to have any significant education, unlike Blake and Betty, so her Chinese is still a bit rough and expressed so in how her text is written differently from everyone else.

- Anti-Debuff: One of his skills can cure him and allies of debuffs, plus prevent the effects of new ones for a short period of time.
- Attack Reflector: Unlike most versions of a deflector ability, Doni still takes a bit of damage, but greatly reduced, in a guard stance. When the stance ends, he returns the damage taken back at the enemy.
- Chekhov's Gunman: Probably the least important rarity to the overall story and least connected to the factions or other characters, or so it seems. There's a reason the strange calls Julee gets from the future are giving hints that lead you to finding him. Come the final stretch after Night Owl regains his memories, and when he answers a question Doni asked about how he would deal with an unbeatable foe, he can now answer with the correct answer of sealing it away, remembering an old plan he had with a special device. This ends up triggering Doni as he receives a message from the future that gives Night Owl access to a tool he hid away that can seal away White Suit.
- Nerd Glasses: Bordering on Opaque Nerd Glasses, just lacking the whiting out effect.
- One-Hit Polykill: His offensive skill lets him charge up a blood javelin he can toss out that pierces through enemies, hitting everything in a straight line.
- Ordinary High-School Student: Very much so, to go with the goal of filling most of the rarity cast with everyday people. He's just your run of the mill nerdy teenager, just occasionally piloted by a mysterious spirit who turns his blood into powerful weapons to fight horrible sea creature bug monsters.
- The Pen Is Mightier: Fights with a giant mechanical pencil.
- Shrinking Violet: A shy kid who has trouble talking to other people and tends to retreat into his music collection to drown out his loneliness.
- Support Party Member: More so than anyone else. He does have a strong attack skill, but otherwise has trouble surviving and going on the offense, the game suggesting you use him with a more offensive focused rarity.

- The Ace: He's had more training and experience than anyone else, and a very straightforward and easy to understand fighting style that can melt slitterheads.
- Anti-Hero: There's a particularly telling optional dialog that reveals he's not as straight an arrow as he first appears, talking about the time he killed a child soldier in a matter of fact manner, and just sort of musing about how he keeps the murder tool (that is the inspiration for his blood weapon and a gift from his military instructor). The event weighs on him but he focuses on the mission ahead of him to drown out the guilt and tells himself it was a kill or be killed situation.
- BFG: His ridiculous blood chaingun is absurdly big. It's almost comical just due to how fast it disappears when switched for another weapon or power.
- Blade Below the Shoulder: His blood marlinspikes cover his hands entirely when they're out.
- Chainsaw-Grip BFG: How he uses his absurd blood chaingun.
- Dual Wielding: Makes two blood marlinspikes to fight with in melee, when not blasting enemies from a distance.
- Excellent Judge of Character: A single conversation with Julee at her convenience store job tells him that she's indeed just a normal girl and severely struggling under the weight of her responsibility to fight the slitterheads, making it clear to Night Owl to give her some support.
- Fantastic Firearms: Fights by creating blood guns that shoot his own blood as bullets, eating into his health.
- Glass Cannon: Has very powerful skills like Alex, but also shares a similar flaw of high blood cost, meaning you need to watch your power use.
- Jumped at the Call: He's the only Rarity who reaches out to Night Owl directly, despite the two of them never meeting in person and Night Owl butchering many of his subordinates.
- Land Mine Goes "Click!": He can lay mines on the field for enemies to run into and blow up in their faces.
- More Dakka: Can form a ridiculous looking blood chaingun to fire out blood bullets in a nasty spray.
- Punch-Packing Pistol: Makes use of a blood pistol alongside his blood chaingun for ranged combat.
- Survivor Guilt: Suffering from this to some extent over a child soldier he killed, dealing with it by focusing on the here and now.
- Unwitting Instigator of Doom: According to Night Owl's recovered memories, the operation to round up slitterheads Blake ran led to the event that brought in the bad future.

- Cane Fu: Her blood weapon is a cane, fitting for an elderly woman.
- Cloudcuckoolander: One of the stranger members of the team, referring to Night Owl as a fairy. She's often in her own little world.
- High-Class Gloves: Betty is a wealthy woman, which doesn't come up too much outside her fashion sense, and especially her fancy gloves.
