Create a password for a website or app on Mac

Your Mac can generate a password to use on a website or app.

Open Passwords for me

The main screen for the Passwords app, showing the types of passwords in the sidebar on the left (with All selected), a list of all password accounts in the middle (with Etsy selected), and the details of the Etsy account on the right.
  1. Go to the Passwords app on your Mac.

  2. Click All in the sidebar.

  3. Click the New Password button.

  4. Enter details about the website or app, and a user name for your account.

  5. Click the Password field, then choose Strong Password or Without Special Characters.

  6. Click Save.

You can also create a password when you sign up for services on websites and in apps. See Autofill your user name and password in Safari.

Note: If you use a third-party password manager, you can accept the strong passwords suggested by the password manager or enter your own. Your passwords are saved in the password manager. You can automatically fill in passwords from up to three password managers.
