Envelope

An envelope describes how a sound starts, continues, and ends. It determines how a parameter (such as amplitude or a cutoff frequency) changes (or modulates) over time.

Synthesizer envelopes usually consist of attack, decay, sustain, and release phases (abbreviated as ADSR).
