Export a Magnetic Mask as a matte

After you use a Magnetic Mask to separate people or objects from the background, you can export the mask’s alpha channel as a matte for compositing in other apps.

  1. In the Layers list or Timeline in Motion, select an applied Magnetic Mask (or the layer it’s applied to).

  2. In the Layers list, deselect the checkbox of any layer that you don’t want to include in the exported alpha channel.

Note: Don’t deselect the checkbox of the Magnetic Mask object in the Layers list.

  3. Optional: To view the alpha channel, click the Show Result button in the Magnetic Mask Inspector, click the Channels pop-up menu (in the upper-right corner of the canvas), then choose Alpha.

    Share button in the toolbar
  4. On the right side of the toolbar, click Share, then choose Export Selection to Movie.

    Share button in the toolbar
  5. In the Settings pane of the Export Selection to Movie window, click the Video Codec pop-up menu, then choose a codec that supports alpha channels (such as Apple ProRes 4444).

  6. Click the Color Channels pop-up menu, choose Alpha (or Color + Alpha), then click Next.

For more information on export settings, see Share a selected object from your project as a movie file.

  7. Enter a name and choose a save location for the exported file, then click Save.

You can also export the mask’s matte as an image sequence. See Share your project as an image sequence.
