Use VoiceOver with Play Surfaces in Logic Pro for iPad

In Logic Pro for iPad, you can use the Direct Touch accessibility feature in the Play Surfaces area to play a software instrument. You can also change the size of the Play Surfaces area, start and stop recording, and adjust the value of knobs and sliders.

Open or close the Play Surfaces area

  1. Swipe repeatedly to the right in the view control bar until you hear “Play Surfaces Switch Button.”

    VoiceOver announces whether the button is on or off.

  2. Double-tap to open or close the Play Surfaces area.

Change the size of the Play Surfaces area

  1. In the Play Surfaces area, navigate to the resize handle.

  2. Do one of the following:

    • Change the size of the Play Surfaces area: Swipe up or down anywhere outside of the Play Surfaces area.

    • Change the size of the Play Surfaces area in smaller increments: Double-tap and hold anywhere outside of the Play Surfaces area until you hear three rising tones, then drag up or down.

    • Maximize the size of the Play Surfaces area: Double-tap.

Turn on Direct Touch

When the Direct Touch accessibility feature is on, you can interact with the Play Surface and side controls in real time, just as you would when VoiceOver is off.

  1. Navigate inside the Play Surfaces area until you hear the name of the Play Surface (for example, “Keyboard” or “Drum Pads”).

    If Direct Touch is off, the name of the Play Surface is followed by “Use the Rotor to Enable Direct Touch for This App.”

  2. Turn the VoiceOver rotor to Direct Touch, then swipe up or down until you hear “Direct Touch On for Logic Pro.”

Choose a different Play Surface

  1. In the Play Surfaces area, navigate to the Surface Types button, then double-tap.

    VoiceOver appends the name of the currently active Play Surface to the Surface Types button (for example, “Surface Types Keyboard”).

  2. Swipe left or right to navigate through the list of Play Surfaces, then double-tap to select a Play Surface.

Start and stop recording

You can use a VoiceOver gesture to start and stop recording on the currently selected track.

  1. In the Tracks area, move the playhead to where you want to start recording.

  2. Double-tap with two fingers to start recording.

  3. Double-tap with two fingers again to stop recording.

    Recording stops, and Logic Pro continues playing.
