Intro to editing value behaviors in Learn MIDI in Logic Pro for iPad

When you create a Learn MIDI assignment, Logic Pro for iPad automatically detects the type and behavior of the MIDI control, such as a fader that sends absolute MIDI messages, a relative encoder, or a button. However, you can change the behavior manually.

Some MIDI controllers use control change (CC) messages to encode relative rotary encoder data, or to represent buttons, which only have on and off states. In Learn MIDI, you can manually set the MIDI behavior of these kinds of controls to correct instances where Logic Pro has incorrectly detected the behavior.

You can also choose a different press-and-release behavior for button assignments. For example, in a scenario where you’re recording a Live Loops performance or automation for a region, you might want to unmute a track by releasing a button instead of pressing it.

Change the behavior for a MIDI hardware control

  1. In the Edit Assignment view of the Learn MIDI dialog, tap Value.

  2. Tap the MIDI Behavior pop-up menu. Different options appear depending on the type of MIDI control that’s assigned:

When you open a project with assignments made in Logic Pro for Mac, some assignments show a custom option in the MIDI and Logic Pro Behavior pop-up menus in Logic Pro for iPad.
