Customise verbosity in VoiceOver on Mac

By default, VoiceOver provides a high level of detail to help new Mac and VoiceOver users.

Note: VO represents the VoiceOver modifier that you press with additional keys to enter VoiceOver commands. By default, you can press Control and Option together or just press Caps Lock.

  1. Open VoiceOver Utility (press VO-Fn-F8 when VoiceOver is on).

  2. Click the Verbosity category, then click Speech or Braille (if you use a refreshable braille display).

Note: To navigate the different tabs in Verbosity, press the Left Arrow or Right Arrow key after you hear “Verbosity” until you hear the setting you want to edit — like Speech or Braille.

  3. Choose a different default setting, and a verbosity level for specific controls, such as checkboxes or scroll areas.
