- Jack of All Trades: She isn't centered around pure melee or pure ranged styles and her starter kits contain one of each.
The Ronin
A samurai without a master. His special ability is Push, which allows him to push an enemy in front of him as far as possible, dealing collision damage if he hits another enemy.
- The Big Guy: He has bigger frame than others and is strong enough to push enemies into each other. Rei The Ruthless outright calls him a "big target".
- Punched Across the Room: Pushed, rather, but his special ability hurls enemies until they hit someone or there's nowhere else to go.
- Super-Strength: He can push humans into each other with enough force to hurt and even kill.
- You Killed My Father: His father, Takeda, was killed by his advisor Ieyasu. Since then he harbored hatred to Shogun and all his subjects.
The Shadow
A mysterious cloaked figure. His special ability is Phase, which allows him to pass through one or multiple enemies (as long as they stand close to each other).
- Ambiguously Human: While other warriors are simply trained martial artists, this character seems to be a shadow made flesh, especially considering he can literally phase through humans. Fumiko and Sato's banter implies he is an undead, just like Fumiko and the striders.Fumiko (when facing the Shadow): You are... one of us?Sato (when facing the Shadow): Act 1: A shadow from the past.
- Flash Step: How he moves around. It also allows him to phase through enemies.
- Mechanically Unusual Fighter: He can move for as many free tiles as he can while other characters take one step a time.
The Jujitsuka
A practitioner of Jujitsu. Her special ability is Throw, which allows her to throw an enemy behind her as far as possible.

- Bare-Fisted Monk: Whereas other heroes utilize various blades or ranged weapons, Jujitsuka's initial set is armed with Dragon Punch and Scar Strike, coming at the foes with her fists and wits alone.
- Counter-Attack: Her second set comes with the Sai tile, which does double damage against enemies prepared to attack.
- Fastball Special: She can pick up enemies standing behind her and throw them forward.
- It's the Journey That Counts: Has this belief.
- Waif-Fu: She's much smaller than the imposing Ronin, yet is fully capable of flinging enemies much larger than her into each other, to the point of actually damaging them.
The Chain Master
A one-eyed, chain-bound warrior. His special ability is Swap Toss, which allows him to swap the contents of tile behind and in front of him.
- Chained by Fashion: He is wrapped in chains, but they are not for show, as there is a deadly weapon on one of it's ends.
- Eyepatch of Power: His second prominent attribute is an eyepatch.
- Irony: He is mentioned to talk very little, but he speaks a Pre-Asskicking One-Liner before fighting the Corrupted Soul, whereas the Shadow instead says nothing.
- Obfuscating Disability: The Mentor suspected his eyepatch-covered eye was perfectly fine.
Shopkeepers
Owners of several shops willing to assist you.- Colour-Coded for Your Convenience: On the map, they are marked in according to their occupation: Warring Shop is red, Guard Shop is Blue, Dancer Shop is Green and Combo Shop is Yellow. The Astronomer hosts a unique shop at Moonlit Port that can sell skills of all categories as well as couple unique ones.
- Dungeon Shop: They set up their shops before majority of locations filled with battles in effort to help you.
- Money Sink: After you buy all tiles and fully upgrade all shops, Moonlit Port shop is the only place in the game where you can spend skulls.
- Smurfette Principle: Dancer Shop shopkeeper is the only woman.
Villains
A villainous army controlling Japan. Enemies
A versatile army serving the Shogun.

- The Brute: Guardians are tough hulking warriors.
- Came Back Wrong: Striders are fallen warriors of past, resurrected as shadowy aggressive ghosts.
- Damage-Increasing Debuff: Wardens can curse you to take double damage from next attack.