- Human Notepad: She has "GSTQ" written on her hand, the initials for "God Save The Queen." She wrote them there when she saw the queen of England one day as a reminder of her glory...and made sure it stayed there by doing an improvised tattoo job, carving and inking it in. Even Night Owl has no idea how to respond to that information.
- Immune to Flinching: Able to activate a mode similar to Edo's No-Sell Deflect All, except she just gets high resistance to stunning and flinching, while also getting a bonus when attacking an enemy during their attack.
- Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Can weaponized blood pools that have yet to be soaked up for health with one of her powers, causing them to create gigantic spikes for a moment and severely damage anything in the area.
- Lightning Bruiser: Easily the strongest of the rarities, even if she doesn't look it! She has better blood usage control than Blake or Alex, while also coming with a very powerful buff that lets her just wail into fights without having to worry about being slapped around nearly as much as anyone else. Her only drawback is a lack of support skills beyond getting a possessed target to act as a decoy.
- Fangirl: She was a huge fan of Edo back in his boxing days and is delighted to see he's a member of the rarities.
- Mask of Sanity: She seems loopy but harmless at first with her fairy talk, but her frankly terrifying blood skills and hints at a wild youth that included holding a man hostage suggest she's putting on a front.
- Old Friend: How she sees Night Owl, remembering him as a fairy from her days as a child. Night Owl can't remember her well but does mention feeling like he's met her many times before, though this may be more him starting to remember his time loop situation. Blake had a similar story of encountering a spirit like Night Owl, though Betty outright seems to know Night Owl specifically, and can spot him within possessed targets on some level based on interactions you have to take to unlock her.
- Opposites Attract: According to her, the cane she carries around belonged to her former husband, who she describes as very logical. Betty herself thinks fairies are real and that Night Owl is such a fairy, and that's not even getting into her suggested wild side.
- Unstoppable Rage: One of her blood powers works like Alex's Time Bomb, needing to be used when Night Owl possesses a non-rarity. However, instead of making someone literally explode, they instead metaphorically explode with a berserker mode that has them viciously attacking non stop as their blood slowly drains. It's sort of like Anita's Mind Control specified on one person. Also, this may be true of Betty herself, if Edo's recounting of her having once gotten mad about a scam and taking a hostage over it is in any way accurate. She sure left quick when he brought it up!
Slitterheads

- Armed Legs: A few types of slitterhead can change stance to have their legs, or what can be considered legs, act as their method of attack for a bit.
- Bizarre Alien Limbs: Not uncommon on slitterheads, though their limbs are of Earthly origin, just from non-human sources like octopi, crustations, and insects.
- Body Surf: This seems to be how they reproduce, able to take over the body of a human being and create a new slitterhead that way. This also seems to mix consciousness together, as we see with Tommy and Bik-Yee. White Suit makes the most use out of it, adding the consciousnesses of all of Alex's family to its own so it can mimic them with aid of its time travel powers.
- Brain Food: Their main source of food is human brains, which they can suck out of people with straw like appendages.
- Combat Tentacles: The main limbs of octopi style slitterheads, White Suit being the most significant example.
- Cursed with Awesome: Slitterheads have a ton of natural advantages over humans, making them perfect predators. So what's the cursed part? Well, there an unexpected side effect of their brain eating needs, as sometimes they take on the emotions of the humans they eat. This can manifest as being taken over by a human personality, sometimes with severe emotional turmoil as the human personality can't mesh right with the natural instincts of a slitterhead.
- Elite Mooks: Revealed slitterheads that remain in human bodies, having greater reach than other enemies and often more health.
- Horror Hunger: Slitterheads have to feast on human brains to survive, or else lose grasp on their humanity.
- The Hunter Becomes the Hunted: What Night Owl and his rarities end up doing to the slitterheads, especially since Night Owl comes from a bad future where the slitterheads hunted humans like him for food, meaning his actions in the past completely flip that dynamic.
- It Can Think: It really trips up Night Owl and Julee upon finding out that slitterheads seem to have complex human emotions like loyalty, though it helps Night Owl remember this is a side effect of their brain eating.
- Kill and Replace: Their whole thing is hiding in plain sight as normal humans, until it's too late for their victim to get away. The replace part is a tad more complicated then normal, though (see Body Surf).
- Multipurpose Tongue: Especially in human disguise. White Suit using his in Lisa's form to impail Alex is genuinely creepy, especially when he retracts it after reforming Lisa's head.
