Intro to Learn MIDI in Logic Pro for iPad
Assigning hardware controls to Logic Pro for iPad lets you use faders, knobs, switches, and other physical controls to remotely adjust functions and plug-in parameters in Logic Pro.
You create assignments using a manual process called Learn MIDI, in which MIDI messages sent from a controller are assigned to controls and parameters in Logic Pro. To use Learn MIDI, first connect a MIDI controller to your iPad. You can use any controller capable of generating MIDI messages. See Connect external devices.
The Learn MIDI dialog is where you create, delete, and edit assignments. Each assignment is displayed in a control row, along with additional information about the assignment. For more information, see Create an assignment, Delete a Learn MIDI assignment, and Intro to editing an assignment.
When the Learn MIDI dialog is open, outlines appear around all learnable Logic Pro controls to indicate their state. Unassigned controls have a dotted outline, and assigned controls have a solid outline with an arrow. The outline’s color indicates the control’s current state:
Dark blue: The control is not selected.
Bright blue: The control is selected.
Red: Learning is active and the control or parameter is selected for assignment.
Open the Learn MIDI dialog
In Logic Pro, do one of the following:
Tap the More button
in the control bar, then tap Learn MIDI.If you don’t see this option, you already have the Learn MIDI button in the control bar.
Tap the Learn MIDI button
in the control bar.Note: If the Learn MIDI button is not visible in the control bar, you can customize the control bar to add it. See Change the controls in the control bar.
The Learn MIDI dialog opens and learning is active.
