Letter from Rob Sarkies, Director of Pike River

Like many New Zealanders, I followed the Pike story via the media from the day the mine blew in November 2010. I was drawn to the humanity of it, but for a long time could not see a film in it – it was a story of corporate mal-practice that resulted in deaths of 29 workers with no justice or accountability. It was a devastating story seemingly without hope or resolution.

Letter from the creators of Workmates

Workmates is a scrappy love story about how hard - and how fun - it is to make art at the bottom of the world for no money. It’s about being in love with someone at work you shouldn’t be in love with, and it’s about being way too devoted to your job.

Recent reviews

“Having people come up to us and talk about their experiences, transformational experiences with family members and themselves, having gone through watching the film, is just way beyond what we ever expected. And so it’s just been this really massive surprise for us that we’re just so overwhelmed by and thankful for.” Writer/Director Miki Magasiva and Anapela Polataivao on their film Tinā. Now showing in Australian & New Zealand cinemas.

"There comes this moment in adulthood where you feel you're supposed to have it figured out by now—good job, big house, pair of kids—but find it’s not certain, and everyone is annoyed at you for fitting in badly at the grown ups table. Zoe Pepper’s Birthright takes that feeling, that kind of gangly mid-adulthood puberty, and magnifies it to feature length, every bit as compelling and queasily funny as it sounds."
