2025 Article processing charges (APC)

Authors who publish open access in Earth, Planets and Space are required to pay an article processing charge (APC).
The APC price will be determined from the date on which the article is accepted for publication, i.e. the 2025 APC will be in effect for all articles accepted in 2025.

The 2025 APC, subject to VAT or local taxes where applicable, is: £1020.00/$1640.00/€1330.00

The 2025 APC for Express Letters, which are submitted after 1 March 2025 and accepted before 31 July 2028, is discounted to £736,95/$1184.90/€960.93

Featured Article: The theoretical basis for textural indices of eruption dynamics: review and new conceptual models

The crystal and vesicle textures of eruption products record their histories of change of physical state from the formation at depth to the quench near the surface. Development of suitable textural indices to decipher the histories and the applications to real products can expand our knowledge on the migration of the magma to the surface. As eruption products inevitably experience the nucleation of crystal and bubble, I illustrate the basic understanding of nucleation processes of crystal and bubble in terms of classical nucleation theory. The topics cover homogeneous nucleation, heterogeneous nucleation, nucleation limits and second nucleation under cooling or/and decompression of magmas. I discuss their roles in interpreting matrix-crystal and -bubble number densities as indices for changing rates temperature or pressure in conduits. Using the conceptual models for pheno-textures, I propose CSD slope of phenocryst and volume of pheno-bubble as indices to estimate magma supply rate from depth and eruption volumes in Sakurajima historical eruptions, respectively.

Featured Article: Forecasting the fate of vertically propagating dikes from geodetic data

This study investigates the cause of dike arrests beneath active volcanoes by reconciling geodetic measurements with theoretical and experimental insights. Four causes of dike arrests are considered: (1) solidification, (2) insufficient volume, (3) negative buoyancy, and (4) stress perturbation near the dike tip. Then, this study discusses the cause of dike arrests associated with the 1997 and 1998 seismic swarm off the Izu Peninsula, Japan, and the 2015 failed eruption of Sakurajima volcano, Japan, as an example. This study suggests that the Izu Peninsula cases are caused by insufficient volume of the dike, the loss of buoyancy, or both. The Sakurajima case is most likely due to insufficient volume.

Aims and scope

Earth, Planets and Space (EPS) is an international, peer-reviewed and open access e-journal publishing high-quality scientific articles in the Earth and Planetary Sciences, particularly geomagnetism, aeronomy, space science, seismology, volcanology, geodesy, and planetary science. EPS also welcomes articles in new and interdisciplinary subjects, including those on new instrumentation. 

EPS publishes in a variety of formats: Full Papers, Express Letters, Frontier Letters, Technical Reports and Comments. In all of these categories, only new and original contents will be considered for publication. Express Letters provide authors with a way to rapidly publish brief reports of high-impact results. Frontier Letters cover frontier research in various fields in Earth and Planetary Sciences, and can be contributed only through an invitation by the Editor-in-Chief. Technical Reports present technical aspects of research in related fields. EPS also provides a venue for topical special issues based on conferences, research projects, and other research initiatives.
