It was found that, on 7 th day 20% germination was achieved in the case of seeds kept as control, whereas it was 60%, 60%, 90%, 50%, 50% and 30% respectively in the seeds soaked in water for 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 hours. Thus the best exposure time for seeds to be soaked in water was 6 hours. However at extended soaking periods the germination percentage was poor.

It was found that, on 17 th day of sowing, scarification with sand resulted in 80% germination followed by the seeds, pre-treated with IAA giving 74% germination. Pre-soaking the seeds overnight, the germination percentage was 68. The germination percentage was 7, 53, 38, 49, 53, 27, 36, 48, 41, 57, 40 and 65 respectively in the seeds kept as control, stratified seeds, the seeds that received alternate high and low temperature, KNO 3 , thiourea, kinetin, GA 3 , H 2 SO 4 , electric current, mechanical injury, coumarin and brassinolide. Thus, scarification with sand for maximising germination in A. racemosus is the best option, otherwise pre-treatment with IAA also results in higher germination compared to control.

In the present investigation, seeds of Baliospermum montanum were subjected to various treatments... more In the present investigation, seeds of Baliospermum montanum were subjected to various treatments to achieve early germination by breaking dormancy. It was found that, On 17 th day, 88% germination was recorded in the seeds which were mechanically injured followed by 86% in the IAA treated seeds. It was 11%, 32%, 64%, 31%, 29%, 28%, 27%, 31%, 28%, 41%, 52%, 31%, 36% and 72% germination respectively in the seeds kept as control, those treated with hot water, scarification, stratification, alternating high and low temperature, KNO 3 , thiourea, kinetin, GA 3 , H 2 SO 4 , presoaking, electric current, coumarin and brassinolide. Thus, for B. montanum seeds, mechanical injury is the best option for achieving higher germination percentage, the other option being IAA (table-1).

In the present investigation, seeds of Nigella sativa were subjected to various treatments to ach... more In the present investigation, seeds of Nigella sativa were subjected to various treatments to achieve early germination by breaking dormancy. The highest germination percentage for N. sativa seeds (93%) was achieved with pre-soaking treatment for 6 hours. It was followed by 84% with IAA. The seeds kept as control germinated to the tune of 59%. The scarified and GA 3 treated seeds exhibited 55% germination each, whereas thiourea, H 2 SO 4 and hot water treated seeds showed 45% germination each. The stratified seeds, those subjected to alternate high and low temperature, KNO 3 , mechanically injured and those subjected to electric current, coumarin and brassinolide showed 46%, 42%, 33%, 51% , 31%, 31% and 75% germination respectively. Thus, for achieving higher germination percentage of N. sativa, pre-soaking of the seeds for 6 hours is the best option.

The seeds of this plant species were subjected to various physical and chemical treatments but the highest germination percentage (77%) was achieved for the seeds exposed to alternating high and low temperature. Whereas, the germination percentage was 71 and 65 under the influence of IAA and brassinolide respectively till 17 th day of sowing. So, the best method for breaking its dormancy was found to be treatment with alternating high and low temperature.

In the present investigation, seeds of Desmodium gangeticum were subjected to various treatments ... more In the present investigation, seeds of Desmodium gangeticum were subjected to various treatments to achieve early germination by breaking dormancy. A cursory look at the table 1 indicates that only 19% of D. gangeticum seeds could germinate under controlled conditions. Whereas, a germination percentage of 91 was achieved in the stratified seeds followed by 71% under the influence of IAA and 57% under brassinolide treatment. In this way, stratification is the best method for breaking the seed dormancy of D. gangeticum.

It was found that, on 7th day of sowing, 12% germination was achieved in case of seeds kept as control, 32% germination in case of seeds which were presoaked for 48 hours and 28% germination was found in case of seeds presoaked for 72 hours respectively whereas, 82% germination was recorded in case of seeds which were presoaked for 24 hours and prewashed with hot water (34 o C).

It was found that, on 7th day of sowing, 0% germination was achieved in case of seeds kept as control and H 2 SO 4 treated seeds, whereas it was 90% in the seeds treated with mechanical scarification. Hence, it is inferred that Malus domestica seeds, before sowing should be treated with mechanical scarification (making cuts on the seed coats by knives or scissors) so as to achieve the early germination but it is important that the cut should be made carefully in the seeds so that may not damage the delicate embryonic tissues.

The highest chlorophyll contents were found to be in brassinolide treated seeds followed by those treated with IAA, thiourea and potassium nitrate. The respective amount of chlorophyll under these treatments was found to be 5.80 mg-g FW ¹ under 10 ppm concentration of brassinolide, it was followed by 5.58 mg-g FW ¹ under 100 ppm IAA, 5.47 mg-g FW ¹ under 10 ppm thiourea, 5.28 mg-g FW ¹ under potassium nitrate and 4.99 mg-g FW ¹ in the seedlings raised from untreated seeds. The mentioned results concluded that the primary productivity of this chosen plant increases with lower dozes of brassinolide as compared to controlled seedlings as well as other used factors.

In the present investigation, seeds of Jatropha gossypifolia were subjected to various treatments... more In the present investigation, seeds of Jatropha gossypifolia were subjected to various treatments to achieve early germination by breaking dormancy. The highest germination percentage was recorded for the seeds subjected to hot water pretreatment followed by IAA treatment which respectively induced 84 and 78 percent germination on 17 th day after sowing. For the same time period, the germination percentage was 21, 38, 20, 58, 33, 32, 30, 24, 32, 60, 27, 49, 30 and 69 respectively in the seeds kept as control, those treated with scarification, stratification, alternating high and low temperature, KNO 3 , thiourea, kinetin, GA 3 , H 2 SO 4 , presoaking, electric current, mechanical injury, coumarin and brassinolide. Incidently, there was no improvement of germination percentage after 17 th day of sowing. Thus, the best option for the germination of J. gossypifolia seeds is pre-treatment with hot water.

The mentioned results concluded that the primary productivity of this chosen plant increases with higher dozes of IAA as compared to controlled seedlings as well as other used factors.

The highest chlorophyll contents were found to be in IAA treated seeds followed by those treated with brassinolide, thiourea and potassium nitrate. The respective amount of chlorophyll under these treatments was found to be 4.91, 4.79, 4.66 and 4.33 mg-g FW ¿¹ under IAA (100 ppm), brassinolide (50 ppm), thiourea (50 ppm) and potassium nitrate (50 ppm) compared to the control seedlings which were estimated to have 4.26 mg-g FW ¿¹ of chlorophyll. The mentioned results concluded that the primary productivity of this chosen plant increases with higher dozes of IAA as compared to controlled seedlings as well as other used factors.

So, the highest germination percentage (87%) was recorded for the seeds treated with IAA followed by 76% which was achieved in the seeds subjected to hot water pretreatment on the 17 th day after sowing. The germination percentage was 17, 23, 20, 47, 27, 21, 27, 18, 35, 40, 22, 44, 21 and 64 in the seeds respectively kept as control, subjected to scarification, stratification, alternating high and low temperature, KNO 3 , thiourea, kinetin, GA 3 , H 2 SO 4 , pre-soaking, electric current, mechanical injury, coumarin and brassinolide treatments for the same time period. Thus, for achieving higher germination percentage for the seeds of B. orellana, treatment with IAA is the best option.
