Hi everyone,
I am new to GitHub Discussions and wanted to understand how the "mark as answer" feature works.
Who can mark an answer?
Can multiple answers be marked?
Does it affect contributor visibility or badges?
Would appreciate a clear explanation.
Thanks!

Only the discussion author or repository maintainers can mark a reply as the accepted answer on GitHub, only one answer can be marked, and while it doesn’t give official badges, it highlights the contributor and improves their visibility in the community.

Hi @Harshbh7! Welcome to GitHub Discussions. Here is a breakdown of how the "Mark as answer" feature works:

1. Who can mark an answer?

Only the author of the discussion (the person who asked) and users with maintainer or admin permissions in the repository can mark a comment as the official answer.

2. Can multiple answers be marked?

No, only one comment can be marked as the accepted answer at a time. If you mark a new one, the previous one will be replaced.

3. Does it affect visibility or badges?

Yes, in several ways:

  • Visibility: The marked answer is pinned right below the original post, making it easy for others to find the solution quickly.
  • Badges: Providing accepted answers helps you earn the "Galaxy Brain" achievement on your profile.
  • Reputation: It highlights you as a helpful contributor within that specific community.

Note

Note: If this explanation helped you, please consider marking it as the answer to help other community members find this solution faster and to close the discussion. 🚀

hi @Harshbh7

The discussion author or repository maintainers with moderation/triage permissions can mark a reply as the answer; only one reply is shown as “marked as answer” per discussion, and repository admins can additionally apply a higher‑level “verified” badge.

So, to break it down, only one reply is shown as the official “marked as answer” per discussion (the accepted answer). A distinct verified state can be applied on top of that by admins to highlight authority.
Marking an answer highlights that reply in the thread and helps others find the solution quickly; verified answers add an extra trust badge and are applied by repository admins to signal reviewed, authoritative content. Marking/verification can affect how solutions surface in search and how readers judge reliability.

What does “Mark as answer” do?

It lets you pick the reply that actually solved the problem, so future readers can jump straight to it.

Who can use it?

The person who opened the discussion, or someone maintaining the repo.

Can you pick more than one?

Nope—just one at a time. You can switch it if needed.

What changes after marking?

That reply gets highlighted and the discussion is treated as resolved.

Why bother?

It saves others time and makes the thread more useful. Any “recognition” is just visibility, nothing formal.

  1. only owner can.
  2. Nope, one at a time.
  3. A lil. The marked answer gets highlighted at the top , means easier for others to find.
It can help contributors get recognition . In some repos/orgs, it may contribute to badges or reputation systems (if enabled).

It’s a common misconception that anyone participating in a thread can close it out, but the 'Mark as answer' feature is actually restricted to the original poster (OP) and users with maintainer permissions (Triage or higher) for that repository. The system is designed to highlight a single definitive solution, so while you can switch which comment is selected, only one answer can be marked at a time.

Beyond just organizing the thread, marking an answer has a direct impact on the community: it grants the Galaxy Brain achievement badge to the helpful contributor once they reach specific milestones (starting at 2 accepted answers). As a pro-tip for maintainers, if you find yourself answering the same marked questions repeatedly, you can use the 'Create discussion category' settings to funnel those Q&As into a dedicated 'Knowledge Base' category, which GitHub's UI prioritizes in search results to reduce duplicate queries.
