Wicked, the musical is based on Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, which is based on Frank L. Baum’s 1900 novel The Wizard of Oz and the 1939 film adaptation of the same name.

There are musical theatre fans who are eagerly awaiting the upcoming Wicked movie — I’m not that girl.

I’m a deep musical theatre nerd and have seen Wicked over 30 times. On the one hand, I’m happy it’s getting attention and will be more accessible for viewers beyond stage productions. On the other hand, I don’t generally like musical movies, because singing on screen seems forced — especially when CGI takes centre stage.

Article content

Wicked the movie has been a work in progress for at least eight years, as there were talks about it in 2016. Since then, the stage musical celebrated its 20th anniversary, debuting on Broadway in 2003. Over the years the movie has garnered a lot of buzz. All the excitement is leading to a of merch and exciting brand collaborations.

I love seeing the creativity of these partnerships and the opportunity to sport more theatre merchandise. Here are some of the Wicked collaborations that I’m more excited about than the movie itself.

Update: I have now seen the movie twice and appreciate it. A lot of the (stunning) sets were actually built, versus CGI — and Ariana Grande (who plays Glinda) and Cynthia Erivo (who plays Elphaba) sang live. Their voices are incredible and perfect for their respective roles. The movie is long and a two-parter, the next one is set to be released in November 2025. I’d recommend seeing the movie, with a snack in hand. The movie soundtrack is now available and I’m excited to have another rendition of the musical to listen over and over again.

Favourite piece: I have the Defygravity heels and like how the Wicked theme is subtle but present. They’re also pretty comfortable, considering they’re heels. They have Aldo’s signature “Pillow Walk” which is a much-appreciated padded sole.

Favourite set: I like the Elphaba & Glinda Figures, pictured above because the two witches are most visible. It’s also 558 pieces, versus the Welcome to Emerald City set which has 945.

Favourite property: Ozdust Ballroom. Overall, I love the attention to detail in this set — so many references. However, I can see myself singing “Let’s go down to the Ozdust Ballroom” throughout the game which would be entertaining for me.
