Intro to tracking in Motion

Motion tracking is a method of recording the movement of an element in a source video clip, then applying that recorded movement data to a target object, such as an image, a particle emitter, a filter, a mask, or text. For example, you can use motion tracking techniques to:

  • Track a name to a footballer as she zooms across the pitch

  • Stabilize an overly shaky camera to improve a “found-footage” thriller

  • Track a mask to a moving car to separate the vehicle from the background

  • Pin a post-production graphic to the side of a moving bus

  • Track a blurry circle to a person’s face to preserve an innocent bystander’s anonymity

There are six tracking behaviors in Motion. You apply a tracking behavior to a video clip in your project; analyze the clip to record movement, rotation, or changes in scale; then apply that movement data to any other object in the project, transferring the motion of the tracked element to the destination object. You can also use a tracking behavior to apply the movement of an animated object to another object, or to track the position parameter of a filter or object.
