Keep your location history private in Maps

The Maps app uses information about your recent searches and locations to provide you with personalized services. You can keep your Maps information private by turning off certain features, removing specific locations, and clearing your searches and location history.

Note: Your significant locations and visited places are end-to-end encrypted and can’t be read by Apple. See the Apple Maps and Privacy website.

Turn Visited Places off

When you open the Maps app, you may be asked to turn on Visited Places. The Visited Places feature helps you keep track of places you’ve been, so you can easily revisit or share them later. You can turn off the feature at anytime in the Settings app .

IMPORTANT: Visited Places appear on all devices where you are signed in to the same Apple Account.

  1. Go to the Settings app on your iPhone.

  2. Tap Apps, then tap Maps.

  3. Tap Location, then turn off Visited Places.

Remove a visited place

You can delete a specific place from your visited places list.

  1. Go to the Maps app on your iPhone.

  2. Tap Places, then tap Visited Places.

  3. Next to a place, tap the More button (on the right side of the place card), then tap Remove.

Clear your visited places history

You can permanently remove your history of visited places from the Maps app. Any future visited places will still appear in your history.

  1. Go to the Maps app on your iPhone.

  2. Tap Places, then tap Visited Places.

  3. Scroll to the bottom, then tap Clear History.

Change how long Maps keeps your visited places

When you turn on Visited Places in Maps, you choose how long places are kept—3 months, 1 year, or Forever. You can change the duration at any time.

  1. Go to the Maps app on your iPhone.

  2. Tap Places, then tap Visited Places.

  3. Scroll to the bottom, tap Keep Visits, then choose a duration.

Clear your location history in Maps on iPhone

The Maps app uses information about your significant locations from Location Services to provide you with personalized services in Maps. You can delete your significant locations at any time.

  1. Go to the Settings app on your iPhone.

  2. Tap Privacy & Security, then tap Location Services.

  3. Tap System Services, then tap Significant Locations & Routes.

  4. Tap Clear History.

This action clears all your significant locations everywhere you’re signed in to the same Apple Account.

Clear recent searches in Maps on iPhone or iPad

  1. Go to the Maps app , then scroll down to Recents.

  2. Do one of the following:

    • Delete a single item: Tap the More button, then tap Clear.

    • Delete all recent: Tap Recents, then tap Clear.

Clear recent searches in Maps on Mac

  1. Go to the Maps app , then scroll to Recents in the sidebar.

  2. Below Recents, click Clear Recents.
