Randomize a pattern or row in Logic Pro for Mac

In Step Sequencer in Logic Pro for Mac, you can randomize the active edit mode values for all steps in a row or subrow, or for all steps in the pattern. By randomizing a pattern or steps, you can quickly create different-sounding patterns.

You can use different randomize modes to adjust the type and level of randomization that occurs. Step Sequencer features three randomize modes: probability, offset, and range. The randomize modes available vary depending on the currently active edit mode.

Randomize step values in a pattern for the active edit mode

  • In Logic Pro, do one of the following:

    • Click the Randomize button  in the Step Sequencer menu bar.

    • Choose Functions > Randomize Current Edit Mode for Pattern from the Step Sequencer menu bar.

  • In Logic Pro, do one of the following:

    • Click the Randomize button  in a row header or subrow header.

    • Select a row, then choose Functions > Randomize Current Edit Mode for Selected Row from the Step Sequencer menu bar.

Set the probability

Probability is available for On/Off, Tie, and Skip. It determines the likelihood of step values being turned on or off, tied, or skipped.

  1. In Logic Pro, Control-click the Randomize button  in the pattern controls, row header, or subrow header.

    The Randomize dialog appears.

  2. In the Randomize dialog, set a value in the Probability field.

  3. Click outside the Randomize dialog to close it.

Set the offset or range

Offset and range are available for the edit modes Velocity / Value, Gate, Note, Octave, Loop, Chance, Offset, Step Rate, Skip, and Note Repeat.

When randomizing a pattern that contains both note rows and automation rows, you can randomize the velocity and value separately for the Velocity / Value edit mode. Additionally, you can choose to randomize all rows, only note rows, or only automation rows.

  1. In Logic Pro, Control-click the Randomize button  in the pattern controls, row header, or subrow header.

    The Randomize dialog appears.

  2. In the Randomize dialog, choose an option from the Mode pop-up menu and set the values. The choices are:

    • Offset: This mode randomizes relative to the existing value of a step, based on the strength of the offset. For example, if a step has a velocity of 64, and you set the offset to 50 percent, the offset can be up to 32 (50 percent of 64) both above and below 64. This means that the possible randomized values would be between 32 and 96. You set the offset amount in the Offset field.

    • Range: This mode randomizes between the lower and upper values of the edit mode. The lower and upper limits of the range vary depending on the active edit mode. For example, the range for velocity is 1–127, and for repeats it’s 1–16. You set the range in the Range fields.

  3. Set the values in either the Offset field or the Range field (depending on which mode you chose in step 2).

  4. Click outside the Randomize dialog to close it.
