Edit a Bass Player performance in Logic Pro for iPad

You can use the Bass Player in Logic Pro for iPad to quickly add authentic bass lines to your project.

In addition to the common settings available for all Session Players, the Bass Player comes with a set of specific settings. These settings are designed to control various aspects unique to a bass performance, such as chord tones, mute notes, and slides across the frets. They appear in the Session Player Editor when the Bass Player is the Session Player for the selected Session Player region.

The notes played by the Bass Player follow the global Chord track or region chords. See Chords and Session Players.

Some settings and menu options only appear in the editor for specific Bass Player styles.

Choose the melody notes

You can influence the notes played by the Bass Player, such as only the root note or more elaborate passages that also use other chord tones. The options available depend on the Bass Player style you have chosen. For example, with Retro Rock you can choose various grooves that are typical for rock music.

  • To change the melody: In the Logic Pro Session Player Editor, choose an option in the Melody pop-up menu.

Add octaves

  • In the Logic Pro Session Player Editor, choose an option in the Octaves pop-up menu to determine the frequency and probability that the Bass Player plays octave jumps.

Change the phrasing

You can change the maximum possible length of the notes to influence the phrasing of a Bass Player’s performance.

  • In the Logic Pro Session Player Editor, choose one of the options in the Phrasing pop-up menu.

Set the lowest note

You can set the lowest note the Bass Player can play. This can be useful if, for example, a chord tone is lower than E3 and you want to include it.

  • In the Logic Pro Session Player Editor, drag the Lowest Note slider.

    Tip: Setting the lowest note value to B0 emulates five-string bass performances.

Adjust muting

In the Logic Pro Session Player Editor, tap the Details button, then do any of the following:

  • To change how heavily notes are muted: Drag the Mute Offset value.

    Note: This is an offset for the Mute slider in the Studio Bass plug-in. If you’ve set this slider to zero, changing Mute Offset has no effect. See Studio Bass.

  • To have muted notes occur based on the surrounding notes: Tap the Dynamic Mute button to turn it on.

Edit percussive elements

In the Logic Pro Session Player Editor, tap the Details button, then do any of the following:

  • To adjust the number of percussive, unpitched notes: Drag the Dead Notes knob vertically.

  • To have the Bass Player hit the strings with an open palm on the second and fourth beats: Tap the Pickup Hits button to turn it on.

Adjust slides

  • To adjust how often the Bass Player slides between and before notes: In the Logic Pro Session Player Editor, tap the Details button, then drag the Slide Notes knob vertically.

Change the slide mode for electric or acoustic Bass Players

In Logic Pro, the electric and acoustic Bass Players use dedicated MIDI events and articulations to create slides in the Studio Bass plug-in. If you want to use the electric or acoustic Bass Players with another software instrument plug-in, you can use the slide mode to determine how slide information is sent.

  • In the Session Player Editor, in Details view for the Bass Player, tap the More button , then choose any of the following from the Slide Mode pop-up menu:

    • Pitch Bend: Pitch bend automation is used to generate slides. This is the default setting for the Synth Bass Players.

    • Studio Bass: Slides are generated using MIDI events and articulations. This is the default setting for the electric or acoustic Bass Players.

    • Overlap: Overlaps are created between notes where slides should occur. The receiving synth plays slides if it’s in mono legato mode and has a glide or portamento set.

Choose closer intervals for root notes

  • To have the Bass Player choose closer intervals for root notes when moving through the chord progression: In the Logic Pro Session Player Editor, tap the Details button, then tap the Align Root button to turn it on.

Adjust other performance settings for electric and acoustic Bass Players

In Logic Pro, some styles provide additional settings in Details view in the Session Player Editor to complement performance aspects and articulations typical of the playing style.

  • For Disco Slap:

    • To adjust the probability of buzz trills: Drag the Buzz Trills value.

  • For Modern R&B, Retro Rock, and Pop Songwriter:

    • To adjust the probability of double stops (two notes played together): Drag the Double Stops value.

  • For Modern R&B:

    • To shift the last sixteenth note in a beat back, giving a laid-back feeling: Drag the Laid Back value.

  • For Retro Rock and Roots Upright:

    • To adjust the probability of bends from minor thirds to major thirds when playing major chords and quarter-tone slides: Drag the Blue Notes value.

  • For Roots Upright:

    • To adjust the probability of percussive slaps: Tap the Slaps button to turn it on.
