Set flex for audio regions in Logic Pro for iPad

Flex settings in the Region inspector work in combination with the flex settings in the Track inspector. Flex has to be turned on in the Track inspector for the two flex settings in the Region inspector (the Flex switch and the Smart Tempo pop-up menu) to have an effect. See Smart Tempo.

With the Flex switch in the Region inspector, you can turn flex on or off individually for any region on a flex-enabled track.

Important: With an audio Apple Loop selected, the Region inspector shows the Pitch Source pop-up menu instead of the Smart Tempo pop-up menu. This allows you to turn the Pitch Source parameter on or off (follow the project key signature) independently of turning the flex parameter on or off (follow the project tempo).

The Smart Tempo pop-up menu has four options that determine how the tempo of the selected audio file (file tempo) adapts to the project tempo. The Smart Tempo functionality uses the flex engine in Logic Pro, so the Flex switch has to be in the On position to shift the audio material of the region to the time grid in the Tracks area. See Intro to Smart Tempo.

  • Off: The region doesn't follow the project tempo, but you still can apply manual flex edits if the Flex switch is set to the On position. This is useful when the file tempo information is incorrect.

  • On: The region is flexed to adjust its tempo, matching the project tempo and following any tempo changes.

Note: Audio regions in imported projects that have been created in Logic Pro for Mac can contain manual flex edits, but these edits aren't visible in Logic Pro for iPad.

  • On + Align Bars: The region is flexed to adjust its tempo, matching the project tempo and following any tempo changes. Beat markers in the region (created by Smart Tempo during the tempo analysis) are used to conform the region to the project tempo at every downbeat (bar).

  • On + Align Bars and Beats: The region is flexed to adjust its tempo, matching the project tempo and following any tempo changes. Beat markers in the region (created by Smart Tempo during the tempo analysis) are used to conform the region to the project tempo at every beat.
