Use input monitoring on tracks in Logic Pro for iPad

You can turn on input monitoring to hear the output of audio and software instrument tracks that are not ready for recording. This is useful when you want to set levels or practice a part before you commit to recording it. You can leave input monitoring turned on before, after, and during recording.

On software instrument tracks, you can simply select (focus) the track to hear yourself play. Input monitoring is useful when you want to play multiple tracks simultaneously, or when used in conjunction with MIDI Input and MIDI In Channel settings to play a software instrument with an external MIDI keyboard, sequencer, or other external source independent of which track is focused.

On audio tracks, the Input Monitoring button is hidden when both the iPad microphone and the iPad speakers are selected in General Audio settings.

When the track input is set to No Input, the Input Monitoring button is dimmed and inactive.

Note: Input monitoring is available only when Software Monitoring is turned on in App Settings > Audio > General. Software monitoring is typically turned on when either the audio input or the audio output is set to an external rather than an internal source, and it is inactive when both audio input and audio output are set to the internal iPad microphone and speakers. See General Audio settings.

Turn on input monitoring for a track

  1. In Logic Pro, show the track controls.

  2. Tap the Input Monitoring button  in the track header.

To turn off input monitoring on the track, tap the Input Monitoring button again.

If the Input Monitoring button does not appear in the track headers, customize the track headers so that it is visible.

Input monitoring always involves latency. The amount of latency depends on the hardware you are using to record. In certain cases, input monitoring might make it difficult to obtain the best possible timing. Route the signal you want to record directly to headphones or a monitoring amplifier—and to the audio interface inputs, for recording. You won’t accidentally overdrive your A/D converters because the input level meters display a clipping warning if an overload occurs.
