Shorten overlapping notes in the Piano Roll Editor in Logic Pro for iPad

In Logic Pro for iPad, when editing MIDI notes, you may end up with two notes of the same pitch, where the second note starts before the first has ended. During playback, the first note stops playing when it receives the Note Off command for the second note. You can fix those same-note overlaps, which are sometimes hard to see in the Piano Roll Editor, with the Remove Overlaps command.

The Remove Overlaps command can also be used when notes of different pitch overlap, for example, a melody line. This creates a legato playing style where each note ends when the following note begins.

Remove overlapping notes

  1. In Logic Pro, in the Piano Roll Editor menu bar, tap the Trim button .

  2. Tap the working area to deselect any selected notes, then touch and hold next to the overlapping notes and drag over to select both notes.

    You can also drag over a section of multiple notes to fix any occurring overlaps.

  3. Tap one of the selected notes to open its menu and choose Remove Overlaps.

    Any overlapping note will be shortened to end eight ticks before the following note.

When you use the command on multiple selected notes that appear to be part of a chord, a menu opens with three options:

  • Keep: All notes are kept.

  • Delete: Overlapping chord notes are deleted to keep a monophonic line.

  • Shorten: All overlapping chord notes are shortened to the beginning of the following note.
