Modify titles in iMovie on Mac

You can edit the text, font, size, color, and alignment for a title. You can also preview other title styles and change the title to a style you like better.

Note: You can’t change the styles of some animated titles and theme titles.

Change title text

  1. In the iMovie app on your Mac, double-click a title in the timeline.

    The playhead moves to the point where you clicked, and the title appears in the viewer. The first editable text field in the title is highlighted for editing.

  2. Type the new text.

    If there are more text fields, press the Tab key to highlight them, and type new text.

  3. When you’re finished, click the Apply button in the title controls.

Format a title

  1. In the iMovie app on your Mac, double-click a title in the timeline.

    The playhead moves to the point where you clicked, and the title appears in the viewer. The first editable text field in the title is highlighted for editing.

  2. Do any of the following:

    • Change the font: Click the Font pop-up menu and choose a font.

      To choose from additional fonts using the macOS Fonts window, choose Show Fonts (the last option in the Font pop-up menu).

    • Change the size of the text: Click the Size pop-up menu, to the right of the Font pop-up menu, and choose a font size.

    • Change the alignment of the text: Click one of the text alignment buttons.

    • Make the text bold, italic, or outlined: Click the button (labeled B, I, or O) for the style you want.

    • Change the color of the text: Click the color well, and select a color from the Colors window.

    Note: Some title styles have elements that can’t be changed; in these cases some title settings may be disabled.

  3. When you’re satisfied with the changes, click the Apply button in the title controls.

Change the style of a title

  1. In the iMovie app on your Mac, position the playhead on a title in the timeline.

    The title appears in the viewer.

  2. Select Titles above the browser.

  3. In the browser, double-click the new title you want to use.

    The new title replaces the old one, retaining the duration of the original title.

Adjust the duration of a title

You can change how long a title appears onscreen. You set the duration of each title individually.

In the iMovie app on your Mac, do one of the following:

  • Move your pointer to either edge of a title bar in the timeline, and then drag to lengthen or shorten the duration of the title.

  • Select a title in the timeline, click the Clip Information button in the adjustments bar, and type a duration in the Duration field.

Move a title

  • In the iMovie app on your Mac, drag a title bar in the timeline to wherever you want the title to appear in your movie.

    Note: If snapping is turned on (click the View menu and make sure Snapping has a checkmark next to it), the edges of the title align with clip and transition edges. As you drag, a vertical yellow line appears when either end of a title is aligned with either end of a video clip.