- People Farms: Night Owl's memories mention the slitterheads turning humans into livestock in his bad future.
- Predators Are Mean: A side effect of the brain eating granting personality results in a lot of slitterheads being sadistic eaters, mainly the more powerful ones, especially the big three from the prophetic dream ie Michelle, Yin-Yue's slitterhead personality, and especially White Suit.
- Reduced to Dust: The ultimate fate of any killed slitterhead, seemingly becoming sand, as if they dehydrated severely. This is averted with powerful slitterheads like Yin Yue and Michelle, who instead get the Body to Jewel treatment before crumbling to crystal dust. White Suit instead sparkle dissolves as his time travel powers kick in.
- Ripple-Effect-Proof Memory: Not all of them, but stronger slitterheads seem aware of timeline changes, which seems to cause some of the massive changes to events when revisited. Boss from The Golden Qilin seems very aware that he was defeated in a previous loop, and even Tommy has some residual awareness at one point of meeting Night Owl, though it's hazy. White Suit is fully aware of all changes, and can dish them out himself as a full on time traveler.
- Slaying Mantis: One class of the slitterheads turn into giant preying mantises in their One-Winged Angel form. It's fitting that most of the mantis slitterheads are prostitutes.
- Suspiciously Similar Substitute: Bare a lot of similarities to the parasites from Parasyte in their tactics, intelligence, and the revenge of nature connection, this time through time travel shenanigans. Considering the manga was an inspiration for the game, this is not surprising.
- There's also some similarities to enemies from the Siren games (which had the same director). The big connective tissue is that slitterheads have a lot of aquatic and bug themes, like the Shibitio and Yamibito, and are mockeries of humans. They start drifting into Contrasting Sequel Antagonist from there, though, their origins less eldrich and more time travel sci-fi, and they're actually able to mimic humans well.
- They Look Like Us Now: They can wear the bodies of their victims as meat suits, and even trade them out, as we see from the heart necklace wearing slitterhead on the second loop.
- True Sight: All of them instantly pick out Night Owl, no matter who he possesses.
- Was Once a Man: Originally all of them were humans from the future that were warped by the means of time travel, which also completely scoured them of all their original memories.

- Actually a Doombot: One of his favorite tricks. Appears multiple times during Over Break in the guises of Lisa and Alex's family. Unclear if he's using time travel shenanigans to have multiple versions converge on one spot, or if he's literally multiple versions of himself as apart of how slitterhead reproduction seems to work.
- Arch-Enemy: To Alex, and by his design.
- Blood Knight: A dark, sadistic example. All of the hatred and cruelty is nothing without some good fights to go along.
- Break Them by Talking: Does one of these during his first fight to dig into Alex's and Night Owl's heads and sow the seeds for what's coming.
- Catchphrase: "I'll remember that face." Uses it to tease his victims and make clear his special attention towards someone. Alex is first, and then with Lisa (possibly in a dream somehow) to signal that he's Not Quite Dead.
- The Chessmaster: While White Suit is very clearly loving what they're doing, his actions are well planned and cause the Night Owl and Panther Head split, plus gets Alex to kill the other rarities, a major boon to the slitterheads as a species. Plus, he gets an eternal enemy to play around with for all eternity.
- The Corrupter: To Alex and, by extension, Night Owl. He's successful.
- Disappears into Light: Has a unique death animation where he becomes sprinkles of light as his body dissolves. This turns out to be a sign of him sending his consciousness back to a previous self in the past.
- The Dog Was the Mastermind: Remember that random slitterhead that knocked Alex off his motorcycle? Yeah, he's a time traveler, the game's big bad, and severely fractures the rarity alliance.
- Evil Counterpart: To Alex. They're both very self obsessed people who choose their own interests and desires over anyone else's. However, Alex does form genuine connections and does try to help people, despite his darker obsessions and cruel impulsive actions. White Suit is just a Straw Nihilist who loves to cause pain and suffering for his own amusement. Alex's fall comes due to White Suit using that lack of morals to strip him of all he loves and turn himself into the focal point of Alex's hatred, eroding that moral compass with out his Morality Chain Lisa to keep him in check.
- Faux Affably Evil: Whatever politeness he shows tends to get drowned out by his obsessively cruel actions, including revealing he killed Lisa by taking her form to get Alex from behind, and rubbing salt in the wound by saying her brain was delicious.
