Get the tempo from an external MIDI clock

MainStage can receive tempo changes from incoming MIDI messages. You can have MainStage listen to incoming MIDI clock messages and adjust the concert tempo to the new tempo value.

Note: MainStage uses only the tempo information in the MIDI clock signal, ignoring any start/stop message. SPP (Song Position Pointer) information is also ignored because as a live performance application, MainStage has no timeline-based reference.

Get the tempo from incoming MIDI clock messages

In the MainStage Patch List, select the concert icon.
In the Concert Settings Inspector, click Timing > Tempo > From MIDI Clock.
From the Device pop-up menu, choose the MIDI device or port that sends the MIDI clock.

When From MIDI Clock is selected, the Tempo slider is dimmed and cannot be edited. However, selecting a patch from the Patch List changes the concert tempo if the patch contains a tempo value. Until MainStage receives a MIDI clock message, it uses the current concert tempo setting.

Incoming tempo values are displayed on the dimmed Tempo field, either as a fixed tempo or tempo changes, for example, when Logic Pro sends MIDI clock messages from its Tempo track to MainStage. If MainStage stops receiving MIDI clock messages, it continues to use the last received value for the tempo until you do one of the following:

Select a patch.
Set the tempo with its own tempo controls.
Tap a new tempo.
