Characters

    Protagonists

Rivel Arday

  • The Archmage: Rivel Arday, the main protagonist, is a sufficiently powerful magic-user that the strategy of the opposition is to avoid him until they can harness the magic of the Lord of the Wood.
  • Famed in Story: The protagonist, Rivel Arday, is well-known, and the enemy have a healthy respect of his abilities as a mage. In fact, even after they've gotten the drop on him by going after Laska instead, Jeana is doubtful that they could do anything to make him stay dead.
  • Hero Protagonist: He is The Archmage who is destined to pursue the murderers of a count and fight a rebel army seeking to take over the kingdom.
  • Older Than They Look: The protagonist, Rivel Arday, looks like a fairly young man, but as The Archmage, he's actually at least a hundred years old. Some people believe he's immortal.

Laska

Characters in Gyromancer

  • Back from the Dead: Deno kills Laska, but she doesn't stay dead for much longer than is necessary for Rivel to see her corpse. She's brought back by the Lord of the Wood.
  • Bare Midriffs Are Feminine: Her top bares part of her belly and is the male Rivel's female companion.
  • Forest Ranger: Laska Terrado, who is assigned to help the mage Rivel track down a group of rogue knights in Aldemona Wood.

    Bosses

Jeana

  • Upgraded Boss: After being defeated in stage 2, Jeana reappears as a boss three stages later. Her abilities in the latter fight are all upgraded versions of those she used in the former (Severance and Deadly Lance deal more damage and have the same extra functions as Disrupt and Piercing Lance; Triumph raises her Might and Armor like War Cry does, but by 2 instead of 1).

Deno

  • Attack Reflector: Deno's Plunder ability, in his second fight, locks one of your attack gems and transfers it to him.
  • "Get Back Here!" Boss: In stage 4, Deno is chasing after and attempting to kill Aiju, while being himself chased by Laska (whom you're controlling this time in place of Rivel). After you catch up with him and engage in battle, when his Flee ability is fully charged, he'll disengage from battle and resume chasing Aiju; you must then continue chasing him while not allowing Aiju to be killed.
  • Heads I Win, Tails You Lose: After trouncing Deno with the giant monster of your choice, he proceeds to kill Laska anyway (she gets better) and make his escape.
  • Upgraded Boss: Deno appears as a boss in both stages 4 and 8. In the latter fight, he keeps Provoke, has upgraded Browbeat to Flourish (which deals more damage and otherwise functions the same) and replaced Flee with a completely new ability (since this time, he's not a "Get Back Here!" Boss but is fighting to the death).
  • Would Hit a Girl: After being defeated, he does not take much time to kill Laska.

Wolflord

  • Counter-Attack: The Wolflord's Suppression comes into play by replacing an enemy attack gem; the ability will be wasted if there are none when it comes off cooldown.
  • Heal Thyself: The Wolflord' third ability, Mend Flesh, simply restores a fixed number of HP.
  • Recurring Boss: The Wolflord is the boss of both stage 7 and the optional Challenger's Door. Unlike most examples of recurring bosses, he keeps the same moveset.

Qraist Kingsley

  • Body Horror: When Qraist claims the Jewel of Aldemona Wood, it mutates him into a twisted behemoth of flesh.
  • Healing Factor: Qraist can use Groundswell to raise his vitality in his first fight.
  • Magic Knight: Qraist Kingsley, leader of the Temperence rebel knights, is quite a skilled mage, which is noted as being unusual for a knight. Magic is actually central to his plans, but he needs more power - that, not flight from the king's authority, is his main reason for being in Aldemona Wood.
  • Recurring Boss: After being fought as the stage 10 boss, Qraist will be back for a rematch by clearing the next stage for a second time. His level has been raised from 42 to 50, and two of his abilities (other than Hammerfall) have been replaced.
  • Spam Attack: Scream, used by Qraist in his first fight, creates three attack gems all at once, all of which are locked.
  • True Final Boss: When returning to Galia after defeating Everett (which doesn't unlock any new stages, but one might notice that the last award for the final stage is to defeat a 'certain enemy'), you'll find the stage significantly expanded compared to the first visit. Clear all beast lairs and Qraist will spawn at the centre for a rematch.

