Controller assignments Expert view parameters in Logic Pro for Mac

This section outlines each parameter shown in the fields on the right side of the Controller Assignments window when in Expert view. See use controller assignments Expert view for how to turn on Expert view.

Controller Assignment parameters

  • Control Name field: Displays the name of the controller for supported devices, or “Learned” for unsupported devices. For more information, see Controller assignments Control Name and Label fields.

  • Label field: Displays characters that represent the label for the assignment on the control surface display. For more information, see Controller assignments Control Name and Label fields.

  • Flip Group field: Enter an integer value to define a flip group for the assignment. For more information, see Controller assignments Flip Group and Exclusive parameters.

  • Class pop-up menu: Choose the class of parameter (parameter type) you want to assign. For more information, see Controller assignments Class pop-up menu parameters.

    Note: Depending on the chosen class, different fields and pop-up menus for that class appear below the Class pop-up menu.

  • Parameter/Mode pop-up menu and field: Depending on your choice in the Class pop-up menu, you can choose from dozens of different parameters and modes. The options available change as different classes are selected.

  • Group/Track/Command/Key field pop-up menu: These options also change depending on your choice in the Class pop-up menu.

  • Bank Type pop-up menu: This pop-up menu determines the bank relationship of the assigned parameter. This can be as per the Group setting, By One, or By Bank.

MIDI input message parameters

The MIDI tab shows the following parameters. See Controller assignments Expert view MIDI parameters for details.

  • Input pop-up menu: Choose a MIDI input source (MIDI Port or Caps Lock Keyboard). This can be changed by incoming MIDI messages, shown in the Value Change field.

  • Value Change field: Displays incoming MIDI messages that cause a value change.

  • Lo7 Min/Max fields: Set the minimum and maximum for incoming values.

    • Only checkbox: Recognize only the minimum and maximum values and no values in between.

  • Format pop-up menu: Choose the format used to encode negative values.

  • Touch/Release field: Enter an integer value to force incoming MIDI messages to change the touch/release state of the selected parameter. This applies only to control surfaces with touch-sensitive controls.

OSC parameters

The OSC tab shows the following parameters. See Controller assignments OSC Message Paths.

  • Value field: Determine the message for sending the parameter value.

    Note: There is an exception to the normalized value rule: feedback for global and control surface group parameters is always sent non-normalized.

  • Touch/Release field: Choose from the following values: 1.0 indicates touched, and a value of 0.0 indicates released.

  • Label field: Displays the parameter name.

  • Value String field: Displays the current parameter value.

Game Controller parameter

You can connect a game controller to control different functions in Logic Pro. The Game Controller tab shows the following parameter:

  • Button field: Display or edit the name of the game controller button that’s assigned to a Logic Pro parameter.

Value parameters

The lower area shows the following parameters. See Controller assignments Expert view Value parameters for details.

  • Minimum and Maximum sliders and fields: Define how the incoming value is scaled to the destination parameter.

  • Multiply field: Enter a value to scale incoming MIDI values.

  • Mode pop-up menu: Choose the mode used by incoming values to modify the current parameter value.

  • Resolution field: Enter a resolution to specify whether you have finer or coarser control when changing a parameter value.

  • Use Global Resolution checkbox: Choose to use the global resolution, which is used by all relative assignments.

Feedback parameters

The Feedback area shows the following parameters:

  • Format pop-up menu: Choose the display format used for the parameter value shown on the control surface display, if applicable. The choices are:

    • None: No feedback is sent.

    • Single Dot/Line: LED rings: only one LED; LCDs: a single vertical line.

    • Left to Right Bar: A bar from the minimum to the current value.

    • Bar from Center: A bar from the center position to the current value.

    • Right to Left Bar: A bar from the current value to the maximum.

    • Q/Spread: Two equal bars from the center to the current value.

    • Ascending Bar: A bar from the bottom to the current value.

    • Descending Bar: A bar from the top to the current value.

    • Text Only: LED rings: no feedback; LCDs: no feedback as a graphics element.

    • Automatic: Depending on the currently assigned parameter, the most suitable feedback mode is used: Plug-in and Instrument parameters carry this information, Pan displays a single dot or line (Single Dot/Line), and all other parameters display a bar that runs from left to right (Left to Right Bar).

    Note: Feedback works for directly supported control surfaces, but not all settings are available for all controls. Feedback also works for Lua script-supported devices that provide a CoreMIDI input port. In this case, Lua script MIDI feedback processing is used, including optional label and value text feedback. For Lua script-supported devices that that provide CoreMIDI input and output ports, the input message is sent to the out port, with the value scaled to 0–127 as an absolute value. “Learned” controller and Smart Controls assignments are automatically turned on to provide feedback. It should be noted that feedback is not possible on IAC.

  • Text Feedback checkbox: Turn on to send a text representation of the current value to the control surface display. The control surface display capabilities determine the display position and number of characters used.

  • Local Feedback (Fader/Knob) checkbox: Turn on to stop feedback while the parameter is in Touch mode. This prevents motorized faders from fighting against user movements.