- Hope Crusher: Crosses over with his Troll tendencies. It wasn't enough to just Kill and Replace all of Alex's loved ones, he went the extra mile and sat on the back of his bike as Lisa in the intro upon a rewind past the three day loop start just to give him a scare and really grind away any remaining hope.
- I Shall Taunt You: He's a nasty little jerk to Alex, especially when in Lisa's skin.
- Jerkass Has a Point: What makes him such an effective antagonist is that he's completely correct about Alex's many faults and how similar he is to the monsters he fights, worse in some respects.
- Just Toying with Them: He's holding back in most fights, just happy to mess around with Alex and Night Owl to get under their skin and test out his new enemy.
- Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Come the second enounter with him and...White Suit: It's finally time for the last boss. Did you save your game?
- Mental Time Travel: His method of time travel, sending his consciousness back in time to a past version of himself with all knowledge and memories whenever he dies.
- Me's a Crowd: Takes over Alex's family and his nurse, Lisa, all at the same time via his time travel powers.
- No Name Given: Unlike Michelle and Yin Yue, White Suit is a slitterhead that presents himself just as a slitterhead and only wears the skins of other characters he killed to screw with people. The subtitles and credits just list him as "White Suit" for his fetching wear.
- "Not So Different" Remark: Points out how monstrous Alex is during their first fight after he calls White Suit such. Considering how Alex so easily accepts White Suit's created scenario of fighting each other in an endless time loop, all so he can kill slitterheads endlessly, makes it clear he was right on the money (though he also pushed him over the edge as well).
- Sealed Evil in Another World: His ultimate fate is to be sealed away in a place beyond this reality by Night Owl's secret weapon.
- Straw Nihilist: Seems to be his whole deal, knowing how meaningless everything is within the time loop and having fun with it the best he can. This includes completely breaking Alex's psyche to create a forever enemy. One of his henchmen even directly quotes Nietzsche.
- Tentacled Terror: His true form leans very hard into this, even with an octopi head - unless he's using Lisa's head to mess with Alex.
- Troll: Constantly pokes at Alex's and Night Owl's insecurities to break their resolve - and also just to fuck with them. His actions do seem to have a greater purpose of breaking Alex and causing Night Owl to be neutralized as a result, but he's clearly having a lot of fun doing it as well. Going out of his way to kill all of Alex's loved ones just to pretend to be them and described how he killed them is really going the extra mile.
- Human Resources: He takes brains from corpses sent to a morgue and gives them to slitterheads so they can survive without hunting.
- Innocent Bystander: Based on what we see and what he does, he seems to be a genuinely innocent party trying to help neutral slitterheads with their Horror Hunger via a deal with a morgue to get brains from corpses sent there. It makes what Alex does to him genuinely upsetting. He only fights back when the peaceful option is rejected, fully aware he can't win, expressing confusion and sadness as to why Alex and Night Owl would hurt him when he hasn't hurt anyone.
- No Name Given: We just know him as "Doctor."
- Small Role, Big Impact: The Doctor is a minor character in the grand scheme of things, only appearing in one Alex level. However, he ends up directing Alex and Night Owl to the little girl slitterhead and her family, which in turn ends up playing a huge role in Alex's eventual Face–Heel Turn. Night Owl also realizes in a later loop rematch that Alex has gained control over him, leaving him unable to question the Doctor.
The Golden Qilin
- Den of Iniquity: Run some, and Night Owl and Julee visit one early on to investigate possible slitterhead ties. Naturally, this one appears in future loops.
- Literal Maneater: The prostitute slitterhead that Night Owl meets in the prologue level is a member of the Golden Qilin, and it's implied that there are others in the organization using The Oldest Profession to have easy access to prey.
- Luring in Prey: Their control of the underground, especially prostitution and gambling rings, means that they can just let prey come to them with ease, while staying under the radar of potential enemies. When Night Owl and Julee kill Boss in the first loop, they end up negating that advantage and the organization ends up in a You Have Outlived Your Usefulness situation and all non-slitterhead members are slaughtered.
- Out of Focus: Despite their large presence for the first loop and connection to Anita, they're probably the least fleshed out of the three major antagonist groups. Heck, they're no longer a factor in the story by the time Alex is sending the story crashing after being driven mad by White Suit.
- The Triads and the Tongs: To be expected from a Chinese criminal organization, even with the slitterhead influence.
