View HDR media in the Motion canvas

In Motion, the way HDR images and projects are displayed in the canvas changes based on the capabilities of your display.

On a system with macOS Catalina or later, Motion applies tone mapping to HDR video, compressing bright image content and reducing the apparent dynamic range of the video to fit the viewable range of a display. You can turn off tone mapping if you wish.

On a system with a Pro Display XDR set to an HDR reference preset, tone mapping is automatically turned off, allowing Motion to provide the maximum luminance and color accuracy in HDR video playback. This makes the Pro Display XDR the ideal professional reference monitor for critical work such as creating HDR effects and content, or performing basic color correction. (If you’re viewing the Motion canvas on a display other than the Pro Display XDR, tone mapping is not automatically turned off.)

Important: Tone mapping is available only on systems running macOS Catalina or later.

Turn tone mapping on or off

  1. In Motion, open a wide-gamut HDR project.

  2. Choose View > Show HDR as Tone Mapped.

    A checkmark indicates tone mapping is turned on.

    When tone mapping is turned off on a system using an SDR display, the HDR image is clipped.

View HDR media on a Pro Display XDR in reference mode

If you have a Pro Display XDR connected to your computer, you can use it as a professional reference monitor to view HDR images.

  1. In Motion, open a wide-gamut HDR project.

  2. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Displays.

  3. In the Display pane, click the Presets pop-up menu, then choose a reference mode preset, such as HDR Video (P3-ST 2084).

    Motion automatically turns off tone mapping to provide the maximum color and brightness accuracy for HDR media playback on the Pro Display XDR.

View HDR media on an SDR display

To display HDR media in Motion on an SDR display, you can activate tone mapping. This setting can also be used with an HDR display that’s not capable of reproducing professional broadcast-quality images.

  1. In Motion, open a wide-gamut HDR project.

  2. Choose View, then make sure Show HDR as Tone Mapped is turned on (a checkmark appears next to it).

    Note: The Show HDR as Tone Mapped setting is available only if you’re working in an HDR project (the Color Processing parameter in the Properties Inspector is set to Wide Gamut HDR) and you’re working on a system with macOS Catalina or later.

    If you’re using a Pro Display XDR, Show HDR as Tone Mapped is automatically turned off when you choose a reference mode preset, such as HDR Video (P3-ST 2084), from the Presets list in the Display pane of macOS System Preferences.

Important: Only the Motion canvas is capable of displaying accurate HDR color on an HDR monitor. Other areas of the Motion application, such as color pickers, gradient editors, and image thumbnail previews (in the layers list or Inspector, for example) do not display HDR color.
