Rae The Doe
The main character. A doe with anxiety. Her full first name is Rachel.
Mimi the Skunk
A punk skunk, and Rae's girlfriend. Her full first name is Miriam.
- Closet Geek: Initially tries to downplay her interest in anime due to wanting to maintain her punk image, but is also very insistent that Rae experiences anime "properly" once she shows interest in it.
- Four-Temperament Ensemble: "The Skunk Sisters" arc reveals that her siblings are a prep, a goth, and a jock, leaving Mimi desperately trying to deny that she's the "nerd" in the final part.
- Theme Naming: She has a twin sister named Fifi (Josephine), and the "Skunk Sisters" arc reveals that she has two other sisters, Vivi and Gigi (Gianna).
Lottie
A possum. Briefly dated Rae before hooking up with Cybil.
- Relationship Upgrade:
- Officially hooks up with Cybil in the 100th comic, after some previous strips had her worrying about whether they were actually dating.
- A story arc in 2022 centers around her and Cybil's marriage.
Cybil
A moth. Briefly dated Rae before hooking up with Lottie.
- Commonality Connection: She and Lottie initially hooked up because their diets consist of discarded items; Cybil eats old scarves, and Lottie eats trash.
Pascal
A bat, and Rae's current roommate.
- Small Name, Big Ego: Tends to think highly of himself; after the comic was syndicated, he lets himself be distracted from the revelation that he's actually a fictional character by the opportunity to tell an audience about himself.
Sawyer
Pascal's nonbinary squirrel partner, met during the Halloween party in "Fawn of the Dead".
- Mentor in Queerness: In "The Time Skip", Remy goes to them for advice upon realizing they also identify as nonbinary.
Jersey Devil (J.D.)
The goat-eating cryptid. Originally appearing in a Christmas storyline to try and become more popular than Santa Claus, he ends up repeatedly bumping into the others due to them all living in New Jersey.
- Carnivore Confusion: A story arc about him trying to find love starts with things going badly due to his habit of eating goats...while trying to date a goat.
- Fallen Angel: The 2024 Christmas arc has him admit that he used to be the Jersey Angel, until he bet the title while gambling and his pair of dice lost.
Death
A skeletal cat in a black hood that guides the deceased to the afterlife. Once accidentally reaped Rae the Doe's soul due to misreading a to-do list.

Rae the Dog
A dog with the same name as the main character
- Back from the Dead: The "Rae the Doe VII: Remake" seventh anniversary storyline ends with the comic's creator Olive Brinkler returning her to life in the restored canon, solely because it was annoying to keep track of an obscure character's backstory after literal years.
- The Bus Came Back: First appears to avert the One-Steve Limit, and also because she was supposed to be reaped by Death after eating chocolate, the mix-up causing the "Rae the Doe is Dead" plot. However, she appears again in "Fawn of the Dead", as her spirit has a bit of a grudge over Rae the Doe not remaining dead in their place, and later in "Rae the Doe VII: Remake", as one of the rulers of New New Jersey alongside Ray the Dog.
Remy
Rae and Mimi's adopted Turkey child in the future depicted in "The Time Skip". Identifies as non-binary after growing up a bit and talking with Sawyer about their feelings.
- Portmanteau: Their name takes the "Re" sound from Rae, and the "my" from Mimi.
Siobhan
A sentient snowbird who originally appeared in an animated Christmas special. After learning from Santa's reindeer how to avoid melting to death, she's since contributed to numerous Christmas story arcs.
- Snowlems: She's a Type 1, friendly "Frosty the Snowman"-type that's on good terms with the main cast.
Fifi
Mimi's slightly older twin.
- Evil Twin: Mimi refers to Fifi as hers. In the arc she debuts in, she attempts to sue Mimi for "copyright infringement" due to their shared appearance.
- I Am Very British: Although born in America, she lives in Britain and frequently peppers British slang (and things she just thinks are British slang, such as "who-do-you-knows" instead of "rumors") into her speech to sound more posh.
