Sharing-only user preferences

If you’re an administrator of your Mac, you can reset the password and change the picture of a sharing-only user.

To view these preferences, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Users & Groups, then select a Sharing Only user on the left.

User picture

Click the user picture to edit it, then select a new picture.

  • Use a picture included with macOS: Click Defaults, then select a picture.

  • Take your picture using your Mac: Click Camera; when you’re ready, click Take Photo.

  • Use a picture from the Photos app: Click Photos. To see specific photos from a time, place, or album, click a disclosure triangle below photos, then select a group of photos. Select a picture, then click Next.

  • Use a picture from the Photo Booth app: Click Photo Booth to see pictures you’ve taken using your Mac and the Photo Booth app. Select a picture, then click Next.

Instead of clicking the picture, you can drag and drop an image file from the Finder onto the picture.

Reset Password

Click this button to change the sharing-only user’s password and password hint. To use the Password Assistant, click the key next to the Password field. For more information, see Tips for creating secure passwords.

Add and Remove

To add a new user or group, click the Add button , then enter the information for the new user or group. To delete a user or group, select it in the list, then click the Remove button . For more information, see Delete a user or group.

Lock

Locks or unlocks Users & Groups preferences. Click the lock icon to unlock it, then enter an administrator name and password.

To give a user permission to access your shared files or screen, you may need to change settings in the File Sharing, Screen Sharing, or Remote Management pane of Sharing preferences. For more information, see Use file sharing and Screen sharing overview.
