Create playlists on iPhone

In the Music app , you can organize music into playlists.

Create playlists to organize your music

  1. To create a new playlist, tap Library, tap Playlists, then tap New Playlist.

  2. To more easily identify the playlist later, enter a name and description.

  3. To give your playlist cover art, tap the Camera button, then take a photo or choose an image from your photo library.

  4. Tap Create, then tap Add Music.

You can search for music, select music from your library, or choose songs listed at the bottom of the screen.

  5. Tap the Add button to add music to the playlist.

In iOS 17.1, the Music app suggests songs for any playlist you create. To add a suggested song to a playlist, swipe to the bottom of the screen, then tap the Add button next to the song. To refresh the list of suggestions, tap the Refresh button.

Tip: If you want to add songs to your library when you add them to a playlist, go to Settings  > Music, then turn on Add Playlist Songs.

Create collaborative playlists

In iOS 17.3, Apple Music subscribers can invite friends (who also have Apple Music subscriptions) to add, remove, and reorder songs in playlists they create.

  1. Tap a playlist, then tap the Add Collaborator button.

  2. To approve collaborators before they can join, turn on Approve Collaborators.

If you don’t turn on this option, anyone with the link can join the collaborative playlist.

  3. Tap Start Collaboration, then choose a sharing method, such as Messages or Mail, to send a link to the playlist.

The person who receives the link must tap Join Playlist to start collaborating.

Tip: If you want to add someone who is nearby, open the playlist, tap the Collaborators button, then tap QR Code. Others can join the playlist by using the camera on their device to scan the code displayed on your iPhone.

To stop collaborating on a playlist you created, tap the Collaborators button, then tap Stop. If you joined someone else’s playlist and want to leave it, tap the Collaborators button, then tap Leave.

Edit a playlist you created on iPhone

Tap the playlist, tap the More button, tap Edit, then do any of the following:

  • Add more songs: Tap Add Music, then choose music.

You can also touch and hold an item (song, album, playlist, or music video), tap Add to a Playlist, then choose a playlist.

  • Delete a song: Tap the Delete button, then tap Delete. Deleting a song from a playlist doesn’t delete it from your library.

  • Change the song order: Drag the Reorder button next to a song.

  • Edit cover art: Select from a variety of Apple templates to use as cover art.

Changes you make to your music library are updated across all your devices when Sync Library is turned on in Music settings. If you’re not an Apple Music subscriber, the changes appear in your music library the next time you sync with your computer.

Sort a playlist

  1. Tap a playlist, then tap the More button at the top right of the screen.

  2. Tap Sort By, then choose an option—Playlist Order, Title, Artist, Album, or Release Date.

Delete a playlist

Touch and hold the playlist, then tap Delete from Library.

You can also tap the playlist, tap the More button, then tap Delete from Library.
