Work with GPUs in Motion

If you use an external graphics card (eGPU), you can choose whether to use your computer’s internal GPU or your eGPU when using Motion.

Use an eGPU with a second display

In Motion, do one of the following:

  • Choose Window > Show Canvas on Second Display.

  • Drag the Motion project window to the eGPU’s display.

Motion now uses the eGPU for graphics rendering during playback and for RAM preview rendering.

To switch back to your internal GPU, drag the project window back to your computer’s display.

Use an eGPU without a second display

  1. In the macOS Finder, select the Motion application, then choose File > Get Info (press Command-I).

  2. In the Motion Info window, select Prefer eGPU.

The Prefer eGPU checkbox appears only if you have an eGPU connected to your computer. See the Apple Support article Use an external graphics processor with your Mac.

GPU usage in Motion

If you have not selected Prefer eGPU in the Motion Info window (as described in the task above), the GPU used to render your project is also used to drive the display on which the canvas appears. Any additional GPUs that match the GPU that’s driving the display are also used (matching GPUs are identical internal models). If you have selected Prefer eGPU in the Motion Info window, only the eGPU is used, regardless of how many internal GPUs the system contains.

Although Motion does not use mismatched GPUs to render a single project, you can use mismatched GPUs to play back separate projects. For example, if you have one project open on your display (driven by your computer’s internal GPU) and another project open on a second display (driven by an eGPU), Motion uses the computer’s GPU to play back the first project and the eGPU to play back the second project.
