Biology[]

Physiology[]

Jolteon is a quadrupedal, mammalian, feliform Pokémon, covered in spiny bright yellow fur. It has long ears resembling a hare or jackrabbit, deep purple (or black) almond-shaped eyes, and a blunt catlike muzzle, with a small, black triangular nose. It has a spiky white mane encircling its neck. Its legs and paws are slender, with three toes on each and no visible claws. Jolteon has a spiny fringe of fur covering its backside, and a small short spike-like tail that is not often visible (but seen in games such as Pokémon Stadium). Its back legs seem to be powerfully-built, allowing it to run at high speeds, like a cheetah and a hare, as it resembles both fast animals. In Pokémon card art, it is shown to be leaping upward like a hare, with its long feet extended.

A Shiny Jolteon's fur is a bright, neon-shade of chartreuse. The rest of its body is the same colour as its non-shiny form.

Behavior[]

Jolteon are very sensitive and temperamental, which causes them to constantly charge as they quickly change moods. This means novice Pokémon Trainers will find it difficult to tame them, until said Trainers have earned their trust. However, this is not always the case, as seen in the anime, specifically "Eevee & Friends" and Bernice, some Jolteon can be quite friendly or even affectionate.

Natural abilities[]

Jolteon are able to gather negative ions from the atmosphere, using the resulting electricity to create lightning bolts of up to 10,000 volts. Their individual cells also create small electrical charges on their own, which combine with the static electricity caused by their bodies can result in powerful electric-type attacks. They can also make lightning and cause small thunderstorms.

When threatened or angered, their fur stands on their ends and becomes sharp bristles, and they will fire these electrified needles from their bodies. When they exhale, little sparks form in their mouths due to their internal electricity.

Evolution[]

Jolteon evolves from Eevee if it touches a Thunder Stone and is one of its eight possible evolutions.

Trivia[]

  • Jolteon, alongside Flareon and Vaporeon, are among Eevee's initial evolutions.
  • Jolteon is the only one of Eevee's evolved forms that doesn't appear to have a visible tail (though it does have a small hare-like spike similar to a hare's tail, beneath the fringe of spiky fur on its backside).
  • Jolteon has the highest speed stat out of all the Eeveelutions.
  • The Japanese name of Jolteon is similar to that of Zapdos.
  • Jolteon has the longest muzzle among all the Eeveelutions. In some cases, however, specifically official artwork and Pokémon the Series, when viewed from the front, it appears identical to all other Eeveelutions.
  • In Pokémon Yellow Special Pikachu Edition, as Blue, the player's rival, uses Eevee as his first partner Pokémon, it is possible for him to evolve it into any of the three available evolutions at the time. In the case of Jolteon, if the player wins both the Prof. Oak's laboratory and optional Route 22 battles, Eevee will become this Eeveelution.
    • In , however, Trace always evolves his Eevee into Jolteon.

Origin[]

According to Motofumi Fujiwara, a key person at Game Freak, Eevee was based on a vague childhood experience he had. He described seeing an "indefinable creature" and that Eevee was based on a drawing of all that he could remember of it. Though it wasn't based on any distinct animal, Fujiwara mentioned that Eevee reminded him of a fluffy cat or dog-like creature. Each one of Eevee's evolutions are based on the same design but are made to resemble their type.[2]

Jolteon shares many traits with hares such as jackrabbits, as well as cats, bearing a feliform body-shape all around. Its feline/feliform features and yellow coloration draw inspiration from cheetahs, while displaying distinct hare-like features as well. It also bears a close resemblance to medium-sized wildcats, namely thr serval, which possess the same general shape, yellow color, and long ears. Its short, spike-like tail references its hare traits. The cheetah and hare traits conform to its ability to run at lightning speed, as it displays traits of fast animals. Jolteon may also be loosely based on the Raijū, a legendary creature from Japanese mythology composed of lightning, that is said to take in the form of various animals such as cats and dogs (with the cat-like features of it being relevant to this).

Etymology[]

Jolteon's English name comes from "jolt" and "eon", much like Flareon and Vaporeon. Its Japanese name, "Saandazu", literally means "thunder".

Names in other languages[]

  • English, Italian and Spanish: Jolteon
  • French: Voltali
  • German: Blitza
  • Chinese: 雷伊布 / 雷伊貝 (HK) / 雷精靈 (Taiwan)
  • Korean: 쥬피썬더
