Overview of the Logic Pro for Mac 3D Object Panner

You use the 3D Object Panner when mixing Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos to position mono and stereo output signals of object tracks in 3D space. To make the 3D Object Panner visible in the Output slot of a channel strip, you must set up your project for Spatial Audio.

Note: The audio output on an object track is routed directly to one of the 118 object inputs on the Dolby Atmos plug-in. Positioning the signal on a track with the 3D Object Panner creates pan metadata that is sent to the same corresponding object input on the Dolby Atmos plug-in and kept separate from the audio signal.

3D Object Panner control

The pan control of the 3D Object Panner on the channel strip and in the track header has a square shape instead of a circular shape like the Surround Panner. This is the only visual indication that a track is an object track. The green pan puck, similar to the Surround Panner, shows the planar position, and you can adjust it by dragging the puck inside the control. A channel strip shows an additional Elevation slider for adjusting the signal’s vertical position in the three-dimensional space.

Switch to the 3D Object Panner on a channel strip

Changing the Surround Panner on a channel strip to a 3D Object Panner changes that track from a bed track to an object track.

Note: Only mono and stereo tracks (not surround tracks) can be object tracks.

  • In Logic Pro, in a Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos project, do one of the following:

    • Click the Output slot of the channel strip, then choose 3D Object Panner from the shortcut menu.

    • Control-click the Surround Panner control, then choose 3D Object Panner from the shortcut menu.

The Output slot changes from Surround to Object.

Adjust the 3D Object Panner control

You can make basic adjustments to the pan position of an object track using the 3D Object Panner control on the channel strip or track header.

In Logic Pro, do any of the following:

  • Drag the pan puck in the panning plane to adjust the position of the signal.

  • Option-click in the panning plane to reset the pan puck to the center front position.

Change the 3D Object Panner to a Surround Panner

Changing the pan control from the 3D Object Panner to a Surround Panner means that you change the track from an object track to a bed track.

  • On the channel strip in Logic Pro, do one of the following:

    • Control-click the 3D Object Panner control and choose Pan.

    • Click the Output slot and choose Pan or Output > Surround.

Note: Once the Output slot shows Surround, the signal on that track is routed to the surround bed of the Dolby Atmos plug-in, therefore making it a bed track.