- Death from Above: Yumi Snipers bombard you with arrows from the sky.
- Ditto Fighter: Kabukais don't have their own attacks. Instead, they randomly copy your attacks currently not in attack queue.
- The Dreaded: Grapplers have a fearsome reputation due to their mysterious origins and attacking style.
- Elite Mook: Day 2 onwards, Elite version of enemies (dubbed The Elite Guard) can appear, with extra health, added effect and colour scheme corresponding to that effect (Wardens and Shielders can't have elite versions due to incompatible effects):
- Double-Striker: Dark red colour and aura, attacks twice.
- Quick: Yellow colour and aura, doesn't spend extra turn between loading and attacking.
- Heavy: Grey colour and aura, can't be moved or swapped with.
- Reactive Shield: Blue colour and aura, gains shield when damaged.
- Corrupted: Pink colour and corrupted energy aura, spawns Corrupted Progeny on death. Exclusive to Day 7.
- Enemy Summoner: Wardens can summon Blight Chargers, undead versions of Spike Chargers.
- Fragile Speedster:
- Spike Chargers attack by charging at you in spiked armour and will charge as far as possible. They only have one health to compensate.
- Shinobi are more fragile relative to late game enemies (four health to most having five), but can act similar to Quick Elites, able to load an attack and be ready to execute it immediately.
- Friendly Fire: Enemies can hurt and kill each other if they stand in path of attacks. In fact, it's encouraged to utilize this alongside your attacks and even nets an achievement for enough times during a run.
- Giant Mook: Guardians are gigantic tough warriors that relentlessly advance to you.
- Glass Cannon: Twin Tachis have one health less than Ashigarus, but strike two tiles (in front and behind them) instead of one.
- Godzilla Threshold: Corrupted Progenies are absolutely dangerous and volatile results of experiments. It's stated that actually using them means Shogun is desperate to stop the heroes through any means.
- The Goomba: Ashigarus are simple samurais with one melee attack and are the first enemies you meet.
- Living Shadow: Shadow Chargers are mysterious shadow soldiers that obey without question.
- Long-Range Fighter: Ashigaru Archers, Yumi Sniper and Shinobis attack from afar.
- Malevolent Masked Men: Most of them wear masks.
- Red and Black and Evil All Over: They are clad in black-and-red armour and serve the villainous Shogun.
- Support Party Member:
- Wardens can only summon Blight Chargers or Curse you, causing to take double damage from next attack. Their only true attack is a death explosion.
- Shielders cast shields that protect their allies from one instance of damage. The only other move is applying shield to themselves when there are no other enemies without it.
- Yank Into Melee: Grapplers attack by hooking the target to them and then stabbing them with a sword.
Bosses
Prominent antagonists and leaders of the army. General
- Bling of War: They wear gold-and-black armour.
- Boss Banter: They talk to player characters before fighting them. This can range from Pre-Asskicking One-Liner to lore drops to melancholic musings.
- Flunky Boss: Each boss can summon enemies for support. The Twins and Shogun's second phase are an exception.
- King Mook: With few exceptions, they are stronger versions of common enemies.
- Theme Naming: Though with few odd ones out, most bosses are named "(Name) The (Title)".
- Red and Black and Evil All Over: Corrupted Bosses, appearing Day 4 onwards, have this colour scheme.
Daisuke The Dasher

"I bring a message. Ah, it's for me... I must stop you!"
A trusted messenger of Shogun long before he even rose to position. He fights you in Bamboo Grove.- Dash Attack: Can dash to hero to inflict damage, either by itself or with a follow-up of a melee attack.
- Lightning Bruiser: He can Dash like Spike Chargers and attack with swords.
- Multi-Melee Master: Has Swirl in his arsenal, a dual sword strike.
- Starter Villain: He is the first boss you face in the game and, while still not too easy, is just a messenger with minimal combat training.
- Wake-Up Call Boss: Seeing as you meet him in the first region of the game, he only has a few common attacks. That doesn't mean he is completely easy, however, and gives the taste of bosses that follow.
Rei The Relentless

"Every punch carries a lesson... though most are about pain."
A master of punching desiring more fights. She fights you as an alternative boss of Bamboo Grove after you beat Shogun once.- Bad Boss: She treats her minions as expendable projectiles and doesn't think twice about using them as these.
- Blood Knight: She is giddy about finding new opponents or simply something to punch the life out of.
- Dash Attack: Can Dash just like Daisuke. Unlike him, she can dash both back and forward.
- Dark Action Girl: Evil, bloodthirsty female warrior with penchant for punching.
- Fastball Special: Thanks to Dragon Punch, she can use allies she summons as projectiles to do collision damage with.
- Punched Across the Room: Her Dragon Punches, while not too strong, have huge knockback and can inflict collision damage if allowed.
- Wake-Up Call Boss: She is worthy equal to Daisuke with Dragon Punches and Dashing.
Iwao The Impaler