- You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Michelle has all the humans in the organization killed in the second loop, saying they no longer have use for them. Seems to be due to recruiting Anita and Boss remembering how he was found and killed by Night Owl and Julee made it clear they could no longer rely on The Golden Qilin to hide in plain sight.

- The Dragon: To Michelle, though he denies that he's just her lackey and states that he's fighting you again for his own reasons.
- No Name Given: Doesn't even get the dignity of getting a proper name, despite being fought twice and trying to put up a front of strength and resolve.
- Starter Villain: One of the first truly intelligent slitterhead Night Owl faces, but gets demoted to lacky in future appearances for Michelle.
- This Cannot Be!: He is absolutely baffled that he could have been killed like he was in the first loop.

- Arch-Enemy: To Anita, whom she manipulated for her own purposes and end goal of either eating her or making her a slitterhead - or possibly both, knowing how complicated slitterhead reproduction is. Anita even gets some extra dialog with her if you bring her for her boss battle.
- Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: She gave Anita's life direction and the two clearly meant a lot to each other. Unfortunately, she's a slitterhead who was grooming Anita to possibly become a monster like her.
- Broken Pedestal: For Anita, due to her being a slitterhead who was manipulating her.
- Consuming Passion: There's definitely an undercurrent with this in how she acts around Anita early on, and how she talks about what minds she likes best for devouring.
- Disk-One Final Boss: She's the first of the three nightmare slitterheads you manage to kill, before Alex causes the plot to steer wildly out of control.
- Evil Counterpart: To Anita. They're both women who used their looks and intelligence to get ahead of their enemies, but Anita actually has a moral compass, while Michelle is a genuinely cruel person who tosses people away the moment they no longer have use to her. That's not even getting into the being a slitterhead thing.
- Evil Mentor: She took a special interest in Anita because it seemed she wanted to turn her into a slitterhead and bring her into the fold. It's unknown if she loved Anita in some way, or was just interested in her natural beauty.
- Flashy Teleportation: In her One-Winged Angel form.
- The Oldest Profession: In charge of the organization's prostitutes, including Anita, who she has a special interest in.
- One-Winged Angel: After defeating her first form, which is basically like the usual slitterhead but with more complex attack patterns, she transforms into a new floating form with psychic powers that can use projectiles seemingly made from blood and a Laser Cutter attack.
- The Queenpin: Turns out that she's the actual leader of The Golden Qilin, the head slitterhead - and one of the three in Julee and Night Owl's apocalypse nightmare.
- Raven Hair, Ivory Skin: Plays into traditional beauty standards of the region by adding some white make-up to her face to contrast with her black hair.
- Sexy Slit Dress: While Anita wears a dress that doesn't cover her legs at all, Michelle's Qipao covers them the entire length, while leaving slits to show her thighs.
- Silk Hiding Steel: While Anita is more obviously rough around the edges, Michelle plays into the beautiful, fragile woman image while being one of the three most powerful slitterheads in the city.
Echoes of Love
- Cult: A pretty benign one, up until Yin Yue realizes The Master is dead.
- A House Divided: Their ultimate fate is a mass of fractures in the members over coming to realize the dark secrets Yin Yue was hiding and Yin Yue's now unleashed dark side corrupting the slitterhead members into embracing their predatory instincts. The last we see of them are human and slitterhead members violently murdering one another.
- Human Resources: Echoes of Love, notably, has a prison. Considering the brains in bins we find later supposedly done as a last resort after their rations got raided by raider slitterheads, one has to wonder if they store the rations in, say, a prison filled with people with delicious brains.

- Alliterative Name: Yin Yue.
- Broken Pedestal: To Night Owl and Julee, who were starting to have hope for sliterheads and humans having a way to co-exist - only to find out that Yin Yue has been feeding his followers human brains. Edo is also extremely disappointed by the turn of events, having thought Yin Yue was the real deal in his sincerity to help people.
- The Corrupter: The dark side of Yin Yue is this and goes full in on it after the second trip to the S.P.E.U raid on Echoes of Love.
- Dark Shepherd: On the surface, Yin Yue is a straight arrow trying to help his people, but it starts to become clear he's more complicated than that. He didn't jump directly in to save his flock from S.P.E.U but instead observed initially before entering the fray, and his "rations" seem to be brains taken from prisoners, and in dire circumstances, some of his followers. This can partly be chalked up to the slitterhead persona peaking out.
