Accessibility features for vision on Mac

Your Mac comes with built-in tools to make it easier to see what’s on the screen — or have what’s on the screen spoken out loud.

To explore accessibility features for vision, choose Apple menu > System Settings, then click Accessibility in the sidebar. Vision features are at the top.

Read or listen to text in apps

Customise the text appearance for any app with Accessibility Reader. You can also listen to spoken text. Choose Apple menu > System Settings, then click Accessibility in the sidebar. Click Read & Speak, then turn on Accessibility Reader.

Control Mac with VoiceOver

Have the built-in screen reader speak what’s on the screen. Navigate your Mac with keyboard commands, trackpad gestures or a connected braille display. Choose Apple menu > System Settings, then click Accessibility in the sidebar. Click VoiceOver, then turn on VoiceOver.

Speak onscreen text

Even when VoiceOver is off, have your Mac read all text on the screen, text under the pointer, what you’re typing and more. Choose Apple menu > System Settings, then click Accessibility in the sidebar. Click Read & Speak, then choose a setting to turn on — like “Speak selection” or “Speak announcements”.

Hear descriptions of video

Get spoken descriptions of visual content in movies, TV shows and other media, when available. Choose Apple menu > System Settings, then click Accessibility in the sidebar. Click Audio Descriptions, then turn on “Play audio descriptions when available”.

Tip: With Siri and Dictation, you can complete common tasks and enter text using just your voice.

Zoom in on your surroundings

Zoom in on what’s around you and customise its appearance. You can also listen to text in your surroundings. Go to the Magnifier app on your Mac to get started.

Enlarge what you’re viewing — the entire screen or just a part of it. Set the zoom settings for secondary displays. Choose Apple menu > System Settings, then click Accessibility in the sidebar. Click Zoom, then choose a setting to turn on — like “Use keyboard shortcuts to zoom”.

View a larger version of text you’re typing or whatever is under the pointer — text you’re reading or icons in the user interface. Choose Apple menu > System Settings, then click Accessibility in the sidebar. Click Hover Text, then choose a setting to turn on — like Hover Text or Hover Colour.

Use a single slider to adjust the reading size for text across multiple apps and system features. Choose Apple menu > System Settings, then click Accessibility in the sidebar. Click Display, click “Text size”, then move the slider left or right.

Adjust the display colours

Differentiate content on the screen more easily by inverting colours, applying a colour filter and more. Choose Apple menu > System Settings, then click Accessibility in the sidebar. Click Display, then turn on a setting — like “Invert colours” or “Increase contrast”.

Make the pointer easier to see

Make it easier to find the pointer. Just change its size or colour, or quickly move it to make it bigger. Choose Apple menu > System Settings, then click Accessibility in the sidebar. Click Display, then change a setting — like “Pointer outline colour”.

Customise onscreen motion

Pause animated images and slow the motion of onscreen elements. Or dim your display when media you’re viewing depicts strobe lights or flashing lights. You can also use onscreen cues to help reduce motion sickness while riding in a vehicle. Choose Apple menu > System Settings, then click Accessibility in the sidebar. Click Motion, then turn on a setting — like “Reduce motion”.

Use Dark Mode

If you prefer light text on a dark background, choose a dark colour scheme for macOS. Choose Apple menu > System Settings, click Appearance in the sidebar, then click Dark.