Everett

  • Final Boss: Everett is the boss of the final level in the game.
  • Interface Screw: Everett's second ability (called Mesmerize or Edge of Panic depending on form) causes you to twist anticlockwise until it activates again.
  • One-Winged Angel: Everett transforms into a monstrous form after having been defeated for the first time. In the second fight, he has more HP and replaces Soul Slave with Rift (his other abilities, though renamed, function the same).
  • Power Nullifier: Soul Slave, used by Everett in his first fight, automatically targets one of your attack gems and turns it into a useless stone, in addition to lowering Might and Armor.

Beasts

    Standard Beasts
  • Super Mode: Breakthrough, which can be used once enough puzzle points have been accumulated since the last Breakthrough, temporarily transforms your standard beasts (the five playable bosses are not affected) into ultimate forms that last for only one battle.

Wyrm (Red Wyrm, Lava Wyrm, Wyvern, Brass Wyrm)

  • Glass Cannon: Wyrms are capable of enormous amounts of damage, but have some of the least HP on the roster. They tend to underperform in longer battles where even a few enemy attacks slipping through will knock them out.
  • Playing with Fire: Wyrms' attacks are all fire- and lava-themed.
  • Spam Attack: All of the Wyrm's abilities (except the Red Wyrm's Kindle) create attack gems (three in case of Fire Breath/Megaflare) and recharge fairly quickly. Each gem doesn't deal a lot of damage; the Wyrm relies on setting up multi-hit rushes, especially with the Fever Pitch ability (available when upgraded to Wyvern), which sets off all of its attack gems.

Bockle (Whim Bockle, Hex Bockle, Gremlin, Wendigo)

  • Random Number God: Two of the Bockle family's attacks incorporate the randomness factor. Blaster/Detonator places one or three explosions anywhere on the board, while Camouflage and Confusion change beast affinity (the former for the Bockle itself only, the latter also for its opponent), but it's also random, so it's hard to strategise around them.

Aevis (Frost Aevis, Platinum Aevis, Vulture, Garutman)

  • An Ice Person: The Aevis conjures up blizzards, with abilities named Whiteout/Avalanche and Frostbite/Chilblains.

Spider (Webspinner, Huntsman Spider, Goliath, Juggernaut)

  • Giant Spider: Spider beasts are significantly bigger than normal spiders.
  • Random Number God: The Juggernaut's third ability is Bind, which locks all enemy attack gems. If you can activate Roaming Hunt (which destroys all locked gems) in time, this is perfect; otherwise, with all those locked gems on the grid, you'll be in a world of hurt.
  • This Looks Like a Job for Aquaman!: The Goliath's Roaming Hunt destroys all locks when activated, making it quite effective against beasts that employ locks, but otherwise, its third ability Entangle, which creates a lock, is more of a liability.

Arum (Green Arum, Ancient Arum, Colossal Watcher, Alraune)

  • Death of a Thousand Cuts: In addition to high HP, the Arum family has Poison Mist, which decreases foes' vitality (causing their HP to slowly trickle down), and their signature attack, Mold, deals pathetic damage but spawns one gem for every negative vitality point the enemy has. Using an Arum, you must have patience to wait for the negative vitality to stack up before finishing the foe off with a large number of Mold gems. Fighting against Arums you should go for a speedy finish, or use beasts that can recover from negative vitality.
  • Healing Factor: The basic Green Arum can use Chlorophyll to raise its own vitality (the Ancient Arum replaces it with Leaf Purge).
  • Poisonous Person: The Arum releases venomous clouds with its second ability Poison Mist (the Alraune replaces it with Deadly Thorns, which is twice as effective), wearing down the enemy's vitality.
  • Spam Attack: Mold spawns one attack gem for every negative vitality point the enemy has, making it especially strong in long fights in conjunction with Poison Mist, which reduces enemy vitality by one, and even moreso in case of the ultimate Alraune form, which upgrades Poison Mist to Deadly Thorns, doubling its power.

Cait Sith (Cait Sith, Puca, Grimalkin, Kikimora)

  • Power Copying: All beasts in the Cait Sith family can use Mimic, which creates a gem of the opponent's first ability. It gives you access to powerful and normally inaccessible moves like the Lifetaker's Soulsteal or boss abilities.
  • Symmetric Effect: The basic Cait Sith's Trick-or-Treat changes the opponent's auras to be the same as the user's.

Beetle (Power Beetle, Spear Beetle, Phalanx, Hecatoncheir)

  • Counter-Attack: The Phalanx and Hecatoncheir's Soaring Punch comes into play by replacing an enemy attack gem; the ability will be wasted if there are none when it comes off cooldown.

