Bounce surround audio files in Logic Pro for Mac

You can bounce a surround or spatial audio mix directly to a surround, stereo (downmixed), or two-channel binaural format. Logic Pro for Mac can create a single interleaved file, or it can create multiple mono audio files—one per channel—when Split is chosen as the file type.

When multiple files are created, each file is identified by a unique filename extension, also referred to as a channel identifier.

Note: Use the Bounce Extensions settings pane to define filename extensions that will be added to the files resulting from a surround bounce. For more information, see Set I/O Assignments and bounce extensions for surround projects.

Perform a surround bounce to AIFF, Wave, or CAF

  1. In Logic Pro, do one of the following:

    • Choose File > Bounce > Project or Section (or use the Bounce key command, default assignment: Command-B).

    • Click the Bounce button at the bottom-right corner of the surround master channel strip.

      All outputs selected in the surround settings are bounced simultaneously.

  2. Select the Surround Bounce checkbox, below the Dithering pop-up menu in the Bounce window.

    Note: When the Surround Bounce checkbox is selected, the Add to Music checkbox is deselected.

  3. Select other bounce settings, as required.

  4. Click the Bounce button.

Note: You can’t use the Bounce command to create compressed surround files (AAC, MP3). If you click a compressed format checkbox, a dialog appears, indicating that a compressed surround (or split stereo) bounce is not possible.

Bounce a spatial audio mix to a binaural audio format

Bouncing a spatial audio mix to binaural creates a two-channel binaural audio file. When played back over headphones, it provides an immersive experience that’s similar to listening to the spatial audio mix on dedicated surround speakers.

  1. In the Dolby Atmos plug-in, click the Monitoring Format pop-up menu and choose a Binaural format.

  2. Do any of the following to open the Bounce window:

    • Choose File > Bounce > Project or Section (or use the Bounce key command, default assignment: Command-B).

    • Click the Bounce button at the bottom-right corner of the surround master channel strip.

  3. Configure the parameters in the Bounce window as follows:

    • Destination: PCM.

    • File Format: AIFF or WAVE.

    • Sample Rate: 48 kHz.

    • File Type: Interleaved.

    • Dithering: None.

    • Surround Bounce: Deselect the checkbox.

    • Add to Project: Select the checkbox if you want to add the binaural mix to your project.

      A two-channel binaural recording in a spatial audio mix needs to be placed on a stereo bed track, panned left and right.

    • Add to Music: Select the checkbox if you want to add the binaural mix to your Music app.

      The Add to Music checkbox will be accessible as soon as the Surround Bounce checkbox is deselected.

You can play back the two-channel binaural audio file the same way as a two-channel stereo audio file on any application that supports audio playback, such as the Music app. You can also upload the binaural audio file to social media sites so that listeners can experience your spatial audio mix on any headphones.

Perform a surround bounce to DVD-A

Logic Pro can burn a surround or spatial audio mix of the current project to a DVD-A (DVD-Audio) disc. This can be:

  • As many as six channels (5.1) at 24-bit depth, and 48 kHz sample rate

  • High definition stereo at 24-bit depth, and 192 kHz sample rate

  1. Do one of the following:

    • Choose File > Bounce > Project or Section (or use the Bounce key command, default assignment: Command-B).

    • Click the Bounce button at the bottom-right corner of the surround master channel strip.

      All outputs selected in the surround settings are bounced simultaneously.

  2. Select the Burn to CD / DVD checkbox in the Destination pane.

    A dialog indicates that you will need to change settings. Click Proceed.

  3. Click Burn to CD / DVD in the Destination pane, then choose DVD-A from the Mode pop-up menu.

  4. Choose other bounce settings, as required.

  5. Click Burn.

Tip: You can use a bounced file, especially the binaurally rendered files, to send a mix to clients for approval. You can also post the binaurally rendered Dolby Atmos mixes on YouTube or your website with a note that headphones are required to experience the immersive sound.
