Make tracks ready for recording in Logic Pro for Mac

You make a track ready for recording using the Record Enable button in the track header. Similar to corresponding buttons on a hardware multitrack recorder, Record Enable buttons have the following states:

  • Off (gray)

  • Record-ready (blinking red)

  • Recording (solid red)

  • Single track, ready to record (gray with red letter R; appears on the focused track if no tracks are manually record enabled)

When recording to a single track, select the track and engage Record mode (the R in the Record Enable button turns red. You don’t need to click the Record Enable button to record to a single track).

Note: By default, the focused track is ready to record. Using the Auto Record Enable setting, you can make all selected software instrument tracks record-ready. See Recording settings.

When recording to multiple tracks, click the Record Enable buttons on the tracks—you don’t need to select the tracks. Make sure each audio track has a different audio input selected. (For multiple software instrument tracks, MIDI input ports and channels can be the same or different.) If you have manually made some tracks record-ready, the R in the Record Enable button of the focused track doesn’t change color. If several tracks are assigned to the same channel strip, the new audio region is recorded to the focused track assigned to the channel strip. If none of the record-ready tracks are focused, the region is recorded to the first (uppermost) of the tracks. See Record to multiple audio tracks.

If the Record Enable button is not visible on an audio track’s track header, check the Input slot on its channel strip. If Input is set to No Input, the R button is hidden.

If you make multiple software instrument tracks ready to record, a new MIDI region is recorded on the focused MIDI track and the other record-ready MIDI tracks. See Record to multiple software instrument tracks.

Tip: You can record a single record-ready track (so that no other tracks are record-ready) by Option-clicking the track’s Record Enable button. You can change the status of all record-ready tracks to instead be not record-ready by Option-clicking any track whose Record Enable button is blinking red.

Make a single track ready for recording

  • In Logic Pro, select the single track, with no other tracks selected or record-ready.

Make multiple tracks ready for recording

  • In Logic Pro, click the Record Enable button in the track header of each track you want to record on.

You can also select one or more tracks with different inputs in the Tracks area, and use the Toggle Track Record Enable key command (default: Control-R) to make them for ready for recording.
