Hide distractions when watching videos in Safari on Mac

You can use Viewer to fill the current window with the video you’re watching, showing playback controls but hiding the rest of the webpage. You can also move the video into Picture in Picture.

Open Safari for me

Watch a video in Viewer

  1. Go to the Safari app on your Mac.

  2. Go to a webpage that contains video, then begin playing the video.

  3. Click the Page menu button in the Smart Search field, then choose Video Viewer.

    Video Viewer appears only if the webpage has video that Viewer can show.

  4. To stop using Viewer, click the Page menu button in the Smart Search field, then choose Exit Video Viewer (or press Esc).

Move the video in Viewer to Picture in Picture

  1. Go to the Safari app on your Mac.

  2. While watching a video in Viewer, click the playback speed button in the playback controls, then choose Picture in Picture (or click another window).

  3. To stop using Picture in Picture, hold the pointer over the upper left corner of the window and click the Close button.
