Manage notifications from Mail on Mac

New message notifications from Mail appear in the top-right corner of the screen, where you can reply to a message, mark a message as read, or delete a message. You have the option to receive these notifications from only certain mailboxes. You can also change how notifications appear or turn them off altogether.

Change new message notifications

  1. Go to the Mail app on your Mac.

  2. Choose Mail > Settings, then click General.

  3. Do any of the following:

    • Change new message sound: Click the “New message sound” pop-up menu, then choose a sound.

    • Change the mailbox for new message notifications: Click the “New message notifications” pop-up menu, then choose a mailbox.

Change or turn off all notifications from Mail

  1. Go to the System Settings app on your Mac.

  2. Click Notifications in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)

  3. Go to Application Notifications, click Mail, then do any of the following:

    • Change notifications: Set options, such as the style of notifications, where to show them, and more. For more information about the options, click the Help button in the bottom-right corner.

    • Turn off all notifications from Mail: Turn Allow Notifications off.

Note: To display notifications from Mail when a Focus is on, you must allow the notifications to appear. See Set up a Focus.

Use Focus filters

You can add a Focus filter to specify which email accounts are visible in Mail when a Focus is on. You only receive notifications and see badge counts for the email accounts you choose to use during a particular Focus. For example, you can set a filter to show your work email account and its notifications when your Work Focus is on. See Set up a Focus.

Use Remind Me to come back to emails later

If you don’t have time to respond to an email right away, you can set a time and date to receive a reminder and move a message back to the top of your inbox.

  1. Go to the Mail app on your Mac.

  2. Select the message, swipe right with two fingers on your trackpad or Magic Mouse, then click Remind Me. You can also Control-click the message.

  3. Select one of the following options:

    • Remind Me in 1 Hour: Receive a reminder in one hour.

    • Remind Me Tonight: Receive a reminder at 9:00 p.m. (local time).

    • Remind Me Tomorrow: Receive a reminder at 8:00 a.m. (local time) the next day.

    • Remind Me Later: Select a custom date and time to receive a reminder.

    You receive a notification for emails you’ve set reminders for, and they move to the top of your inbox. They also appear in the Remind Me mailbox in the sidebar.

Mute or unmute conversations

  1. Go to the Mail app on your Mac.

  2. Select a conversation, then click Message.

  3. Do either of the following:

    • Mute a conversation: Click Mute.

      The mute icon the Mute button appears in the conversation’s messages in the message list.

      The conversation stays in your Inbox, but you aren’t alerted by a notification or sound when new messages in the conversation arrive.

    • Unmute a conversation: Click Unmute.

      The mute icon is removed from the messages in the conversation.