- Disc-One Final Boss: Can be fought before Alex hyjacks the plot, same as Michelle.
- Enemy Mine: He entrusts Night Owl to protect his people on two separate occasions while he has to deal with other threats. He doesn't trust him, but does realize they share a common enemy in the slitterheads attacking the cult's base.
- Evil Counterpart: Besides having his own via Split Personality, he's this to Julee. They're idealistic people who want to do good struggling with another intelligence affecting their sense of self. However, while Julee manages to redeem Night Owl as his moral center, Yin Yue falls to his darker side and can only hope Night Owl and the rarities manage to kill him before he does any more harm.
- Eye Scream: His slitterhead form has dangling eyes coming out the sockets.
- Go Mad from the Revelation: When he's confronted about his brain rations and Bik-yee's fate, he starts to freak out, having no idea what Night Owl is talking about. He goes to The Master for guidance, only to pull off the corpse's arm and finally realize he's dead, finally letting the seal fully off his darker personality.
- Heroic Willpower: Turns out that Yin Yue was such a good, strong willed person in life that his personality managed to keep the slitterhead one that devoured him dormant and acting in the interest of Echoes of Love. Then his psyche breaks when Night Owl and the rarities start a domino effect that lead to him realizing The Master is dead.
- I Cannot Self-Terminate: During the second version of the S.P.E.U raid on Echoes of Love, Yin Yue asks Night Owl to kill him while he still has his mind, realizing he's losing control to his evil slitterhead side. Sadly, the arrival of some slitterhead followers triggers the dark side back to the surface and transforms them before making his escape.
- Leaking Can of Evil: Even before Night Owl makes him realize The Master was dead, there's clear signs that his slitterhead dark side is managing to poke out. It only gets worse due to Night Owl's interventions. It carries over timelines too, since the slitterhead side clearly remembers Night Owl when they go back to the first day to confront Yin Yue before he saves his people.
- Long-Haired Pretty Boy: Very much so with his long white hair.
- Biomanipulation: While all especially powerful slitterheads have the power to turn humans into strange creatures, Yin Yue gets special mention because we actually see him do it multiple times.
- Meaningful Name: His name is Yin Yue, which may bring to mind the concept of yin-yang
, where two polar opposites that exist alongside side one another. One such dual set of forces is often light and darkness, yin for the former and yang the latter. His name has the "yin," implying that Yin Yue is the "light." There is indeed "darkness" dwelling inside him... - Mental World: During his boss battle, about three forths through his life bar, he'll show you his mind scape as you fight some smaller fights while slowed down and discover more about his headspace and what happened to The Master, along with his troubled relationship with him.
- Mystical White Hair: Has white hair and is a savior figure to his cult. He's also not human, but a slitterhead, though his hair may have pre-dated that.
- One-Man Army: Takes on an entire squad of S.P.E.U agents without a sweat to save some neutral slitterheads in his introduction. He even starts the fight by using a single palm to stop an armored truck. Impressive, considering his slitterhead side isn't even awakened at the time.
- One-Winged Angel: Just like Michelle, who you will probably unlock as a fight first, his second form levitates and uses similar powers.
- Rage Against the Mentor: Judging by the horrific state of The Master's body, Yin Yue eventually snapped at some point on him, but it's not clear if this was before or after becoming a slitterhead.
- Reformed Criminal: Used to be a pickpocket before The Master took him in.
- Sealed Inside a Person-Shaped Can: Thanks to Yin Yue's strong moral compass and willpower, the slitterhead that replaced him was sealed by his humanity, which allowed Yin Yue to continue leading Echoes of Love and helping neutral slitterheads after his death. And then he finds out The Master was dead the entire time...
- Split Personality: His human persona and his slitterhead side are at opposite ends, the former unaware of the latter. Night Owl theorizes that this darker personality may have been the result of some stored up trauma, let loose when a slitterhead assimilated him.
- Tragic Villain: Yin Yue had it rough. He lived a hard life, only to end up in an abusive relationship of some sort with an alcoholic cult leader, and eventually was devoured by a slitterhead that took on his personality. He had only good intentions, but the circumstances of his situation made it so that he could only really bring harm to others, which became even worse when Night Owl's actions end up making his human side weaken when his mental block over the Master's fate finally shattered.
