Export a still image to Pixelmator Pro

You can share a single frame from your Motion project directly to Pixelmator Pro. After you share it, the image automatically opens in Pixelmator Pro, letting you create a custom thumbnail or social media graphic, paint on the image, save a color adjustment as a custom LUT, and much more.

Important: Before you share an image from Motion to Pixelmator Pro, update to the latest version of each app and make sure that the apps are compatible. Both apps must be either part of Apple Creator Studio or one-time purchases.

Share a single frame to Pixelmator Pro

  1. In your Motion project, move the playhead to the frame to be shared, then do one of the following:

    • Choose File > Share > Send Frame to Pixelmator Pro.

    • On the right side of the toolbar, click Share, then choose Send Frame to Pixelmator Pro.

      Share button in the toolbar

Note: If you don’t see the Send Frame to Pixelmator Pro option, make sure the app is installed on your Mac.

  2. In the Info pane of the Send Frame to Pixelmator Pro window, view or modify the still-image attributes, such as the title and description.

  3. Click Settings at the top of the window, then choose your preferred export settings:

Settings pane of Send Frame to Pixelmator Pro window
    • Export: Choose an export file type, such as Photoshop File, PNG Image, or JPEG Image.

    • Scale image to preserve aspect ratio: Leave this checkbox selected if your project uses a nonsquare pixel format (such as 1440 x 1080) and you want to use the exported still image in Pixelmator Pro with the same nonsquare pixel properties.

    • Action: Leave this this pop-up menu set to Open in Pixelmator Pro.

    • Color Space: Choose the range of color used in the exported image. The default option (“Use canvas setting”) applies your project’s color space, but you can choose a different color space. See About color space.

    • Color Channels: Choose whether to output color channels (RGB) only, an alpha channel (transparency), or color channels plus an alpha channel.

Note: Not all file types in the Export pop-up menu support an embedded alpha channel. For file types that don’t support an alpha channel, no alpha channel is saved, regardless of the option you choose in this pop-up menu.

    • Export selected layer only: Select this checkbox to export a single frame of a single layer selected in the project. If no layer is selected, this option doesn’t appear.

  4. Click Render at the top of the window, then choose Motion-specific options, such as Motion Blur, Frame Blending, or Shadows.

    See Render settings.

  5. Click Next.

  6. Enter a name and choose a save location for the exported file, then click Save.

The image opens in Pixelmator Pro.
