Farmer
A farmer is a person who grows crops and raises animals to be used as food. This has been a common job for people since the beginning of civilization.
What farmers do
[change | change source]The word farmer usually refers to a person who has a field, orchard, vineyard, or garden where food is grown. This agricultural land is called a farm. Food grown on the farm is eaten or sold after it is harvested. Farmers may also grow raw materials for industrial purposes. Some examples of raw materials that are used in this way are:
- cereals for alcoholic beverages
- maize/corn for plastics or fuel
- plant fibers such as cotton and flax for yarns and making cloth
Some farmers also raise animals to be used for items such as meat, leather, milk, eggs, and wool. Animals raised on a farm are called livestock.