- Well-Intentioned Extremist: Is genuinely trying to bridge the divide between humanity and slitterheads. Even Edo remarks after meeting him that all he could see him was genuine goodness and a desire to help others. The slitterhead personality that Yin Yue's personality is pushing down has very different desires. This makes the reveal that he had started feeding cultist slitterheads real brains, or had always been doing so murky, since either this is a desperate call to keep the peace or the slitterhead personality influencing him to get the neutral slitterheads back to a regular brain diet.
- White Hair, Black Heart: Not Yin Yue himself but his Split Personality.
- Ambiguous Situation: We don't get to see anything or hear anything outside Yin Yue's in the moment vocalizations in his Mental World, so it's unclear what The Master did to him, and if it had any connection to Yin Yue becoming a slitterhead, or if he was already and then abuse caused his dark side to trigger and mutilate The Master.
- Dead All Along: He's been dead since the game began, and Yin Yue is mentally blocking it out, while only he is allowed to go in his room. Needless to say, everyone takes it badly when the truth comes out.
- Eye Scream: If you look closely when his corpse is visible, you can make out that there's a hook in his right eye socket.
- Recruiting the Criminal: Did so with Yin Yue, who used to be a pickpocket.
- Sinister Minister: Comes off as this as we start learning more about him from glipses in Yin Yue's mind scape. He seemed downright abusive towards Yin Yue, though the details are unclear.
- Declaration of Protection: Sends Bik-yee away to fight Night Owl on first meeting, seeing him as a threat to Echoes of Love and, by extension, her. It's the first tell that he's a slitterhead that genuinely wants to be human, and is the closest to doing it.
- Go Mad from the Revelation: Does not take finding Bik-yee's brain in a bin well.
- Nerd Glasses: Wears a pair to symbolize what an awkward dork he can be. He ever still wears them when in slitterhead form.
- Power Incontinence: By the end of the Echoes of Love story arc, Tommy manages to protect Bik-yee from other slitterhead members, but loses control in a fight with Night Owl and starts to die - only for his instincts to kick in and assmilate Bik-yee, creating a confused new slitterhead that has both their personalities and memories. The worst part is he's screaming at her to run and save herself, even with his last breath.
- Predator Turned Protector: Tommy is very protective of Bik-yee, and is a brain hungry slitterhead trying to go against his natural instincts.
- Star-Crossed Lovers: Him and Bik-yee get is rough in this story, partly due to Tommy being a slitterhead, while the rest is blamed on Night Owl's actions making a bad situation worse, and that causing Yin Yue to lose control to his Split Personality.
- Tragic Monster: Poor, poor Tommy. He's one of the most sympathetic characters in the whole game, yet his true nature as a slitterhead ends up having him effectively kill his love Bik-yee, the two becoming a confused and frightened new slitterhead. Even before this fate, he had to find Bik-yee's brain in a tub, and realized he was secretly being fed real brains at some point.
- Brain in a Jar: Or rather, in a bin, as Tommy discovers in one loop and takes very badly.
- Innocent Bystander: She's just a kind hearted cultist trying to live as close to a normal life she can with her slitterhead boyfriend. It makes her grisly deaths quite tragic, especially when she gets absorbed by a panicking Tommy and the two become a confused monster.
- Star-Crossed Lovers: With Tommy, a slitterhead with a human soul, as he says. The two love each other dearly, but things don't go well for them at all. If there's any silver lining, it's their ultimate fate at least has them together, if in a twisted way as a deeply confused slitterhead with both their memories.
- Stuffed into the Fridge: Played With. Yes, really. How, you may ask? Simple. She is somehow still able to speak when Tommy finds her brain in a bin - and that's not even getting into the little body growing off it. Her final fate is also tragic, but involved Tommy's death and some sort of bizarre mind fusion and isn't simply a death for his character development.
- Tempting Fate: Tommy gives her a cute clover earring and is delighted to see her wearing it at one point. That earring is how he identifies her brain later.
Others

- Deadpan Snarker: A subtle example, but she makes a lot of loving little jabs at Alex's tough guy persona and obsessions. The fact he never seems to get mad at her says a lot about how close they are, despite how distant he tends to be.
- Dreaming of Things to Come: Foreshadows what her ultimate fate will be when recounting her nightmares.
- Innocent Bystander: Mostly out of the loop of Alex's monster hunting activities (she teases him about it once, suggesting she doesn't believe the creatures are real). It was probably a means to protect her, and it doesn't work once White Suit decides to screw with him.
