Switch to the onscreen keyboard on iPad

You need to use the onscreen keyboard instead of an external keyboard to do things like type accented characters or use dictation.

Use the onscreen keyboard with Magic Keyboard for iPad or Smart Keyboard

To open the onscreen keyboard, touch and hold the button at the bottom right of the screen until the onscreen keyboard appears. (If you don’t see the button, tap the down arrow on the external keyboard.)

To hide the onscreen keyboard, tap the Hide Keyboard button.

Switch between Magic Keyboard and the onscreen keyboard

To use the onscreen keyboard, press the Eject key on the external keyboard. To hide the onscreen keyboard, press the Eject key again.
