Guidelines for better Magnetic Masks

To get the best results when using a Magnetic Mask, consider the following suggestions:

  • If you’re applying a Magnetic Mask to a retimed clip, make sure to apply the retiming first, then add the Magnetic Mask. See Retime media in the Motion Timeline or Timing controls.

  • Avoid copying a layer that includes a Magnetic Mask to another project with a different frame rate.

  • For the best performance, use a Mac with Apple silicon when working with Magnetic Masks.

  • When the playhead is inside the play range and you start a Magnetic Mask analysis, the analysis is limited to the play range. If the playhead is positioned before the play range, the area between the start of the project and the In point is analyzed; if the playhead is positioned after the play range, the area between the Out point and the end of the project is analyzed.

  • To learn about how masks can interact, see Combine multiple masks.

  • If you include a Magnetic Mask in a Motion template (effect, transition, title, or generator) in Final Cut Pro, you can’t edit the mask in Final Cut Pro. To adjust the mask, control-click the template in the Final Cut Pro Effects browser, Transitions browser, Titles sidebar, or Generators sidebar, then choose “Open in Motion” from the shortcut menu.

Note: Before you modify a Final Cut Pro effect, transition, title, or generator in Motion, update to the latest version of each app, and make sure the apps are compatible. Both apps must be either part of Apple Creator Studio or one-time purchases.

About Magnetic Mask analysis files and project cache

When you perform a Magnetic Mask analysis, the analysis files are temporarily stored in your /Users/username/Movies/Motion Projects/Magnetic Mask Files folder. After you save a project that contains a Magnetic Mask, the project, any clips or images used in the project, and the Magnetic Mask analysis files are saved to a folder (in your chosen save location). When you quit Motion, the Magnetic Mask analysis files stored in your /Users/username/Movies/Motion Projects/Magnetic Mask Files folder are deleted.

Note: If you’re doing extensive work with the Magnetic Mask on high-resolution media, the analysis files may use a significant amount of storage.

Using Magnetic Masks in a project can increase system memory usage. You can reduce the percentage of your total system memory used by Motion in Cache settings.