Garmr (Arc Garmr, Thunder Garmr, Sol Volk, Cerberus)

  • Attack Backfire: Any enemy gems destroyed by Countervolt activate for you, and this can contribute to Rush attacks.
  • Shock and Awe: The Garmr family attacks with lightning.

Ant (Drone Ant, Warrior Ant, Dark Hunter, Manticore)

  • Acid Attack: The basic Ants can use Acid Rain to lower the opponent's Armor. The Manticore upgrades it with Aqua Regia, which is twice as effective.
  • Degraded Boss: The Daemon Bug, which looks exactly like and has the same stats and abilities as a Drone Ant, is the boss of the tutorial before actual Drone Ants first appear as regular enemies in the second stage.

Gnat (Stinger Gnat, Needle Gnat, Yowie, Beelzebub)

  • Attack Reflector: The Yowie and Beelzebub's Steal ability locks an enemy gem and transfers it to the Yowie.
  • Awesome, but Impractical: The Yowie and Beelzebub's Steal can, well, steal an enemy gem for yourself in addition to locking it. While incredibly annoying in the hands of the AI, you can't make use of it (even if it does allow you to use powerful boss-only abilities) that well, since the gem is locked.
  • Spam Attack: The Beelzebub's Quillstorm creates three attack gems all at once. Like the weaker versions used by the non-ultimate forms, these gems are all locked, making this ability very powerful in the AI's hands but not so much in yours.

Rex (Gastrosaur, Edomasaur, Grendel, Fafnir)

  • T. Rexpy: This family is named Rex and its members all appropriately resemble large theropods.
  • Use Your Head: The Gastrosaur and Edomasaur can use an attack called Head Bash.

Gigas (Stone Gigas, Mythril Gigas, Talos, Dullahan)

  • Degraded Boss: The Titan, which looks exactly like a Stone Gigas but has a different moveset, is the boss of the tutorial before actual Stone Gigas first appear as regular enemies in the second stage.
  • Mighty Glacier: The Gigas family has huge numbers of HP and relies on a small number of slow-charging but very strong attack gems.
  • Power Nullifier: The Talos' Petromagick skill automatically targets an enemy attack gem and turns it into a useless stone.
  • Power-Up Letdown: The Breakthrough form of the Talos, Dullahan, is rarely worth it. It replaces the Talos' Petromagick (which can render an enemy attack gem, no matter where, useless) with Great Wall, which creates 3 stones and increases Armor greatly—the latter is simply not worth it compared to how the stones hinder your play.
  • Warm-Up Boss: The Titan, technically the first boss in the game, is in practice not really different from mundane beasts and can be dispatched of without much effort.

Toad (Gigantoad, Bubble Toad, Bunyip, Leviathan)

  • Making a Splash: The Toads' signature move is to spew forth bubbles to attack with Bubble Launch/Bubble Cluster.
  • Symmetric Effect: The Bubble Toad and its upgrades' Maelstrom adjusts all auras, regardless of negative or positive, on both the Toad and its opponent, by one towards zero. This can greatly weaken auras created by the enemy and slowly nullify elemental disadvantages, but also means that when fighting against red or yellow beasts (which are weak against the Toad's blue affinity), Toads will gradually nullify their own advantage and the enemy's disadvantage.

Tortoise (Aqua Turtle, Wave Turtle, Aspidochelon, Behemoth)

  • Stone Wall: The Tortoise isn't going to defeat enemy beasts quickly, but has a lot of HP and does well in long battles with Aquabunker, which boosts both Might and Armor at the same time (especially in the ultimate Behemoth form, where it's upgraded to Aquafortress, which is twice as effective).

    Playable Boss Beasts
  • Defeat Means Playable: The Gyro Codes that unlock the Motu, Resheph, Nahar, Elder Dragon and Dragon Lich are all located behind the respective beast, which needs to be defeated before you can unlock them.
  • Super Boss: Found in the bonus stages The Four and Dragon's Haven, these bosses have some of the highest levels in the game (54 and 58) and have to be defeated before you can unlock them. That being said, they're still one step below the true bosses of these levels, the Scion and Dragon Lord.

Motu

  • Counter-Attack: The Motu's Incinerate comes into play by replacing an enemy attack gem; the ability will be wasted if there are none when it comes off cooldown.
  • Mighty Glacier: The Motu relies on a small number of attacks that recharge slowly and hit really hard (among abilities available to you, Incinerate is one of the two that deal the most damage, tied with Ruination).
  • Playing with Fire: The Motu is a red-coloured beast whose abilities are all fire-themed.

