Import and export Terminal profiles on Mac

If you want to transfer Terminal profiles between computers, you can import and export them. The exported files end with a .terminal extension.

Open Terminal for me

Import a profile

  1. Go to the Terminal app on your Mac.

  2. Choose Terminal > Settings, then click Profiles.

  3. Do one of the following:

    • Click the Action pop-up menu, choose Import, select the file that contains the profile, then click Open.

    • Drag the file that contains the profile from the Finder to the profiles list.

Export a profile

  1. Go to the Terminal app on your Mac.

  2. Choose Terminal > Settings, then click Profiles.

  3. Do one of the following:

    • Select the profile you want to export, click the Action pop-up menu, choose Export, enter a name for the file, then click Save.

    • Drag a profile from the profiles list to the Finder.
