Open an existing project in Motion

You can open saved projects and templates from the Project Browser, the Motion File menu, or the Finder.

Open an existing project from the Project Browser

  1. In Motion, choose File > New from Project Browser (or press Option-Command-N) to open the Project Browser.

  2. In the sidebar, click Recent or a Final Cut template category (such as Final Cut Effects).

  3. In the middle of the Project Browser, select a project.

  4. Click Open. (If you selected a project in the Compositions category, click Open a Copy.)

    The project or template you selected opens.

Note: If the project you’re looking for doesn’t appear in the Project Browser, click Open Other in the bottom-right of the window, navigate to the Motion project file you want, then click Open.

Open an existing project from the File menu

  1. In Motion, do one of the following:

    • Choose File > Open (or press Command-O).

    • Choose File > New from Project Browser (or press Option-Command-N), then click Open Other.

  2. In the dialog that appears, navigate to the Motion project file you want, then click Open.

Open an existing project from the Finder

From the macOS Finder, do one of the following:

  • Double-click a Motion project file.

  • Drag a Motion project file onto the Motion application icon in the Applications folder or in the Dock (if you’ve placed a Motion application icon in the Dock).

  • Select a Motion project file, then choose File > Open (or press Command-O).

  • Control-click a Motion project file, then choose Open from the shortcut menu.

The project you selected opens in the Motion window.

Tip: You can search for Motion projects in the Finder using Spotlight. See Search for Motion projects from the Finder.

Open a recent project

In Motion, do either of the following:

  • Choose File > Open Recent, then choose a project from the submenu.

  • Choose File > New from Project Browser, click Recent in the sidebar, select a project from the center of the browser, then click Open.

Close a project

  • Click the close button in the top-left corner of the Motion window (or press Command-W).

Note: If you’re working on a Mac with Apple silicon and you open a Motion project containing media in video formats that are incompatible with Apple silicon, a dialog may appear instructing you to install Rosetta. After installing Rosetta, you must quit and reopen Motion. For more information, see the Apple support article about Rosetta.