Resheph

  • Glass Cannon: The Resheph doesn't have a lot of HP, but its Grand Cross hits hard and it can also use Spark Sphere to weaken the enemy's Might and Armor.
  • Shock and Awe: The Resheph is said to command the powers of a storm.
  • Spam Attack: The Resheph's Lightning hits like a wet noodle, but creates three gems at once and always activates when a battle begins.

Nahar

Elder Dragon

  • Spam Attack: The Elder Dragon's Sonic Tail creates five attack gems when it activates.
  • Time Abyss: The Elder Dragon's description describes that it's lived for aeons beyond reckoning.

Dragon Lich

  • Dracolich: The Dragon Lich is said to cling to life even as its flesh has rotten away.
  • Poisonous Person: The Dragon Lich's third ability is Toxic Breath, which weakens all of the enemy's auras.

    Non-Playable Beasts

Centipede

  • Sand Worm: The Centipede is much bigger than real life ones and is described to dig its way through the earth. Its skillset revolves around turning gems into stones and then destroying them.

Mantis Devil

  • Cannibalism Superpower: In stage 6, the Mantis Devil starts off at level 5, but with every Paleofungus it eats (which it is able to do despite the Paleofungi being level 50), it gains 10 levels, up to 55.
  • Helpful Mook: In the first half of stage 6, the level 50 Paleofungi that block your way are too strong for your beasts to tackle. Instead, you have to open barriers for the Mantis Devil, which will kill the Paleofungi for you. Unlike the Paleofungi, the Mantis Devil will eventually move out of the way, allowing you to proceed to the end.

Paleofungus

  • Chest Monster: Paleofungi appear as monsters-in-a-box in stages 4 and 7. Their only ability is Hypha, which increases their vitality and creates three stones, so they can't deal damage to your beast, but if you lack the means to clear stones, they can clog up the grid and force you to quit (which also reduces your beast's HP to 0).
  • Degraded Boss: Zigzagged. Paleofungi first appear in stage 6, but you are supposed to let a wild Mantis Devil kill them instead of fighting them directly. A single Paleofungus (which must be fought this time) is subsequently the boss of stage 9, and finally in The Four they become normal enemies.
  • Giant Space Flea from Nowhere: A Paleofungus, seemingly just a normal beast, appears as the boss the end of stage 9, at a point where all previous bosses (since stage 2) have been characters with some role in the story. Rivel describes the creature as a simple roadblock.
  • Healing Factor: Hypha greatly increases the Paleofungus' vitality.
  • Heal Thyself: The Paleofungus' second ability, Restore, simply restores a fixed number of HP.

Soulshaver

  • Death of a Thousand Cuts: Soulshavers are the only beasts that normally use no attack gems whatsoever, relying instead on the passive abilities Impede and Thwart to reduce your beast's attack and vitality, as well as spawning stones and locks to hinder you.
  • Interface Screw: The Soulshaver's Reverse causes you to twist anticlockwise until it activates again.

Paintrader

  • Turns Red: Payback, the Paintrader's only ability, deals damage depending on its missing HP, so it gets more dangerous as the Paintrader's HP depletes.

Lifetaker

  • One-Hit Kill: The Lifetaker's Soulsteal deals damage equal to its opponent's maximum HP. While you can never use Lifetakers (and for good reason), Soulsteal has a long countdown, so you'll have plenty of time and enough room for idle twists to get rid of it (or, if you're using a Garmr, trigger it yourself with Countervolt to knock the Lifetaker out in one hit).

Mightcrusher

  • Percent Damage Attack: The Mightcrusher's Compress cuts down its victim's health in half once activated.

    Other Bosses

Scion

  • Counter-Attack: The Scion's Overslay comes into play by replacing an enemy attack gem; the ability will be wasted if there are none when it comes off cooldown.
  • Spam Attack: The Scion's Final Push creates three gems at once and always activates when a battle begins. Unlike the Resheph's equivalent Lightning, it hits rather hard.
  • Super Boss: Not only does the Scion, boss of the bonus stage The Four, have a higher level (55) than any boss in the normal stages (50), it also possesses three of the nastiest attacks possessed by its fellow The Four bosses.

Dragon Lord

  • Super Boss: The Dragon Lord has the highest level of any enemy in the game (60) and has an incredibly powerful moveset (for an enemy).
  • Time Master: The Dragon Lord can use Time Twist to reduce the countdown on all ability gems to one (specifically Ultimatum, which clears most of the board and whose damage rating is 7/7).