- Morality Chain: Acts as this for Alex, reeling in his obsession as the one thing he has left in his life he cares for, even if he's too busy brooding to express it. When White Suit kills her and they takes her form to mess with Alex, it doesn't take long before he goes off the deep end.
- Rooftop Confrontation: If the visions during the second encounter with White Suit are correct, she died after he stabbed her and threw her off the roof she was on the edge of, and then ate her brain sometimes between or after.
- Shout-Out: A pretty clear reference to another nurse named Lisa from the director's first directed game, Silent Hill 1. Even doubles as Foreshadowing as she meets a similar grim fate.
- Stuffed into the Fridge: Her primary role in the story is to be killed by White Suit to drive Alex mad. Unlike most examples of this trope, though, Lisa still has presence in the story beyond a man being sad about her because White Suit primarily appears in her guise from then on, and Lisa's actress gets a lot more to do as a result.
- Targeted to Hurt the Hero: She ends up being killed by White Suit in order to drive Alex into grief and rage filled insanity.

- Bring It Back Alive: They're seen capturing some of Echoes of Love's neutral slitterheads alive. Turns out the higher ups aim to use some slitterheads as research subjects, which ends up leading to Night Owl's bad future.
- Creature-Hunter Organization: Not why they were founded, but what they became as they realized the slitterheads and the Hyoki are related to bizarre timeline issues they were finding.
- Elite Mooks: Below revealed slitterheads in human bodies but above the other creatures slitterheads use. Shielded agents are a problem that require some aggro and body switching work, while the ones that use jammers make it harder for Night Owl to make use of other bodies. They also can't be possessed unless you brought along Blake with his unique passive unlocked that allows for their posession.
- Fantastic Racism: They deal with the slitterheads, yes, but they treat neutral slitterheads offering no resistance the same way any other - violently.
- Revealing Continuity Lapse: The entire reason S.P.E.U exists is because researches became aware of the continuity of the timeline not adding up entirely in a few subtle ways, often in just weather readings. They eventually pieced together slitterheads had something to do with it and formed a combat organization to capture and study them and Night Owl.
- Suspiciously Prescient Planning: Night Owl is thrown completely off by not only them being aware of him, but having equipment for dealing with both him and slitterheads.
- Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Looking through Night Owl's memories suggests they were responsible for an event that lead to the bad future caused by study of the slitterheads. Duncan Dursley was the head researcher for the experiment in question, sharing the same name as the time travel device he'd make in the future, but a term from his records are official terms used by S.P.E.U, mainly "Category M," their term for slitterhead. This might explain Night Owl having a freak out when encountering them raiding Echoes of Love members, somewhat remembering this as what lead to the calamity.
A supposed savior from Night Owl's bad future, who lied to survivors about traveling to another universe when he was actually doing a time travel gambit (or possible sabotage).
- Alliterative Name: Duncan Dursley
- Ambiguous Situation: It's not clear what his real goal is since he lied about using time travel. It's not even clear if he died or not, since his body was never found - and that's not even getting into the implication that he might have traveled to the future from the past (or simply lived through that initial time travel accident into the bad future).
- Civilization Destroyer: His work is what ends up destroying the age of humanity and ushers in the time of slitterheads. Unclear if that was intentional or not.
- Doomsday Device: His time travel machines end up what creates the slitterheads and dooms humanity in the bad future.
- The Faceless: We never physically run into him, his existence is only conveyed by Night Owl's text only memories.
- Greater-Scope Villain: Night Owl seems to believe that his experiments were ultimately to make the slitterheads - he notably refers to DD's action as his plan after reading the S.P.E.U report. Of course, we don't have enough information to know for sure.
- Messianic Archetype: Very much so, though how good his intentions were are never made clear.
- Only Known by Their Nickname: Everyone just called him DD. This might have been his initials, as Night Owl discovers he may have been a researcher named Duncan Dursley.
- Small Role, Big Impact: He only gets mentioned in Night Owl's memories, and even then, you have to decode the future language that obfuscates some names and concepts. He also disappears fairly quickly in those future events. However, his time travel shenanigans create the literal machinery that sets the plot in motion.
- You Already Changed the Past: Assuming that DD was trying to fix things in the future, he was doomed to fail because he was in a Stable Time Loop that was created by his future self sending information beings to the past - made possible by his past self making the exact same machine to allow passage of those beings.