"The heavens have spoken, you must die!"
A cruel warrior of mystical fervour. He fights you in Whispering Caves.- Badass Preacher: He is as zealous as he is strong.
- Dishing Out Dirt: He can summon sharp rocks from the ground.
- The Leader: Yari Masters are stated to train under him. They even first appear in the same location as he does.
- Meaningful Name: He isn't Impaler for nothing - either his Yari or rocks will leave a hole in you if you're not careful.
- Mighty Glacier: He doesn't have mobility skills, but all his attacks hit multiple tiles.
- Multi-Melee Master: His kit includes Swirl as final component to multi-hit attacks.
Baru The Barricader

"Your defense is laughable."
A famous engineer. He fights you in Hibiku Wastelands.- Badass Bookworm: He is an engineer, but is more than capable of fighting.
- Death from Above: Like Yumi Snipers, he can attack with volleys of arrows from the sky.
- Friendly Enemy: Played for Laughs in one of his pre-combat phrases: he advises you to always watch out for Snipers, before realizing he is your enemy and wondering why would he tell you this.
- Meaningful Name: He can actually build barricades that protect him from attacks.
- Punched Across the Room: He reserves a Dragon Punch in case you corner him.
- Small Role, Big Impact: He seems like a simple if famous engineer, until he reveals in one of his banters he built a mysterious shrine underneath Shogun's Castle that comes into play during Day .
The Twins

"Two souls..."

"...One oath."
Two warrior brothers always at each other's side. They fight you in Moonlit Port.- Badass Normal: Compared to majority of other bosses, they don't have any supernatural aid, just sheer brute strength. Averted with their Corrupted form as they gain ability to manipulate corrupted energy.
- The Big Guy: They are bigger in stature and build than previous bosses. Instead of relying on magic or traps, they prefer to trap you between them and pummel you with coordinated melee attacks.
- Deal with the Devil: When one of the brothers fell sick, the other pleaded their allegience to Shogun in exchange for the cure. Some suspect that Shogun deliberately created the illness and brothers themselves can admit they know it was him, but by that point they are already bound to serve him.
- Disk-One Final Boss: They are the final bosses of the demo, and in full game the bosses of the location you are guaranteed to visit. Beating them opens the second part of the run with bigger choice of location to visit.
- The Dividual: They look exactly the same and are never seen without each other. They even have a shared health bar.
- Dual Boss: They fight you together, each with a same set of attacks. In fact, their battle style is trapping you between them and beating the life out of you.
- Even Evil Has Loved Ones: They greatly love each other, evidenced by one brother ready to do anything to cure the other when he fell sick.
- Lightning Bruiser: They have a set of heavy melee attacks, but should you escape their surrounding, they can dash behind you to trap you again.
The Statue

"...Help..."
A general who was cursed to be bound to the stone statue. He fights you at the Spirit Gateway.- And I Must Scream: The general who became The Statue was cursed to have his soul sealed within the stone. He can't move, but he is still concious, can speak in small sentences, can feel boredom, anguish for his clan and even attack. Some of his pre-combat phrases are him outright begging the heroes to kill him and The Twins outright call his fate a grim one.
- Flunky Boss: An interesting case. Rather than summoning enemies himself, he fights alongside a Summoner, another living statue whose job is exactly that.
- Mighty Glacier: He can't move, but he has a huge variety of possible attacks (three of which are ranged) and he stacks up three different attacks before actually making his move, meaning he can hit hard if you're not careful.
- Stationary Boss: Being a statue, he cannot move at all. This is compensated by him having a ton of attacks he executes in sets of three, as well as Summoner who calls enemies as support.
- Taken for Granite: He is the soul of once revered general trapped in a statue.
- Yank Into Melee: His arsenal contains a Hook that he can use to reel you in before unleashing hell. It's one of the reasons killing the Summoner is a bad idea.
Kowa The Coward

