Add and download music on Mac

As soon as you subscribe to Apple Music, you can add songs, albums, playlists, and music videos from Apple Music to your music library, which is accessible from your Mac, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Apple TV 4K, or Android device whenever you’re signed in to Apple Music.

After you add music to your music library, you can download it to your computer or device to play at any time, even when you’re offline.

Note: Apple Music and Dolby Atmos aren’t available in all countries or regions. See the Apple Support article Availability of Apple Media Services.

Add music from Apple Music to your library

  1. Go to the Music app on your Mac.

  2. Search for the music you want to add to your library.

  3. Do one of the following:

    • Move the pointer over an item, then click the Add button.

    • Move the pointer over an item (such as a song or album), click the More button, then choose Add to Library.

    • Drag the item to the sidebar.

For example, when you drag a song, you can add it to the library or to a specific playlist.

Note: When you add an Apple Music playlist to your library, the songs in the playlist are updated whenever the owner updates them; however, the individual songs don’t appear in your list of songs.

If you don’t see these options, either you’re not signed in to your Apple Account, you haven’t subscribed to Apple Music, or the Sync Library option isn’t selected in Music settings: Choose Music > Settings, click General, make sure Sync Library is selected, then click OK.

Download music to your computer to listen offline

  1. Go to the Music app on your Mac.

  2. Click any option below Library in the sidebar. For example, click Songs to display all the songs in your library.

  3. To download music you’ve added to your music library to your computer, move the pointer over an item, then do one of the following:

    • Click the Download button.

    • Click the More button, then choose Download.

If the music you’re downloading is available in Dolby Atmos, the Dolby icon appears next to the item, and you can download it either in Dolby Atmos or in stereo. To download music in Dolby Atmos when available, choose Music > Settings, click General, then select the Download Dolby Atmos checkbox. See Listen to Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos.

Note: Music you download from Apple Music to your computer can’t be burned to a disc or transferred manually to a device, such as iPhone, iPad, or iPod. Music can only be downloaded to a device directly from Apple Music. See Intro to syncing your Mac and your devices.

When you purchase access to movies, TV shows, music, music videos, ebooks, audiobooks, or ringtones from Apple, you also have the option to permanently download these items to a compatible iPhone, iPad, Mac, or PC. Apple cannot revoke your downloaded content, and you can always access your downloaded content without an internet connection.
