Use presets from your Mac on your iPad

You can export custom tool presets that you create in Pixelmator Pro on Mac and then import them into Pixelmator Pro on iPad.

Importing and exporting presets varies between different tools, but the basic workflow is the same.

  1. In Pixelmator Pro on Mac, go to the Layers sidebar and select the layer that contains tool adjustments you want to save as a preset.

  2. In the Tools sidebar, select the tool that you used to make those adjustments.

  3. To export the adjustments as a preset, do one of the following (depending on the adjustment type):

    • Effects: At the top of the Effects pane, click the More button next to the pop-up menu, and choose Export. Select a location to save the .effects file, then click Export.

    • Layer styles: At the top of the Style pane, click the More button next to the pop-up menu, and choose Export. Select a location to save the .layerstyles file, then click Export.

    • Color Adjustments: At the top of the Color Adjustments pane, click the More button next to the pop-up menu, and choose Export. Select a location to save the .adjustments file, then click Export.

    • Brushes: Click the brushes pop-up menu at the top of the Paint pane, position the pointer over a brush collection (Basic, Pencils, and so on), then click the More button and choose Export. Select a location to save the .brushes file, then click Export.

    • Gradients: Click the gradient well at the top of the Gradient fill pane, then click the More button, and choose Export. Select a location to save the .gradients file, then click Export.

    • Shapes: Click the pop-up menu at the top of the Shape pane, position the pointer over a shape collection (Basic, Activities, and so on), then click the More button, and choose Export. Select a location to save the .shapes file, then click Export.

  4. On your Mac, share the presets file with your iPad using AirDrop or by saving it to your iCloud Drive.

  5. In Pixelmator Pro on iPad, import any of the following presets:

    • Effects: At the top of the Effects pane, tap Preset, touch and hold a preset collection name (Ethereal, Chroma, and so on), then choose Import. Select a .effects file, then tap Open.

    • Layer styles: At the top of the Style pane, tap Preset, touch and hold a preset collection name (Gradients, Vibrant Gradients, and so on), then choose Import. Select a .layerstyles file, then tap Open.

    • Color Adjustments: At the top of the Color Adjustments pane, tap Preset, touch and hold a preset collection name (Modern Films, Classic Films, and so on), then choose Import. Select a .adjustments file, then tap Open.

    • Brushes: Tap the Brushes button in the toolbar at the bottom, touch and hold a preset collection name (Basic, Pencils, and so on), then choose Import. Select a .brushes file, then tap Open.

    • Gradients: Tap the gradient well in the toolbar at the bottom, tap Preset, touch and hold a preset collection name (Vibrant, Coral, and so on), then choose Import. Choose a .gradients file.

    • Shapes: In the toolbar at the top of the Pixelmator Pro window, tap the Add button, then choose Shape. In the Shapes browser, touch and hold a preset collection name (Activities, Food, and so on), choose Import, select a .shapes file, then tap Open.

The preset collection is added to the library.