"Fear is the only wise counsel."
A cowardly, short-statured warrior who serves Shogun out of fear. He fights you at the Hot Springs.- Ambiguously Human: He looks like either a monkey tied to a pole or a human whose legs were replaced by said pole, but neither is ever clarified. He can still speak, though.
- Dirty Coward: He serves Shogun out of fear and his "fighting" style is running away, shielding himself, smoke-bombing and constantly summoning allies to fight for him.
- Flunky Boss: Instead of having a move dedicated to summoning enemies, he passively does it every few turns by ringing a bell.
- Irony: He is a human turned scarecrow, yet is the one filled with fear.
- Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: He can shield himself to block one instance of damage.
- Smoke Out: He can use smoke bomb to trade places with you for quick escape.
Fumiko The Fallen
A resurrected warrior from the past. She fights you at the Forsaken Grounds.
- Came Back Wrong: Like Striders, she came back as a villainous skeletal ghost.
- Damage-Increasing Debuff: Like Wardens, she can Curse you to take double damage from next hit.
- Dark Action Girl: A villainous female spirit that can bring pain.
- Flash Step: Her Dash passive allows her to move like this instead of one step at a time.
- Lady of War: Graceful and more than combat-capable.
- Multi-Melee Master: Can use Swirl no worse than other bosses.
Sato The Stagemaster
Once a renowned actor, now a shadow of his former self. He fights you at the Theatre Of Illusions.
- Art Attacker: He weaponizes theatre performance by advancing between acts that force you to fight sets of enemies between fights with him.
- Easy Level Trick: Outside his Acts, his only way of attacking you is via stealing your moves. Because the enemy AI will attempt to attack you if you're out of range, it's possible to have him copy a move which does not hit at point blank range (for example, the Shadow Kama, which only hits exactly the second tile in front) then shove and corner him at the edge, where he cannot escape and will never attack you, leading to an easy kill.
- Hoist by His Own Petard: Can inflict this on you if he steals your attack and then kills you with it.
- Master Actor: He once was Shogun's favorite actor. Now he is shadow of his former self.
- Mirror Boss: An almost literal case, since he fights purely with your moves instead of his own, and uses Copycat Mirror to steal them.
- Puzzle Boss: His main gimmick is Acts, where you must defeat specific waves of enemies to be able to attack him again. He also copies attacks not in your queue, meaning you have to choose an approach to avoid your attacks turned against you.
Hideyoshi The Cunning
Once a humble warrior, he became famous for unorthodox tactics. He fights you at the Hideyoshi's Keep.
- Apologetic Attacker: Downplayed. Hideyoshi will occasionally apologize to Wanderer at the beginning of the battle with her.Hideyoshi (when facing the Wanderer): I'm sorry for Kumori, Wanderer.
- Co-Dragons: Shares the position of Daimyo with Nobunaga and Ieyasu, being the second-highest ranked general of Shogun.
- Ironic Name: Despite his moniker, he is stated to be surprisingly gullible.
- Lightning Bruiser: He is constantly moving and repositioning himself while striking with swords or bombs.
- Rags to Riches: He was a low-rank warrior, but quickly rose in ranks thanks to his ingenious tactics.
- The Strategist: He is this for the Shogun. His boss fight has him utilize four different three-tile combo strategies against you.
- Throw Down the Bomblet: He can leave explosive that damage in an area.
Nobunaga The Wicked
A cruel and enlightened sage. He fights you at the Nobunaga's Fortress.
- Badass Preacher: He can bring the pain as much as he can deliver pre-combat wisdom.
- Boss-Arena Idiocy: Nobunaga has reverence to the light... which is his very weakness. His boss arena has multiple light beams that render him vulnerable.
- Co-Dragons: Shares the position of Daimyo with Hideyoshi and Ieyasu, being the second-highest ranked general of Shogun.
- Glamour Failure: He seems like a humanoid figure in a robe, but the light exposes a fleshy mess underneath that robe.
- High Priest: He is this in Shogun's army, having achieved enlightenment like no other.
- Puzzle Boss: He might seem simple with attacks you have already seen, but he is only vulnerable when exposed to the light.
Ieyasu The Patient
A traitor who took his chance after waiting for many years. He fights you at the Ieyasu's Garden.
- Co-Dragons: Shares the position of Daimyo with Nobunaga and Hideyoshi, being the second-highest ranked general of Shogun.
- Companion Cube: He harbors an unusual fondness to Swapper, a mechanical creature that fights alongside him.
- Dash Attack: Can dash like quite a few bosses. He always uses it in conjunction with Blade Of Patience.
- Gathering Steam: He isn't Patient for nothing. His Blade Of Patience gains more damage the longer it's not used.
- Mighty Glacier: He has a Blade Of Patience that increases in damage the longer it's held in queue. Add to that a mysterious mechanical creature that swaps positions with him, and you can have a powerful warrior that waits for long and then attacks swiftly and for a ton of damage.
- Real Men Wear Pink: He has his own garden he takes care of. In fact, it's where he resides whenever you confront him.
- Swap Teleportation: The Swapper constantly changes places with him, allowing for sudden strikes or quick getaways.
