External Instrument in Logic Pro for Mac

You can use the External Instrument plug-in, loaded on an instrument channel strip, to integrate your external MIDI sound modules (hardware devices or software MIDI apps on your computer) into your Logic Pro project. In the plug-in, you select the MIDI port and MIDI channel of your external MIDI module to send MIDI messages to that device to play it live, record, and play back MIDI regions on the corresponding instrument track. The same plug-in receives the audio signal from the MIDI sound module by choosing the audio input of your audio interface where the module’s audio outputs are connected. This way, you can process the audio signal from the sound module, using Logic Pro audio effect plug-ins on the instrument channel strip.

The track routed to an instrument channel strip that is being used for an external MIDI sound module behaves just like a standard software instrument track. This lets you record and play back MIDI regions on it, with the following benefits:

  • You can use the sounds and synthesis engine of your MIDI module with no overhead on the computer CPU—apart from effects used in the channel strip (or destination channels).

  • You can use insert and send effects. To use send effects, route the instrument channel strip to aux channel strips.

  • You can bounce external MIDI instrument parts, with or without effects, to an audio file in real time (bouncing cannot happen faster because MIDI hardware is involved). This makes the creation of a mix, including all internal and external devices and tracks, a one-step process.

Tip: To avoid constant repatching of devices, it is best to use an audio interface that supports multiple inputs and outputs.

Tip: When using multi-timbral MIDI sound sources, you can gain maximum flexibility with multiple External Instrument instances. In this situation, connect a separate audio output of the tone generator (if equipped with multiple outputs) to different inputs on your audio interface—each addressed by an individual External Instrument instance.

External Instrument parameters

  • MIDI Destination pop-up menu: Choose the MIDI port your external MIDI sound module is connected to.

  • MIDI Channel pop-up menu: Choose the MIDI channel your external MIDI sound module expects to receive MIDI messages from.

  • Audio Input pop-up menu: Choose the input channels of your audio device that the MIDI sound module is connected to.

  • Audio Input Volume slider and field: Adjust the signal strength of the external MIDI sound module on the audio input.

  • Auto-Compensate Latency checkbox: Select to automatically compensate for small timing differences between MIDI and audio playback.

    Playback of audio and MIDI data is pre-buffered when this feature is turned on, aligning audio and MIDI playback timing anomalies that can potentially occur with some audio and MIDI hardware combinations. Latency figures reported by connected audio and MIDI hardware are used to determine the buffer amount. In general, you should not need to turn on this feature.

  • Send Program Change checkbox: When selected, sends the MIDI program change and bank select message (set in the pop-up menus below the checkbox), and sends these messages when the project, patch, or preset is loaded.

    Note: Program/bank change messages are stored when you save a plug-in setting and are automatically sent when you load the setting.

  • Program pop-up menu: Choose a MIDI program change number.

  • Bank LSB pop-up menu: Choose a MIDI bank LSB (Least Significant Byte) value.

  • Bank MSB pop-up menu: Choose a MIDI bank MSB (Most Significant Byte) value.

    The Bank LSB and MSB messages can be combined to access presets (patches) in MIDI devices that offer more than 128 presets. Some devices only require the MSB message and a program change message to access presets above 128. Other devices may require the use of all three values. Consult the documentation for your device to determine the required values for these parameters.

Process external MIDI instruments with effects

  1. Connect the audio output (or output pair) of your MIDI sound module to an audio input (or input pair) of your audio interface.

    Note: These can be either analog or digital connections if your audio interface and MIDI sound generator are equipped with either or both.

  2. Connect the MIDI output of your MIDI sound module to your computer using a USB cable or connect to an audio interface. See Connect MIDI devices to use with Logic Pro for Mac.

  3. In Logic Pro, choose Track > New Tracks (or press Option-Command-N) to open the New Tracks dialog.

  4. In the New Tracks dialog, click the External MIDI button in the MIDI tile on the left, then click the Details disclosure triangle to show additional parameters.

  5. Click the Audio Input pop-up menu, then choose the audio inputs your MIDI sound module is connected to.

    Click the arrow button below the pop-up menu to open the Audio settings to choose the correct audio device if it isn’t selected yet.

  6. Click the MIDI Destination pop-up menu, then choose the MIDI port your MIDI sound module is connected to and the MIDI channel it expects to receive MIDI messages on.

  7. Click Create.

    A MIDI instrument track is created with the External Instrument plug-in loaded on the corresponding instrument channel strip. To load the External Instrument plug-in on an existing instrument channel strip, click its Instrument slot, then choose Utility > External Instrument.

  8. Insert any required audio effect plug-ins into the effect slots of the channel strip and choose a bus from the Send slot if you want to use send returns on an aux channel strip. See Route audio via send effects in Logic Pro for Mac.
