Write in your journal on iPhone

The Journal app (iOS 17.2 or later) makes it easy to capture your thoughts on everyday moments and special events. You can add photos, videos, audio, and more to your entries. You can also get suggestions for topics to write about.

Create a journal entry

  1. Open the Journal app on your iPhone.

  2. Tap the Compose button.

  3. Tap New Entry, or choose a journaling suggestion or reflection prompt. (If you turned off Journaling Suggestions, you can just start writing.)

    Tip: To save a suggestion for later, touch and hold the suggestion, then tap Save Without Writing.

Use journaling suggestions

Journaling suggestions intelligently group outings, photos, workouts, and more to help you remember and reflect on your experiences.

  1. Open the Journal app on your iPhone.

  2. Tap the Compose button, then browse the recommended suggestions. Tap Recent to see suggestions sorted by time.

  3. To start a new entry with all the suggested attachments, tap the Write About This button at the bottom right corner of the suggestion. Or, to preview the attachments before creating the entry, tap the suggestion, then do any of the following:

    • Browse the attachments: Swipe through the attachments.

    • Change to the list view: To see the details for all attachments, tap the List View button.

    • Choose the attachments you want: Tap an attachment to select or deselect it.

  4. Tap Start Writing or Save Without Writing.

Tip: To delete a suggestion, touch and hold the suggestion, then tap Remove.

Add details to an entry

While writing an entry, you can do any of the following:

  • Change the date: Tap the More button, then choose a different date.

  • Get suggestions from your recent activities: Tap the Smart Suggestions button, tap Recent, then choose from your recent workouts, photos, media you’ve played, and more.

  • Add photos and videos from your library: Tap the Photos button, then choose the photos and videos you want to include.

  • Take a new photo or video: Tap the Camera button.

  • Record audio: Tap the Audio button.

  • Add a map location: Tap the Locations button, then enter a location or choose a suggested location. To adjust the location, tap the thumbnail, then tap the Edit button.

  • View an attachment in full screen: Tap the thumbnail.

  • Reorder attachments: Touch and hold a thumbnail, then drag it to a different position.

  • Remove an attachment: Tap the Delete button in the top right corner of the thumbnail.

  • Add a bookmark: Tap the Bookmark button so you’ll remember to return to the entry later.

Start a journal entry from another app

When you’re doing something in another app—such as listening to a song in the Music app or reading an article in the News app —you can quickly capture your thoughts in a new journal entry.

  1. In the app you’re using, tap the Share button or Share, then tap Journal. (If you don’t see Journal, you may need to add it to the sharing options.)

  2. Enter your thoughts, then tap Save.
