ARRAYTOTEXT

The ARRAYTOTEXT function returns the textual form of an array. It leaves existing text values as they are, and converts non-text values to text.

ARRAYTOTEXT(array, format)

array: A sequence of values to return as text.

format: An optional modal value specifying the format of the returned text. It can be one of two values:

concise (0 or omitted): The returned text is the same as the text in a cell that has formatting applied. This is useful when you want the returned text to be easy to read.

strict (1): The returned text includes escape characters and row delimiters in a string that can be parsed when entered into the formula bar. Encapsulates returned strings in quotation marks except for Booleans, Numbers and Errors.

Notes

  • If format is omitted, it is assumed to be 0.

  • Both the concise and strict formats return a list of values inside one cell.

  • Strict format uses commas to delineate columns, semicolons to delineate rows, there are no spaces between values, and the entire array is surrounded by curly brackets.

  • If format is anything other than 0 or 1, ARRAYTOTEXT returns an error.

Examples

Given the values 1, 2 and 3 are in cells A1:A3:

=ARRAYTOTEXT(A1:A3) returns “1, 2, 3”.

=ARRAYTOTEXT(A1:A3,1) returns “{1;2;3}”.
